So uh, what kind of stats would one need to have to be on the elite december admissions crew? Do you know of anyone accepted then and what kind of MCAT/GPA they had?

I know 3 of the 5 people who were accepted early, and they all had exceptional scores and experience. I believe all of them were in the 3.7/35 range or better. Since they're accepting 20 people this time, you can count on those numbers dropping noticeably.

Have any OOS'ers had any luck yet?

So Milkman, do the OOS interview invites come via snail mail? Or via E-mail?

I'm excited to find out if I'll get to come down there for an interview!

I got my invite via email from Ms. DuPuy. The interview was slated for early January at some point, but she mentioned that there were still spots available for the Dec. 15 session. I decided earlier was better and went with that.

Well, like I said, I got my invite a couple days before they claimed the adcom would be meeting. I think that's more a deadline than a set date. You can't really expect them to sort through ~2000 apps in one day. Anyway, good luck to all of you! Hopefully I'll be seeing you down here in January. 🙂

That was just a rough estimate. I think there were just over 1300 OOS applicants last year. It'll probably be pretty similar this year, I guess. Also, many of the OOS students here don't have ties to Arkansas.

Yea, I was surprised by the specific number 2000, more by the fact that it was in the thousands period... Don't they only have space for 32 out of state applicants? Anyway, best of luck to everyone as they meet and decide!

Not necessarily. Applicants have until Monday 4:30p to confirm. I would think that after that, they'd give out the spots to those that didn't reply or declined.

I was under the impression that no OOS student could displace a qualified IS student (what ever their definition of "qualified" may be - someone correct me if I'm wrong here). Along that reasoning it wouldn't make sense to me to accept an OOS student so early on, because this could potentially displace another qualified IS applicant later on. Again, this is all conjecture.

i was told last year that all oos acceptances go out in feb. and not during the early acceptance date. things might have changed though. i also think they have a number of oos students that they accept and have 2 waitlists (1 oos, 1 is) despite their 'displacement' policy... however that's purely speculation.

It's a closed interview, so the best you can do is know answers for "Tell me about yourself" "Why medicine?" and "Why UAMS?" and have a reasonable grip on health care in the U.S.

I'm not really sure how the waitlist works, but I've heard that for OOS people, waitlist=acceptance, more or less.

Seriously, I've never had a clue how to answer this question w/o a prompt (like "anything in particular that you'd like to hear about", or else I'd talk about hunting, fishing, and mission trips; most likely in that order)

I went with where I'm from, a little bit of family history, what my interests were, how I became interested in science and medicine in particular. That seemed to work decently.

I don't know what they ask the MD/PhD students, but if I see the only one I know in the days before break, I'll ask her.

I'd rather just skip the whole waitlist thing and just get accepted . I know that I'll pretty much go with whatever school accepts me as an MD/PhD (or just MD for that matter), and I'd rather end up in a cooler place like Little Rock instead of OKC, oh well, just got to woo those schools in January, and hopefully I get a few more interviews in the meantime.

And milkman, how is the whole MD thing compared to the physics major, I have a hard time contemplating something that is conceptually harder than this major, although I know that there can be a huge increase in workload (unfortunately...)

It's totally different. Physics is definitely harder - a lot harder, even - but I think most people will tell you that med school's difficulty is from the volume of information thrown at you, not the difficulty of the material.

There is some stuff that seems "hard"... But so far it seems to me that is just when you are applying physics to human physiology... Laplace's law, poiseuille's law, etc.. Or trying to keep track of the regulatory mechanisms for for cardiac output under different conditions. So far in my SMP, I've found the material related to regulation of blood flow to fairly difficult...

I wasn't a physics major but I'd agree that physics is harder, but volume is definitely more in medicine...

Well, the classes are graded separately, but they're all integrated by organ system. That is, you'll have all your cardio anatomy, cardio phys, and cardio embryology together, for example. You'll have a test every 2-3 weeks, and they usually have between 130-160 multiple choice questions. Practicals are in the afternoons and are done in 4 hour-long rotations. The students (M4's) who had a year of traditional curriculum and a year of the integrated curriculum much prefer the current set up, and it has only gotten better since then.
