I personally have a 14in MacBook Pro that I got right before starting M1 and I have loved it! I halfway through undergrad, I got an iPad Pro 11in, so I brought that with me to med school. I personally love taking notes on lecture slides, so my iPad+laptop combo was my go to during M1/M2. Halfway through M1, I purchased an external monitor from Costco (I think it was around $100 because of a Black Friday sale). This was a game changer when studying for exams specifically because I could have practice questions pulled up on my laptop and an external resource/lecture slides/lecture notes pulled up on my monitor. That being said, an iPad and external monitor definitely aren't necessary (whereas a laptop definitely will be)! You can figure out what combo of devices you want what your previous study methods have been. You can always buy devices throughout the year, but it would suck to purchase devices because you think you will use them and then they just end up sitting in a drawer!

As for clerkships, I have heard that some students like to take their iPads around with them. I don't see myself doing that personally because I feel like I might misplace it or it could just get dirty. So I plan on just using a notebook and then having my laptop and iPad in my bag to do practice questions during my downtime.

The only other things I can think of that you will need to buy are a stethoscope and a pair of (crappy) scrubs. The Littmann Classic III and Cardiology IV are two popular options. A lot of people go with the classic because it's about half the price of the cardiology IV, but it's totally up to you. I can't hear to save my life lol, so I went with the cardiology IV to help with that. Different websites run sales from time to time, so you could keep an eye out for that!

For anatomy lab, you will need at least one pair of scrubs. Don't go out and buy a pair of figs for this! I wore a pair of scrubs that I got for free at my old job and even though I washed them after every single anatomy lab the second I got home, they still have a hint of formaldehyde scent to them. So use a pair that you already have that isn't nice, go to a thrift store, or wait until the sale we have at Wayne. At the beginning of the year, there's a sale where they sell used scrubs that were donated by previous students for really cheap. I personally wouldn't wait for this sale to buy your only pair of scrubs for lab because they have limited quantity. I suggest coming to school with a pair you don't really care about and if you want to buy a second pair, try to snag one at the sale! Also an odd thing you will need is a clipboard for anatomy practicals. This cannot be a clear clipboard though (see through colored plastic counts as clear too)! It needs to be an opaque clipboard for your 3 practicals (think of the brown clipboards your teachers used in elementary/middle school). I found one at my grocery store, but I remember being annoyed that I had to go get it the week before my first practical haha

M4 here, and I’ve used my iPad mini a lot during my rotations. If you have bad hand writing like I do it’s a lifesaver, plus you can carry it on rounds and look things up/access patient charts without having to lug around a laptop.

Casual clothes 99% of the time. As long as it's appropriate, you can wear it. Business casual to clinical skills, clinic, and P4. Make sure you have at least 2 outfits to rotate through in case you have to dress up twice in a week. Bring an iron or a steamer because your white coat has to be neat for these. And then scrubs for anatomy lab!

Are lectures online and live? How often do we have to be on campus each week?
 
What advice would u guys give to me. I have an upcoming interview on February 25th? I am out of state.

Things have changed in the last year since I was an M1. Lectures are all asynchronous (so you watch them at your own pace online, but you have a schedule you are given each day with which lectures they recommend you watch each day). Anatomy lab is twice a week. Histo lab is usually 1-2 times a week (this is swapped with neuro lab during your last block). Team practice is 1-2 times a week. Clinical Skills is 2-3 times a block (averages to be about once a month). P4 is once a week. Everything I listed above (besides lectures) is in person. Pharm sessions were online my year but I think they're in person now. They happen maybe twice a block. PBL sessions are like once a block (they're broken up into two 1.5 sessions two days apart) and they were online my year. Not sure about now. I would say you're for sure on campus 3-4 times a week. From time to time, you're in person 5 days a week. During M2, we were in person 4-5 times a week.

You have exams 3 times a block plus three extra exams at the end of the block (1 block = 3 months). You have a 1 week break at the end of each block.

Alternatively, I would recommend buying Cold Iron Wrinkle Release Spray (just make sure to get the fragrance free version). I use it all the time as an M3/M4 when I need to rewear my white coat between washes (although as an M3/M4 I have worn my white coat during less than half of my rotations).

P4 stands for Population, Patient, Physician, and Professionalism. It is a longitudinal course across M1+M2 that covers social determinants of health, special populations, public health, and the art of medicine.

I received an email in December from someone reaching out and saying I'd be a good fit at the school and to submit my secondary. At first glance it looked copy and pasted and I didn't even read it but after taking another look almost a month later I noticed they wrote about how they are from my family's home country (so they read my primary and my story?) and that they are waiving the secondary fee for me. I saw some people post a similar question and some people responded saying that it was a way to make more secondary money, but why would they be so personal and waive my secondary fee? Anyone else get something like this? Should I email back a month later? Should I still submit? Are there interview spots left?

Check the school's website to see when the deadline for Secondary applications is.

Learn from this experience to read every email from a med school sentence by sentence to the very end!
 
hey guys i am in my junior year in my second semester right now, and I am only taking 4 courses instead of 5 (so 12 credit hours instead of 15). Will that make me look bad? Will it hinder my application for med school?

has there anyone who has not completed a full load schedule and still got an II or A here?

12 credit hours is full time. You are good.

so is it like pity points? I was under the impression that it didn't matter at all as long as u graduate and have ur pre reqs before marticulation.

Also I've taken 15 hour creds my first semester of this junior year, its just the second semester im only taking 4 courses is that really considered light T_T

What? No. Doing well in college is the goal and mastering the material. A person doesn’t need to prove how tough they are by taking a large number of hours each semester.

Hey guys, I got my waitlist in December (the 14th to be exact), and I have sent an update/letter of intent, as well as an updated transcript. Is there anything else I can do? I really wanna go here, I just don't know what else to do. It's been a very stressful month, so any help is appreciated. Also, what are my chances of getting in? (511 MCAT, 3.7 GPA, 1500 clinical hours)

they assume some people will not accept, also class sizes vary

I've heard schools usually accept around 2x or more their class size. So probably still a few more outright acceptances, and pulling from WL as people drop their A's

Even though wayne doesn't have a neurosurgery program, can wayne med students still try to specialize in neurosurgery after taking steps2 and applying for residency?

Medical students can apply to any specialty they want. People just look for home programs for competitive specialties because it makes it easier to match.
