Hi All!

I received an interview invite this week! My app has been complete since middle October, so I was getting a little worried. Don't give up hope!! I just wanted to see if anyone had advice for how to prepare? My interview will be virtual. Thanks so much!! 🙂

Hey, first off, congratulations! I was in the same boat.

Go through the SDN interview feedback questions page for WCUCOM, that honestly helped me the most. Definitely have good answers to why physician, why DO, and why WCUCOM. Have at least 2-3 greatest strengths/weaknesses and go over the tenets of osteopathy. Practice with people as this will help you learn how to formulate sentences in real-time while getting feedback from your practice interviewer. I used my pre-med friends and also did a mock interview with career services from school. Those are what I did to prep and I felt like I was pretty prepared on interview day. They're super relaxed and nice!

Good luck to you and hope to see you on the other side!

Edit: Forgot to mention I did virtual also. Make sure to look at your camera on your laptop so it looks like you're looking at them (hopefully that makes sense when I say that)

I just did my interview and I am making sure that there are no informational sessions right? Just the 30 minute interview?

Yeah, as far as I know, there is no post informational sessions for interviewees and I haven't received anything else post-interview.

there are no information sessions! if you're accepted, the student admissions committee will host several virtual meetings where you can ask all the nitty gritty questions!

as a reminder, faculty/staff emails are on the website and it never hurts to send a thoughtful thank you! also, definitely jot down who interviewed you somewhere so you remember! its super fun to be able to meet the faculty that interviewed with you in person once classes start! !

This year, there were 7 lottery sites, and 7 application sites. If you don't get into the sites you applied to, then you participate in the lottery. Only a couple people this year that applied to application sites didn't get one. Most just opt straight for the lottery. The class was sent the lottery order a day ahead, and then the day of everyone made their choice. In the lottery, the majority of people (>75%) got one of their top two choices. The largest sites with the most students are Pinebelt (hattiesburg and surrounding areas) and Gulf Coast and both are lottery. The sites that were more impacted initially (more people ranked first than seats available), ended up being less so the day of the lottery, because people wanted to go where their friends were going.

Thank you so much for sharing this!!!!

This applies to both 3rd and 4th year? Sorry if this has been asked a lot😅

4th year makes their own schedule with exactly zero help from the school. My one gripe about an osteopathic education is definitely the clinical exposure, all whilst paying the same ridiculous tuition.

Can you explain more what you mean about the clinical exposure? Like are you saying you don’t get enough clinical skills practice during your time there?

What exactly does this mean? Is this different than other schools?
Outpatient: Not in a hospital. It usually refers to a clinic or rehab setting.

Ideal rotations are in acute hospitals, preferably Trauma 1 or 2.

I have an email into clinical rotations faculty to get an official word into this, because I'm curious too! Not at all disputing what's been said but just want to make sure we've got updated information as they've updated rotation sites a bit in the last couple years!

I can assure you the majority of rotations will be outpatient based. I’m sure it has improved as there have been several WCUCOM-associated residency programs open since I left. But the vast majority (if not all) of osteopathic schools do not have an associated academic teaching hospital, whereas MD programs do. This is not a situation that is unique to William Carey.

I am also not saying this is a deal breaker. I am completely satisfied with my education at WCOCOM and wouldn’t change anything regarding my medical education even if I could. My point was more focused on the tuition costs in fourth year, but I get it, the cost of a medical education is what it is.

that's good to know! thank you!!!

For any students here . Do you guys study for tests with PowerPoints or do u have to read books ? Are lectures mandatory?

Hub lofts is that safe area to walk around?

I read the textbook and supplemented with the power points.

Our attendance was 80/20 mandatory, except the semester during which we were studying for boards. Attendance was optional, save OPP, for that semester if your grades were adequate.

Hub Lofts are in downtown Hattiesburg, which seemed extremely safe during my time there.

current OMS1. we normally have 2-ish mandatory lectures per week. 1 is our public health class (one hour long/once a week) that has no exams, and the other is flipped session for anatomy (2 hours long/once a week) which you can technically attend virtually but because there is in class points assigned to "clicker" type questions, its beneficial to be present to collaborate with other students. everything else has live lectures you can attend if you wish, but is recorded for you to watch at your convenience. anatomy lab/CPC (doctoring skills)/OPP labs are mandatory. while this wasn't the case for @NOLADO84's class, starting with our class of 2026 (and presumably for your class though subject to change), lecture attendance is not mandatory unless the professor has explicitly stated (usually for guest lectures which happen 1-2 times a semester).

99.99999% of everything is powerpoint. you will have access to virtual textbooks, but the only time we really use them is for practice questions, which they are very useful for (gray's, BRS, etc.). for our public health class, there are assigned textbook chapters that she'll pull quiz questions from, but usually someone makes spark notes and hands them out so not everyone has to read the chapter. everyone has their own study style though. lots of people use boards and beyond/sketchy/etc. as primary resource and supplement with lectures. not how I do it but to each there own!

i would personally say the immediate 2-3 block radius around hub lofts is okay during the day time, but i personally would probably not venture out at night in that area by myself? my class has a few folks that live at hub city, but most people live in west hattiesburg (west of the highway), which is where I would personally reccomend living! but to each there own! there are some earlier posts in the thread about housing recommendations and the student admissions committee should be providing those resources if they haven't already!

Hey Guys!

I got this response from our Director of Clinical Education about third year rotations being clinic/hospital based. Hope this helps clarify!

"During your third year, you have the following rotations:

Core Rotations
Family Medicine (clinic)
Clinic Internal Medicine (clinic only or clinic and hospital)
Hospital Medicine (hospital only or hospital and clinic)
Pediatrics (clinic)
General Surgery (Hospital)
OB/GYN (clinic and Hospital)
Mental Health (Clinic, Hospital, or both depending on what is available in your hub site)

3 Elective Rotations:
Selective rotation
Primary Care Selective
Elective

Some of these rotations are always going to be a clinic, others will always be hospital-based, some can be both, and some depend on the rotation you choose. The three elective rotations depend on what you choose if they are clinic or hospital. For example, if you choose to do OBGYN for your primary care then it will be clinic and hospital, or if you choose trauma surgery for your Elective that will be hospital-based. The curriculum offers the opportunity for students to have exposure to both clinic and hospital rotations while doing their clinical rotations."

I should have included in my previous statement, the hospital rotations without residents are basically an extension of being in clinic.

Hello everyone, I have an interview coming up at William Carey, but I am taking a few prereqs curerntly through distance learning (online). Do they accept online prereqs?

i think it would depend on the class. i know for core science they want labs with those, but it is was like psych/soc/math it would probably be fine online as long as the university you're doing them through is regionally accredited? i'd probably reach out to dr. weir and ask via email.

Accepted!!! Just got the email from Dr.Weir! Interviewed 2/10! Sub 500 Mcat & 1st quarter Casper score btw so stat isn’t above everything else in your application!

Hey, guys just got the A today! Having a 3.5 GPA and a 500 MCAT, I was scared to even apply this cycle and thought I was going to be rejected easily. This should serve as a lesson to never give up and always try no matter what. Also the best tip I can give to anyone that has an interview coming up, look at the SDN interview questions and just be yourself and be confident, they wouldn't give you an interview if they didn't believe in you. PM me if you have any questions or need any help!

Same lol😭 what is the difference between deferred and waitlisted ?
alternate list is you are accepted pending someone withdraws their acceptance. deferred list means when they get through the alternate list, they will come to the deferred pool and pull people from that pool for acceptance. definitely don't give up hope yet! lots of folks make it off the deferred list every year... you might just be waiting a little bit towards May/June/July to hear! i know it's so hard but keep your head up!

There is absolutely no difference. You can call to find out what your rank is amongst those waiting for acceptance.
per Ms. Wedgeworth, there actually is a difference! something new-ish i guess they've done with my class and this incoming class!

Can anyone find a recent match list for WCUCOM ?
There is a list in the 2021-2022 thread somewhere but the video from last years match which ceremony (which has everyone's matches) is also on the schools facebook page. There will be one for this years match of course next month!

During my interview they said they were building apartments right by William Carey do any current students know if this is correct ?

that is true! haven't heard an update about it personally in a while but they definitely have new housing in the works close to campus.

I wonder if they are talking about Ivy Row. It was recommended to me by Mrs. Martha so I signed the lease already. It's under construction but it will be ready before school starts.

Do you know how close to campus Ivy row is?
