2023-2024 UT Tyler

Luckily it doesnt affect us yet!
I didn’t even catch that. So I’m guessing the first students who will do this are currently juniors in undergrad at the earliest? That is relieving to hear - competing for just 25-ish spots was kinda intimidating lol

honestly the only reason I know is cause I was freaking out so I asked the dean at the meet and greet lol

Yeah, the class is already small as-is. With 15/40 being early assurance it would only leave 25. Honestly makes sense for the school’s mission though TBH, just intimidating for those not in the program
You gotta remember too that those 15 early assurance kids have to meet minimum GPA expectations and give up a lot of free time to do the enrichment activities.
It will absolutely be a big help to them to be mentored through to apply to med school, but some won’t make it or will change their minds.

I'm a student at UT Tyler and I received an email that explicitly states, "possible guaranteed seat in the Fall 2024 entering class at UT Tyler School of Medicine". What info is available that shows this doesn't apply to this cycle?

Here's what we know, reach out! #151
Are you a senior or a junior?

I am post-bacc. I read the link posted in #151 and it doesn't say that it won't start this year. Everything I've heard and more importantly, the email I received from HP advisors states it will effect this cycle.
Hmm okay, very confused now cause I asked the dean at the meet and greet and he said no, and to "dispel that myth". This was last week but I guess if the most recent email correspondence says it does then I'll take yalls word for it.

What did you ask? If it impacted this cycle?

Definitely not trying to dispute what you heard from Dr. Willis. Could be miscommunication from SOM to HP advisors or HP advisors to us.

I guess time will tell.

They have a few info sessions at the eligible schools coming up, we will have more info soon regardless!

Y'all are lucky cranberry is around because I try not to share anything I hear. Nothing personal, it's just business. I'm tryin' to get one of them seats. 🤣
I’m a reapplicant so I’ve lost my competitive edge 😩 But I figure that there’s not much I can say on here that would give someone so much benefit that it would push me out.

we got this email again today stating

“UT Tyler School of Medicine will be here xxx to discuss the Early Admission Program with students currently in the TMDSAS medical school application cycle. If you are interested in knowing more about a possible guaranteed seat in the Fall 2024 entering class at UT Tyler School of Medicine, please join…..”

Are you still in school and are you eligible for this program?

just a forewarning to anyone else doing it, this application is literally a whole new med school app minus inputting grades and classes.

Yes- Alumni are eligible as well.
I guess I don't understand how this program works. I assumed those were for sophomores or juniors who wouldn't be applying yet. Why would they need a separate application if it's for people who already applied through TMDSAS? Couldn't they just emphasize interviewing more applicants from those partner schools?

The program also provides include professional development, speakers and panel discussions, standardized test prep, including MCAT, volunteering and physician shadowing. It’s not just purely a category your application goes into!

Programming for this cohort will start Sept 4 (tentatively per our email) so they’re gonna cram it all in for the first group I suppose since EAP Med School acceptances will be in December.

Interesting. Seems like some of that wouldn't be able to benefit participants in this cycle (MCAT, shadowing, etc...). I think it'll be a great thing overall though, especially given how mission-focused the medical school is.

If I live in an adjacent county according to the utt map, is that a direct tie?

Isn't regional preference a geographical area of Texas as opposed to a single county?

I cant imagine we are supporting single county with a medical school when there are 254 counties in Texas.

If you are in the gray counties, I would think they would consider you to be in-region. Outside of that, I think you'd need to demonstrate a connection in some other way.

just confirming for everyone that EAP WILL impact this cycle, but imo i wouldn’t be worried abt it if you aren’t in the program. EAP allots 5 spots for UTT students, last year they accepted 8 or 9 so it’s likely gonna be 15 people who they were going to take anyways

Can anyone who has interviewed at UT Tyler please offer some words of advice/insight? I am interviewing next week and am unsure of how to prepare. Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

Just practice MMI questions ranging from situational scenarios to explaining your thoughts on hot topics. Each station covers one of their values so look into that.

Any suggestions as to some hot topics to look into? I'm also interviewing next week and trying to prepare.

I wouldn’t do any research, just practice stating your stance with empathy and sound reasoning. There’s no “right” answer!

EAP decisions come out today! This is for the 40, they will find out who the 15 with acceptances are in December.

edit: delayed until tomorrow

Tyler has EAP? - this is not early decision but the combined program?

Did you apply?
It’s a non-traditional early assurance program- I posted the link to the details a bit ago. From what I understand, you apply in your app year (Jan/Feb) and are offered free MCAT prep, community service opportunities, shadowing, etc. 40 apply, 15 get in. It’s broken down by school (UTT gets 11 seats in the program and 5 of those get in to the med school).

I did! No one has heard back yet. They may come out tomorrow as they’re meeting today.

they posted their 22-23 admissions stats!

overwhelmingly tilted for women!

First school I have seen where the applicants have the highest average, interviewed slightly lower, and enrolled even lower.

Normally it goes low applicants, high interviewed and medium enrolled.

Lots of students will hesitate to be the first class in a new school.

Is it worth preparing for traditional interview-style questions as well, or should preparing for typical MMI-style questions suffice?

I think you should know the answers to why medicine and why this school as well

For those that are interviewing, did you receive an interview invite early on?
