Good evening my little pre meds. I have caught up with my studying for the first time since medical school started back in July. That is until I do a semesters worth of genetics tomorrow, but I digress.
My name is Howdie, but you can call me Howdie. I’m a first year here at Tech and I wanted to stop by and provide some words of encouragement to all those participating in this year’s app cycle.
To those who have gotten a pre-match, congratulations! You worked so very hard to get here and you should be proud of yourself. I know many of you are still receiving interviews and hoping to pre-match elsewhere, but do me a favor and enjoy this. Once you start med school you won’t have time to eat, speak, or even think. So, take some time to yourself and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Read a fun novel, go travel, spent time with friends, family, or your pet. Do something that you genuinely enjoy before it’s time to buckle in, trust me.
To those who haven’t even gotten as much as a sniff from a Texas school, relax and take a breath. I didn’t receive my Tech interview until mid December, and it was the only Texas school I got (even TCOM and SHSU rejected me). I know you’re itching to know my stats and I guess I’ll share because I know how it feels to be in your shoes: 3.4, 509, and a 1st quartile CASPer. Think I should’ve tried Harvard, maybe Hopkins? I probably would have had better luck there. Needless to say, if I got in, you can too. Just be patient, and if it doesn’t happen this cycle, don’t give up, and try again next year (it took me 3 cycles, shocker, I know). Tech isn’t a one size fits all school. I know people with 515s and 504s, no research and 6 pubs, 4.0s and 3.4s (hey that’s me! 😀). Don’t panic too much about your app, it does no good now. What is it, October? November? I’ve lost track of time. Anywho, I remember refreshing SDN 60-70 times a day and checking my email just as much, praying for a sliver of hope. There’s still plenty of time left in this cycle so hold your horses partner. I’m confident that each of you will become a doctor one day.
Reach out to me if you must, I won’t be bothered and I’m happy to answer questions you may have. It may be 2036 by the time I reply, but I’ll do my best. Is Wysdoc’s reply above me? Tell Wysdoc I said hi when you get a chance. Okay enough rambling, it’s time to listen to some Debussy before I snooze.
Godspeed guys. Remember, heads up, focus on becoming the best version of yourself, and don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.
Goodnight y’all
(P.S. I ain’t proofreadin’ that)
