So it seems like we still have to have transcripts sent and get a physical done even if we're just on the waitlist? Everything else seems to be for MPH/accepted medicine

Alternate list today; withdrew. Best of luck to those future doctors waiting to come off! FWIW, I work with a doc who came off of the Downstate waitlist about 2 weeks before orientation. Granted, that was in like 1980, but it has been something I've considered since sending my app. Cheers!

I accepted to be on the waitlist but it says if we are holding another acceptance and select commit to enroll at another school we’ll be automatically withdrawn from DS. Am I understanding that correctly? So there’s no point in me accepting the waitlist?

I would bet big money what they decided to do was place EVERYONE still waiting for a decision on the AL (because no rejections or acceptances went out as far as I saw), hoping that a bunch of people opt out of being on the AL. This would give them fewer things to do/people to consider, which is what they really need right now. What a **** show of an admissions department tbh!

Also added to the AL today. IS, interviewed in September.

I hope everyone in the same boat treats themselves to something nice today 🙂.

My theory: Downstate does this because so many students who eventually matriculate here are holding out for acceptances at the other (more prestigious) NYC schools. So Downstate's game is to wait as long as they possibly can to offer most of their acceptances so they fill the right number of seats. Kind of like how DO schools have a later cycle than MDs. I hate it, but not much I can do about it.

I think if you choose plan to enroll rather commit to enroll to the other school then you can remain on the waitlist at downstate. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Does everyone's alternate list form say 2022 entering class on the offer response page? Are we not considered 2023 entering class? For context, this is the text on mine:
"YES, I would like to have my name placed on SUNY Downstate College of Medicine’s Alternate List, for the 2022 entering class. I have read the school specific policies pertaining to the SUNY Downstate alternate list which were listed in my alternate offer email.
NO, I would not like to have my name placed on the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine’s Alternate List. Please withdraw my name from consideration for the 2022 entering class."

yeah I noticed that too. Probably a typo right?

I too have been wondering if some of these issues people have been bringing up are by design, because as you said they do actually accomplish something.

They have enough qualified applicant to fill their class several times over. If some people fall by the wayside during the application process due to the (entirely preventable) issues that have been documented on this thread than so be it. If anything, it makes their lives easier – the admissions team have less applications to sift through due to people's applications getting handicapped by various issues, people dropping out due to the incredibly drawn-out process and little-to-no communication or accurate information, etc.

When I say "by design" I don't mean they're sitting around like "MUAHAHA, how do we make this process arbitrarily difficult?" but more that they recognize all of these issues and have the resources to solve them, but also see that the issues help them in an indirect way by cutting down somewhat on a vast application pile, so see no need to fix it.

I don’t think many will choose to get off the WL. I think maybe those with A do not know of sdn and did not post.

Anyone know when’s the earliest u might get off the waitlist and be notified of acceptance? Like could it potentially happen as early as April if current accepted applicants withdraw early or do they not start sorting it out until May

+1millionth AL interviewed early Dec

You are understanding it correctly, but "Commit to Enroll" is not even an option to accepted students until April 30. Currently, only "Plan to Enroll" is open, which allows you to hold onto waitlist positions at other schools. The policy varies I believe per school on Commit to Enroll. For MUSC, where I was accepted, you have to select "Plan to Enroll" by April 15, but do not have to select "Commit to Enroll" until June 24. Prior to the "Commit" deadline, the only limitation on what positions I can hold relates to acceptances, not waitlists. I.e. you can hold onto waitlist positions but not multiple acceptances until June 24 in the case of MUSC. If you have other acceptances, be sure to read their specific policies carefully. If all you hold right now are waitlists, then you don't need to worry about that language. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of this, but this is what I believe is the case.

So, in other words, for those of us without any acceptances, we could realistically be waiting until June 24th and thereafter if that’s when the commit to enroll deadline is for other schools as well, or am I understanding this wrong

You could be waiting from now (realistically May 1) until the first day of orientation. That's the range. That's it.

Yeah I’m looking into the plan to enroll vs commit to enroll deadlines right now and it’s really not making me feel good lol
