Can any current or recent students who participated in the pre-matriculation program comment on their experience and if they felt like it helped them? Especially looking for experience from non traditional students with several gap years

Current M1 and I did not do the program; however, if you read post online, they all say it is not worth. I took 3 gap years before starting and regardless of a premaltriculation program, you will still be shook to the core, at first, regarding the amount of material. We're talking 80% of biochem in two weeks. It is slightly manageable enough though, so enjoy your summer while you're still free. You'll thank yourself later.

Hey everyone! Im a current M1 here and I just want to say a few things. Firstly, good luck tomorrow if you've already interviewed! Regardless of the outcome, things are far from over, so regardless of the news, I hope you can appreciate how far your work has taken you thus far. Personally, I was waitlisted for months before I got accepted. Secondly, if you are accepted, feel free to join the Class of 2028 Facebook page to connect with some potential future classmates (link below). If anyone has any questions about anything regarding the process, my inbox is open. Good luck in the cycle everyone 🙂

Ah, I had no idea they mentioned that. Thank you and good luck to all!!
I heard people who are accepted usually see "tabs" on their portal around 4pm EST and the emails come at 6:05pm. Not sure if things will change this year!

interviewed late last week and just got a hold email, but my email says 10/17 for the acceptance date instead of 10/16?

Is it possible that there are still A's going out today? :'( Congrats everyone!

are they sending out more acceptances on oct 17 like the email said?
I hope so, my follow up email from the post interview hold says "We anticipate making acceptance offers on October 17th..." But I interviewed for fmSTAT so not sure if that's why it is different than the rest of y'all's or not

Is anyone sending in any thank you note for interviewing? If so, to whom did you address it to? The interviewers had their initials and no contact info was given, so would I be safe to not send one?

i sent one to the admission email and they replied to me saying they forwarded it to the admissions council, so i say its always worth a shot!

I did not get the A on the 16th - this is my top school, wondering if sending a letter of intent would be beneficial before that next offer date?

Save the LOIntent until next year towards March/April. VCU ranks the applicants. They won’t revisit your file again after the interview when they initially rank you. That is, until you get to the WL stages later in the cycle. If you didn’t get the A on 10/16, you have plenty of chances on the next three dates. If none of them work out for you, you’ll be on WL and reconsidered. That’s when you want to time your LOIntent. If you send it now, it won’t hurt. But it also has less chance it will be reviewed and will mean less when they do get to it later in the cycle.

Appreciate this insight because I’m in the same boat. Question for you however, do they not have to revisit your file in a way to know where to rank new applicants in relation to your file?

I don't know the answer to this, but an absolutely ranking system would avoid having to review your application again.

For example, if they give you a score of 84, and the score the new set of applicants, your score will be reindexed relative to the other new scores, and the would take the top n%.

Not saying this is how they do it, but that would mean they wouldn't need to review your app again.

Thanks. Totally makes sense in that setting, quantifying our apps to a number feels reductive but you’re probably correct in your assumption

Not going to lie, kinda bummed this wasn’t a haiku…

This is an appeal to applicants who have taken Casper for admission to Virginia Commonwealth University SOM.

Complete the 2023 Situational Judgment Test Experience survey.

HPSA/SDN has the 2023 SJT Experience Survey available to anyone preparing for SJTs (especially Casper and PREview). If you completed the 2022 survey, you are welcome to go ahead and complete the survey again. This survey consists of multiple pages and will take up to 10 minutes. You can also place yourself on a waitlist for a study focusing more on school-run SJTs run through platforms like Kira Talent, to be released later in the year.

Your feedback matters!
We learned a lot about how applicants prepared for Casper and PREview last year, but the number of PREview schools has almost doubled this cycle! Over 20% of all AMCAS applicants will likely have taken PREview, and up to 90% of all medical school applicants will likely have taken Casper this cycle (according to Acuity Insights). This does not include applicants in non-medical professions who have had to take these assessments for admission to physician assistant, anesthesiology assistant, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or physical therapy programs, where we see a trend that applicants with higher Casper results are preferred. Medical residency applicants are also being asked to complete Acuity Insights Assessments, and very little is known about how program directors use these data. Your responses are vital to get objective insights on how admissions committees value the results of these exams.

Your feedback matters!
We want to hear from as many people as possible, especially those attending or applying outside of medicine (MD/DO). This year saw an expansion of SJTs in admissions, and more information has been made available on preparing for these assessments. We want to stay current with these trends to guide future applicants and students facing these SJTs.

Many of our findings from the 2022 survey align with the NAAHP Testing Task Force report released last summer. This includes concerns about proctoring, consistency of scoring, and concern that applicants are paying for validity research. But we need more student voices to gain a louder voice to advocate for future health professional school applicants.

Your feedback has helped HPSA develop a workshop focused on preparing for SJTs like Casper and PREview. This workshop is part of our Becoming a Student Doctor preparation course, and we have already had some positive results among those who have participated in our mock interview workshops. An updated workshop will be presented at the UC Davis Prehealth Conference on October 14, and we welcome opportunities to present the full-length SJT workshop to your campus!

Fill out this survey and help future applicants become physicians in their chosen profession!

Only if you are on the alternate list
Not necessarily. You are allowed to send update letters or LOIs throughout the cycle after your interview. But I recommend doing so only if you have very meaningful things to say. I would also hold off until towards the end of the cycle after you get on alternate list, assuming you don't get the A on the next few decision release dates. They ranked you already and won't revisit your application until the wait list stage so if anything, hold off until the end. That being said, it still won't hurt you to do so now. It just may not be considered until later.

"DO NOT submit additional materials or updates. The college accepts additional information only when an applicant is placed in the alternate pool after interview or by Committee request" - from their website

Interesting. This was on their website last year as well. However, I've submitted LOIs and update letters to them last year and were both added to my file. No way of knowing if they reviewed them but you are still allowed to submit them. Take that for what you will but what's the worst that could happen?
