Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Took a look at the campus today and it's really pretty 🙂 the med school building is still under construction but looks like it's coming along nicely. Excited/nervous for tomorrow! Yay! 😀

Ok so quick semi-dumb question about the MMI for anyone who was interviewed already. The confirmation email says it "consist of 6 stations where you will have 10 minutes to read and to respond to a case to demonstrate your understanding of the topic," and then there is a face-to-face interview. Are the first 6 stations written or oral? It was my understanding that at other schools with MMI, you were providing your responses to an interviewer at each station. Thanks!

I interview tomorrow, but given the point of MMI, I would put all my money on oral response. MMI's are about observing interpersonal skills, so I can't see them judging this with written response.

Good luck!

I interviewed today! It went very well, there are 6 scenarios you work through with an interviewer. There is also a break station and a 20 min personalized interview.

Also interviewed today 🙂 all oral responses. Was very nervous pre-MMI but I actually liked it better than the normal interview format. The interviewers were all super nice and easy to talk to. I could really see this as a place I could go to! Good luck to everyone 😀

DrMeows, I'm glad to hear you liked it! I interview in two weeks and am so so excited. I was able to get a glance at the building and campus when I was back in Indy visiting a couple weeks back. I'm so excited to learn more!

Best of luck everyone interviewing 🙂

I loved this school. Interview was really relaxed, interviewers were friendly and personable. Made me feel very calm during the big inspection. Oh and MMI is hands down the greatest interview I have ever had.

+1 to everything you said! Were you there Friday or Saturday? I'm so anxious to hear back from them in a few days!! :scared:

How did you guys prepare for the interview?! I've just been looking up practice questions from other schools. Are any of you at liberty to share a sample question/situation from the interviews?

They didn't say if we could share the situations or not, but I'm going to say we probably can't. I watched a couple you tube videos to get myself familiar with how to tackle questions, but other than that I didn't really do anything. Honestly if you have common sense you can figure them out I think - it's not so much a right or wrong answer as it is how you critically think about things. The situations are not necessarily medically related, but all they all somehow relate to a decision you may have to deal with as a physician. Hope that helps! And don't freak out (I did) and I ended up liking it A LOT better than the traditional style. Good luck 🙂

For all of you that applied and received interviews would you mind sharing your statistics. I submitted my application and am waiting to here back. I have a poor MCAT score, but everything else is above average including excellent extra curricular activities. I am also a Chicago resident.

I creeped through your posts 🙂D) and your stats are perfectly fine for this school - people with MCAT scores lower than you got IIs already. Good luck! PM me if you want to know more about me, but I feel like being as anonymous as possible for the time being 😳

I agree that the MMI format was enjoyable, however, I am glad that they made it somewhat hybrid by including a traditional style interview component. It was nice to be able to focus on myself as a person and discuss what I can bring to the school. I am curious if the traditional interview station carries more weight (since it is twice as long as any other station and has two interviewers present) or how that station was critiqued...but who knows.

The good thing about the MMI is that there are multiple stations with different interviewers...so if you feel you didn't vibe as well with an interviewer or if you found a discussion prompt to be challenging you are able to move on after that station and start with a clean slate. Can't neccessarily do this in the ole traditional style interview! The traditional style interview seems more personal though...as in, the interviewers get a feel for you as a person and what makes you tick--- rather than just your interpretation of how you would react in hypothetical situations or to vague, open ended prompts. So once again, I liked that they combined the two styles in their process. I can see why both forms are useful when evaluating candidates.

Overall MU-COM has really big plans of becoming a great medical school and it seems that they have the neccessary support, networks and know-how to do so. I was impressed by the school and enjoyed meeting the folks that were there with me that day! Good luck all!

Does anyone know if there has been any discussion of a possible tuition break for the first year's class? I know that in the past some medical schools (such as FAU) have given their first class a full ride as an incentive for going to a new medical school. Does anybody know if this has been considered at all? Thank you!

......................................no.

Somebody's got to be the bad news bearer. No DO school as far as I'm aware has ever done this and that's saying something considering the amount of new ones that have opened in the last 20 years.

At my interview they said it was something they were looking into soon.

My apologies if I'm wrong... I haven't heard any rumblings about this. I also figure the SDN thread will explode if this is true

I think what u said was correct. It doesn't make sense to have free tuition because there are plenty of people out there willing to pay money to go to a med school (even if it's a new school). It doesn't make sense for the school financially, in my opinion.

Haha I just winged it. They change all of the questions that we were given, or so they say. Regardless, just RELAX. It was an enjoyable experience. I don't believe they discussed tuition breaks (Cohort O), tuition $40,000.

I was also on 10/5, DrMeows. I think I seen you there.

Just wanted to say a quick bit about how awesome Marian was!

Wow...what a set up they have there!! I was very happy with everything I heard and saw. MMI's were great, the school has a wonderful outlook on medicine and will no doubt be a leader in Osteopathic education/training and beyond from year one.

I'd love to be a part of this school!!

Yay glad you liked it too!!! I'll cross my fingers for both of us this week 😀 :xf: :xf: :xf:

Did you know which one I was? You were in the cohort after me. I hope I didn't give myself away 🙄 Which one were you?!

Did i miss this? All i remember them saying is the cost of tuition ($40,000) 😕

Yes, remember he said that they have been talking to indiana legislature about tuition breaks for commitments to practice in indiana. Could i have heard him wrong? He said he couldnt promise anything but they would be talking later in the month. Obviously it wont be free but discounted maybe.

Okay, nevermind. Clearly i didnt read the actual question, i thought it was about tuition discounts.

Maybe I missed it, which is weird because I'm the one that asked about tuition! Lol but I'm not doubting you - he definitely could have said somthing like that. Ah well, we will see I guess! 😳

Haha surprisingly I haven't (and I'm super neurotic!). I'm trying to believe Mr. Moody with him telling us we will know another way before the portal changes 😳 only 4 more days!!!

Was Friday the date you were given to hear decisions? Dr. Evans made it sound like it could be Monday as well...

We were told Friday but there could be a chance we could be pushed back to the next day with the group that interviewed the day after us if they didn't get to all 21 people. So I was under the impression if we didn't hear Friday we would hear Saturday 😕

 Oh well, it is still a pretty fast turn around if it ends up being any of these days I suppose. GL!

True. But even with a week I find myself being impatient 🙄 I should probably stop complaining because we're pretty much halfway through the wait!
