So uh, what kind of stats would one need to have to be on the elite december admissions crew? Do you know of anyone accepted then and what kind of MCAT/GPA they had?
I know 3 of the 5 people who were accepted early, and they all had exceptional scores and experience. I believe all of them were in the 3.7/35 range or better. Since they're accepting 20 people this time, you can count on those numbers dropping noticeably.

Have any OOS'ers had any luck yet?
You should be getting your interview invites shortly. I got mine a few days before they claimed the adcom was meeting (Dec 5 or something), so expect an invite somewhere in a 3-4 day halo of that date.

:xf:

So Milkman, do the OOS interview invites come via snail mail? Or via E-mail?

I'm excited to find out if I'll get to come down there for an interview!

EDIT: And when did you interview as an OOS last year, wasn't it in December some time?

I'm definitely chilling with the Milkman if I get picked.

I got my invite via email from Ms. DuPuy. The interview was slated for early January at some point, but she mentioned that there were still spots available for the Dec. 15 session. I decided earlier was better and went with that.

If anyone wants to hang out while you're here, drop me a PM for my contact info.

How does UAMS notify you if you've been accepted? Email, letter, and/or calls?

Any OOSers hear anything yet this week? Should be soon I think!

They're supposed to meet Dec. 12th to discuss the OOS'ers.

Well, like I said, I got my invite a couple days before they claimed the adcom would be meeting. I think that's more a deadline than a set date. You can't really expect them to sort through ~2000 apps in one day. Anyway, good luck to all of you! Hopefully I'll be seeing you down here in January. 🙂

They get over 2000 out of state apps!? 😱

I had no idea there were so many pre-meds with ties to Arkansas!

That's good to hear. I was skeptical of them pulling this off in one day.

That was just a rough estimate. I think there were just over 1300 OOS applicants last year. It'll probably be pretty similar this year, I guess. Also, many of the OOS students here don't have ties to Arkansas.

Yea, I was surprised by the specific number 2000, more by the fact that it was in the thousands period... Don't they only have space for 32 out of state applicants? Anyway, best of luck to everyone as they meet and decide!

I also got my invite a few days before their deadline last year. However, acceptances/waitlists/rejections do go out on the exact day they tell you (it was terrible waiting over the weekend).

Well since the deadline is tomorrow for OOS interviews I guess either they already sent them out and those of us on here didn't get one, or we are looking at today or tomorrow!

OOS Invite for 1/10

This is the only interview date for OOS applicants. They're bringing in ~120 all for this day. Wow

I guess that does it for me, then.

Not necessarily. Applicants have until Monday 4:30p to confirm. I would think that after that, they'd give out the spots to those that didn't reply or declined.

All right, who am I going to be hanging out with in a few weeks?

Alright, Jan. 10th!!! Very excited... So Milkman it looks like we'll get to meet after all!

Hey dwc929 I noticed on your MDapps that you interviewed at SLU the same day as me and that you were from UCLA....I think I may have talked to you on interview day there, if you are the guy I'm thinking of we talked about basketball for a while. Guess I'll be seeing you in AR soon! If its the wrong person, sorry!

I thought that was a kinda crazy fast turn around. Had I been out of town, I could have completely missed the email.

So, Al, know of anyone thats willing to put up an applicant for the night before the interview? My UAMS friends graduated and got jobs (losers...) in other parts of the state.

I might. I'll see if anyone with a house nearby is willing.

Awesome! If necessary, tell them that I could bring an offering of deer burger with me as well (that works in Arkansas just like in Oklahoma, right?)😀

So question... OOSers interview on the 10th... On their calendar they say Jan. 17th letters go out to "early accepts" are those of the OOSers who interviewed on the 10th that they want to extend early accepts to?

I was under the impression that no OOS student could displace a qualified IS student (what ever their definition of "qualified" may be - someone correct me if I'm wrong here). Along that reasoning it wouldn't make sense to me to accept an OOS student so early on, because this could potentially displace another qualified IS applicant later on. Again, this is all conjecture.

i was told last year that all oos acceptances go out in feb. and not during the early acceptance date. things might have changed though. i also think they have a number of oos students that they accept and have 2 waitlists (1 oos, 1 is) despite their 'displacement' policy... however that's purely speculation.

Has anyone heard about what kind of questions they ask in specific?

It's a closed interview, so the best you can do is know answers for "Tell me about yourself" "Why medicine?" and "Why UAMS?" and have a reasonable grip on health care in the U.S.

I'm not really sure how the waitlist works, but I've heard that for OOS people, waitlist=acceptance, more or less.

Seriously, I've never had a clue how to answer this question w/o a prompt (like "anything in particular that you'd like to hear about", or else I'd talk about hunting, fishing, and mission trips; most likely in that order)

Anyone know what they ask the MD/PhD applicants?

I went with where I'm from, a little bit of family history, what my interests were, how I became interested in science and medicine in particular. That seemed to work decently.

I don't know what they ask the MD/PhD students, but if I see the only one I know in the days before break, I'll ask her.

wish i knew that last year... it would have saved me a lot of worry!

So that means that if we as OOSers interview and then are waitlisted we are essentially accepted?

Thats great to know!

Whoa, maybe I shouldn't have said that. It's a rumor I've heard from 2 people - one in my class, and one M2 - so I don't have any solid evidence to back it up. That said, every OOS person I've mentioned being waitlisted to (which would be maybe 10 people) was also waitlisted. Don't put too much stock in it.

haha, now when an OOSer on here gets waitlisted and rejected they are going to send you hate mail...

Seriously though, while not definitive that is enough to at least give those of us who may be waitlisted hope...

I'd rather just skip the whole waitlist thing and just get accepted . I know that I'll pretty much go with whatever school accepts me as an MD/PhD (or just MD for that matter), and I'd rather end up in a cooler place like Little Rock instead of OKC, oh well, just got to woo those schools in January, and hopefully I get a few more interviews in the meantime.

And milkman, how is the whole MD thing compared to the physics major, I have a hard time contemplating something that is conceptually harder than this major, although I know that there can be a huge increase in workload (unfortunately...)

It's totally different. Physics is definitely harder - a lot harder, even - but I think most people will tell you that med school's difficulty is from the volume of information thrown at you, not the difficulty of the material.

There is some stuff that seems "hard"... But so far it seems to me that is just when you are applying physics to human physiology... Laplace's law, poiseuille's law, etc.. Or trying to keep track of the regulatory mechanisms for for cardiac output under different conditions. So far in my SMP, I've found the material related to regulation of blood flow to fairly difficult...

I wasn't a physics major but I'd agree that physics is harder, but volume is definitely more in medicine...

So Milkman, how often are their exams at UAMS? It is a traditional curriculum right, with separate courses in biochem, physio, embryo, etc?

Well, the classes are graded separately, but they're all integrated by organ system. That is, you'll have all your cardio anatomy, cardio phys, and cardio embryology together, for example. You'll have a test every 2-3 weeks, and they usually have between 130-160 multiple choice questions. Practicals are in the afternoons and are done in 4 hour-long rotations. The students (M4's) who had a year of traditional curriculum and a year of the integrated curriculum much prefer the current set up, and it has only gotten better since then.

That sounds awesome... Georgetown just switched to that this year, and generally I like it.

How well does UAMS curriculum flow together? For example: Do you learn cardio embryo before you learn about the first 20 days and development of the different germ layers? With our Cardio unit they through us in and the first embryo class was Cardio, which was really confusing.

Sounds like some really intense test days, but it sounds great!

How much time do you spend in class as an M1 at UAMS? Is there a note taking service? Do they record lectures?

Thanks for sharing Milkman, it is cool of you to answer all of our questions!

I'm confused, have you been an M1 before?
