So I had officialy decided to go to Indiana U and then recieved a call offering me a place in UCSD's class. I am pretty confused because I had all but given up on hearing from UCSD and had planned my move to Indy. Here is some details of my dilemma, I would appreciate any advice 😳
I am OOS for both schools.
UC schools offer the option to apply for in state tuition after the first year (I would try to do this) if you satisfy certain requirements.
Indiana does not allow you to recieve in state tuition unless you marry in IN resident (which I don't see happening since I am in a serious relationship)
The difference in cost for tution is just under 60,000, with UCSD being the cheaper school tuition wise. This only takes into consideration tuition, fees, and health insurance, not cost of living.
Since I thought I was definitely going to IU, I have found a KICK ASS apartment in a great location, have bought furniture and parking passes, etc.
I have extensive family in IN and some family in San Diego.
I am not sure as to which specialty I want to pursue, but probably not family practice (I tend to be interested in more specialized options)
Both schools have awesome hospital affiliations. Indy's campus is almost brand new, but that isn't a big deal.
Perhaps the most difficult things is that I have been accepted into a very competive Spanish program that spans the whole 4 years at Indiana which has the goal of getting students comfortable enough with medical Spanish that they can become DELE certified (basically certified as bilingual doctors). There are classes, physician shadowing opportunities, health fairs, and international volunteer opportunities in central America. I am also on the main campus in Indianapolis.
Being so close to Mexico, UCSD has Spanish opportunities very similar to IU, only they are not really organized for students to become DELE certified. They have shadowing, clinic, and classroom opportunities. They also have international volunteer opportunities in Mexico after the first year.
UCSD has a block-schedule so you focus on a few classes at a time, where as Indiana has all classes at once over the course of the year.
I think the grading systems are very similar.
Throughout most of the application process, my first choice has been UCSD, until I didn't think it was really an option and things with INdy really started falling into place. I know they are both great schools, I just have to analyze everything so I don't have any regrets in the future. You know how us med students are 🙂 Anyway, I really appreciate the help!!
