Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview day was great. I seriously fell in love with the school, students and city. Side note do NOT stay at hotel ft des moines, super low quality and not cheap either. The admissions staff was great, the dean was awesome and really sold me on the school. All the students were super super nice, seriously no gunners I could identify. The student giving us the tour was hilarious. I interviewed with Dr. Steele and a student named Brian. They had some softball questions and some that I wasn't prepared for. I really hope I get in. This school has shot up to the top 3 on my list. Let me know if you have any questions. They said we'll hear back within three weeks but the guy we toured with said they let him know a week after his interview. Good Luck!
Do you have any advice on how to prepare for those questions? I mean besides studying your application. I'm kind of nervous as this will be my first interview, but I'm really excited because this school sounds like the perfect fit for me!

Just got a II!!!! Only thing that I can see that can hold me back is the fact that DMU doesn't seem to have much clinical research, and I'm very interested in doing clinical research since that leads to s greater chance of publication. Any current students care to comment?

Will you prepare for your first date? Just be yourself, know your secondary essays and don't overdo it

When were you marked complete/completed secondary?

I am not a student and by no means an expert. But I'm fairly certain that as far as DO schools go, DMU is one of the best for research. There are tons of opportunities for student research there.

I agree with what @becomingdoctor said. But if I was to do one thing differently, I would do a mock interview or two so that I could practice being clear and concise.

I'll add one other thing from the interview. I believe they said the stats of the class of 2019 were 3.65/3.61 and 28.8. So pretty darn high for DO. And the people I spoke with/interviewed with were almost all high stats applicants. N=1 so don't read too much into DMU being a stat-centric school.

Glad you enjoyed the interview day - it's pretty wild only being 3 weeks into class and already seeing them start up interviews again. The stats for 2019 are good, but do not by any means discount your chances if you don't hit them. I got a chance to say hey to a couple of you guys but the 1st years were in the midst of the first big exam so it got pretty reclusive for a couple days!

While I did get an Interview from here and it is a top choice DO school for me in addition to KCU (Waiting for a hopeful II from here as well), I have developed a very cynical view that med schools are all extremely stat centric. And honestly I've been trying to get rid of it. But no matter how I look at it, it just seems like 80 percent of your application is two overrated numbers.

Yeah I didn't see anyone that looked like grover. But can you go ask Gina and Matt to accept me please?! This is going to be the longest three weeks! Please let me in!

Agreed. And probably to the detriment of exceptional applicants. I know that there are thousands of people with worse stats than mine who are way more intelligent and suited for the medical profession than myself. And I am going to steal their seat because I happened to score a couple points higher in a couple classes and the MCAT.

Don't sweat it too much, i would be really surprised if it took them 3 weeks to give you a decision. Our admissions department always seems to work ridiculously fast. If it's any indication of how fast they go, they were still working on getting all the first years through orientation while sending out IIs for you. They're on their game.

Med school admissions is a very sad state of affairs. I understand wanting qualified applicants but if their MCAT and gpa is within a reasonable range of your schools' average matriculant stats, then give them a shot. I know some schools do practice this holistic approach, but many schools do not .... especially many MD schools.

It's just a game. At the end of the day, it won't matter a damn thing in the grand scheme of things. Save your energy for more important things in life.

Some have only two. But i think it is generally three

The dean of DMU just remind me of a famous British actor (guess who?).
I actually learned a lot from him about DO as a profession, he provided some unique insight on"why DO" and "DO vs MD".
Anyway, for those who interviewed in the past two days should generally have a very good chance at DMU, good luck to my all fellow interviewees.

Anyone receive an interview date was completed after august 7?

Interviews typically come on Tuesdays from Des Moines right? Any one get anything today?

Can anyone who goes to school or has interviewed comment on transportation? What's the easiest way to get to/from airport and school? Uber, cab?

Your best bet is to book a room at a place that has a shuttle. The school has an agreement with the Hampton by the airport and they will pick you up at the airport, take you to your interview the next day and pick you up from school after your interview and take you back to the airport. Definitely takes that little bit of stress out of your interview day knowing you don't have to worry about how to get from Point A to Point B. If I recall correctly it was pretty cheap too, maybe $80 for the night?

If you want to go the Uber route, from my place by school to the bars/hotel area downtown the Uber is about $5 or less.

^Agreed. I took the bus and there is a stop right near the school. It was like 2$. I also took a taxi from the airport to downtown and it was like 16$ so not terrible.

Anybody receive a secondary app without having an official MCAT on file? 🙁 I really want a shot at this school!!

Appreciate the advice. Unfortunately my hotel is a tad far away from campus, but will manage somehow.

Des Moines is such an easy city to get around. Cabs are relatively cheap and Uber is always a great option here. If you're nervous about getting to campus on time, you can always go a little early and check out the campus while you wait or find a student to chat with - there are always some milling around the café or sitting at the tables outside.

Does DMU interview people off their II waitlist? It seems like a very polite rejection to me.

II today as well. Unfortunately I can't attend any of the dates in September. Emailed them to figure out what to do. Does anyone know if they release further interview dates later? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for all your help osteohack and gl to those interviewing today. Just landed here, love the rain. No such thing exists in California anymore

I already interviewed with Des Moines, but I'm wondering what does the turnover from secondary to interview mean? Generally the quicker the better....? My secondary was complete 8/3 and I received the interview 8/4. Is that normal?

Hopefully we hear back about acceptances soon so we don't have to wonder this kind of stuff.

Secondary submitted! I would love to get an II here tomorrow lol :luck:

Interviewing the 3rd. Any students/whoever in the area willing to let me crash on their couch the 2nd and 3rd?

I got the complete email 8/5... still no news! Could anyone tell me their time line in terms of how long after they got their complete email it was when they received the interview invite? Thanks! Good luck everyone
