2021-2022 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for this information. Can you share any recommendations on places to live like yours that are convenient to the med school?
I've heard good things about the Scott at Brush Park and Studio One.
CCA Lafayette Park is a 10 minute drive from the main campus, and is reasonably good.
I do not recommend Sheridan Courts or any of the other Midtown apartments (besides Studio One) that are managed by Essential.
I cannot recommend Lafayette Towers-- a lot of medical students currently live there but there was a fire recently and the fire alarms failed to go off. I also cannot recommend the Pavilion-- they've had a lot of turn over in their management office and when I applied there they engaged in some shady practices.
What about transportation?
You really need to have a car. The bus network in Detroit is not that great, and there is minimal light rail.

Is it possible to walk from housing to campus? Or is there nothing close enough?

Fellow OOSer

Pros
  • Lots of really good/interesting restaurants (especially ethnic restaurants)
  • Several nice park areas (such as the River Walk)
  • Very affordable (I pay $1250/month+ utilities for a nice 1 bdrm in a building with lots of amenities).
  • There's a vibrant nightlife, although I don't participate in it so someone else will need to chime in.
Cons
  • City has a lot of unsafe areas (that are very close to the safe ones), and if you get in trouble the city police can take a very long time to respond
  • I have a mild gait instability (due to pez planus) and have been mocked when I'm out powerwalking (I travel quite a bit and this has been the only city where this has ever occurred)
  • Auto insurance is very expensive (although I have enough ties to home that I can keep my car registered there and avoid this)
  • While this is getting better, some neighborhoods don't have nearby grocery stores (and many of the ones that do just have an overpriced grocery store with low quality goods)
I'm single/don't have kids so I can't speak much to the quality of the local schools.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions
What are some of the unsafe areas to avoid? Or is that something we’d eventually learn by experience living in Detroit? Thanks for all the useful info. 🙂

what about 8 mile???

I’ve had some issues near the Marathon gas station at Warren and Chrysler. I’ve also heard that Highland Park is unsafe.
generally you’ll learn to judge the neighborhoods based on your own criteria and comfort level (ie as a single guy it’s safe to walk around my neighborhood during the day, however a lot of the girls in my building don’t like walking to the nearby grocery store alone).
There’s also a Facebook page called the Detroit scanner run by a retired cop who monitors and reports on police/fire calls in Detroit. Be warned it’s not very PC and is probably biased towards certain areas, but if you see a lot of random crimes being reported in an area it’s probably an unsafe area.
East of Gratiot Avenue essentially. 7 Mile has a bad rap too.
Lafayette park is east of Gratiot but is pretty safe.

Depends on where you are 😉😅

Is WL movement expected in begining/end of April? Or is May the month of action? Since Wayne starts their curriculum in July I figure they'd want to begin WL movement early as well.

According to my late-night, neurotic read-through of the Wayne thread last year, it was Thursday, April 1, 2021 in the morning. Thereafter, just a few A’s trickled down. On July 2, 2021, they rejected the majority of those remaining on the waitlist.

At least im not the only one that thoroughly does research via last years thread

That wasn’t the only day right
I believe that there were other days after April 1 where few people got off the waitlist, and similarly, there were a few days before July 2nd when waitlisted people got rejected, but the majority of the movement and rejection occurred on April 1 and July 2, respectively

Edit: April 1 this year is a Friday, so not sure if they will do it Thursday March 31, Friday, April 1, or even Thursday April 7. This is all very speculative…

Make sure you guys look athe financial aid portal for wayne. I realized I had many unsatisfied documents I needed to fill out.
All my documents have been completed on the aid portal for months. I guess it’s still just a waiting game

WL person here: For all of you in the accepted students Facebook group, do you get the sense that most people in it are committed to Wayne? Or that a lot of people are still weighing their options? Bc there’s already almost 300 people in it which is the average class size…

To be completely honest with you, it feels ambiguous. There hasn't been that many posts in the group other than the occasional questions about matriculation requirements/housing, so I haven't seen anything confirming that sense.

For the people who have decided that they are going elsewhere why not take a few seconds to withdraw your acceptance so it gives others an opportunity to get off the waitlist/get accepted?

I know of people who decided they're attending another school but are still holding on to their acceptance for no reason it seems, which is kinda frustrating.
This is not unique to Wayne State
Why don't you reach out to people in the Facebook group and ask them to withdraw their acceptance? That's social media in a similar vein to this thread 🤔

I’m also on the alternate list, so I can empathize with your anxiety.

That being said, this is not appropriate. As some have mentioned, acceptances can be leveraged for financial aid and some people may truly not know whether they are going to attend!

Above all it’s a distasteful plea that, odds are, will not get you off the alternate list.

I figured it’s because people are still waiting for financial aid packages, which is understandable

This 100%. I know that there is a lack of transparency in this process and that’s enough to make many spiral into anxiety and depression but begging people to give up their acceptances when they’re a.) trying to find the best financial/fit/life school choice for them and b.) likely trying to leverage aid is not the way. Also it’s not 1:1. You can convince 30 people to give up their As but you don’t know if they will go to you.

You can always summons the Corleone within you and make them an offer they can’t refuse!

I got waitlisted a week ago, do you all think sending a letter of intent might be worth it? And if so, what should I write, I don't have any meaningful updates since I interviewed at the end of February since Im currently on a medical leave of absence from my masters program for the semester (made them aware of this at the interview).

From what I read in this thread and last years thread, letters are not read by adcoms here... though I'd love for someone to prove me wrong

thanks for letting me know, i just thought i should ask just in case. WSU was my only II so im desperate lol
I totally get that as this is my top choice lol. But I don't think there's anything to lose by sending an update. Worst case: they won't look at it. So if you're unsure, just send an update. Better to not have any regrets in the end if this is a cruel cycle :/

Did anyone who got rejected MD/PhD and had their application placed into the MD-only pool hear back yet?

You waited for almost 6 months without going insane ... im impressed ngl
I applied MD/PhD initially so I needed to wait on the decision for that program before I could get an MD-only decision. Trust me, I had my insanity moments here and there wondering why I wasn’t hearing back at all from the MD committee when I interviewed so early 😂

Also, I saw mentions of sushi earlier in this thread and like, yes, I am down for sushi in July if I get accepted cause there’s nothing this girl loves better 😍😍😍
