Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Debating if I want to fork over the $$ for the secondary here. They keep sending me reminder emails to submit the secondary. This decision would be so much easier if interviews were not so expensive. Decisions, decisions...😕

After significant deliberation upon my secondary essays. I finally turned this bad boy in...it will probably take a while to become complete and :xf: for interview invite.

At least I will stop getting reminder e-mail! I did it now!!! Only e-mail I want is INTERVIEW INVITE! LOL

I think they have a pretty decent turn around, they seem very organized for a new school!

I decided to interview on Oct. 20th. I have interviews every week until then. Im not sure if my poor little car is going to make it lol

Me...and I'll be bringing the force with me as well.😀

Seriously! If I didn't take the first weekend I woulda had to wait a couple of weeks 🙁 here's to being the ultimate interview guinea pig 😛 😳

Did this pop up as the progress bar came to completion?

The file was under the limit... when I hit upload it just disappeared and that was the end of it. Still shows "no photo". Hmm, guess I'll try again later or tomorrow.

haha...something like that.

Hmmm, having you tried turning off and on again? 😉

Hope it works for you....

Does a letter from a Pre medical committee satisfy both advisor and science faculty lor requirements?

The CIB states they need three...committee (or advisor), science faculty and Doc. You can substitute another science faculty for the committee letter.

So, no, you still need a science faculty from my understanding

Wasn't working for me with Internet Explorer. Tried it again with Firefox last night and it worked. 👍

Ok MU-COM, where are these "weekend II's"? I'm thinking they'll send more tomorrow.

Probably - they seem to have random glitches in their system. I'm sure more will go out tomorrow, and you will get one of them 🙂 👍

I finished filling out the essays for this secondary, and marked 'request fee waiver' (I got an AACOMAS fee waiver.) It says my essays/secondary are complete, but it says 'request pending' under payment. I can't seem to certify the secondary either. Do I need to wait until they approve the fee waiver?

I'm not super familiar with the fee waiver thing, but don't all schools have to certify/verify it? If you did all this today I'm sure they'll have it done by Monday or Tuesday. If not (or if it's been a while), I'd just give the office a call 👍

Looks like I got an interview from Marian. I have to say, this has got to be one of the most organized schools out there. You'd think they have been doing this for decades.

They don't have an incoming class to keep them busy right now, so they've got plenty of time. It will probably not be the same case next cycle.

You should email them about the fee waiver. That sped up the process for me 🙂

Congrats to those with interviews. 🙂

I wouldn't worry about glitches, it's their first year and we all know how technology works-it's bound to happen!

Stay hopeful everyone, I'm right there with ya! 🙂

Congrats! Do you mind if I ask when your application was 'complete'?
🙂

Thanks! I was hoping for a spot on 10/5 so I'd be there with someone I "knew". 🙂

 I TOTES understand. I get very excited when my SDN friends are on the same date as me for interviews 😳 Wish you were a 10-5-er!! 🙁

Holy crap, just read the info on the MMI's. Seriously?? Kinda glad I'm not going the first day!

what resources are you looking at? Apparently the MMIs started at McMaster in Canada. Seems very difficult to prepare for...but I'm pretty sure this will start to be adopted by many schools.

😡 i know. i got my II when i was walking into work so i decided to schedule it really quick on my phone before i had to start - went back later and it says you can only reschedule once and via phone call. sooooo i'm kinda stuck 🙄 ah well. very nervous for it, to say the least...

when you get the II they give you a description of how the interview day/format will be

Yeah, I'm a bit puzzled. The only school I know of that uses face-to-face MMI's is Duke. If they're ethical questions I'm golden... But still I have no idea how to prepare for this.

I'm THINKING they're ethical questions, or maybe some type of stressful scenario they give you because the email says there are six 10-minute stations to "read and respond to a case"....so what other kind of case is there then ethical or clinical dilemmas? And then you have a "double station" where you have your interview (by double station does this mean 2 people or you have twice as much time/20 minutes?).

Sounds stressful. I will probably be nervous all the way up until it's over. And then be nervous until I get a decision...

THE CYCLE OF NERVOUSNESS :scared:

No kidding!! I hate this cycle of nervousness!!

I took the "double" to mean two back-to-back case stations followed by a face-to-face... So three sets of that = 90 minutes??

Interview invite too! I am excited but just like all of you (or at least the normal ones) am nervous about the unknowns. Regardless, I wish you all the best on the 5th! I'm scheduling for the 12th.

ahhhh i don't even know. and there's a rest station. i wonder what you do there? sit and stare at the other people? 😕

this is contributing to my nervousness. i should stop posting about these MMIs lol 🙄

I'm glad to be going on the 5th. It will be new for them (MU-COM) as well that first day and I like the idea of that. Also I don't have to read all the neurotic posts on SDN that could potentially increase the anticipation.

I don't really see how going later will make it much better. Guess you can say you will get feedback from other SDN folks, but honestly we wont be allowed to tell you the questions we received and info on what to potentially expect (format wise) is out there already. No one will know what the interviewers are looking for until the acceptances/rejections roll out and even then it would be just speculation...Unless of course the give us our results. They could be looking for the "right" answer to the prompts....could be that the answer you give doesn't matter as long as you put together a reasonable and logical response....could be a combination of both or something completely different altogether. Plus going later, the interviewers have seen many applicants and may have heard some pretty good responses to promts/situations already.😱😉

From what I gathered from the information received, we will do 6 stations MMI format, have a rest station then have a final station that is twice as long (20 minutes?) that will be closer to that of a traditional interview.

The important question is...how do you/is there a way to prepare for this type of interview?

Finally, I recently read an interesting article on MMI style interviews. Here is the link if you are interested:

got placed on hold 🙁 anyone know if there's advisors or someone I could speak to? I mean it's better than a rejection but I'd like to see if there's anything I could do ..

Thanks for posting the info; I'm going on the third interview day, so I'm glad to have some feedback from prior SDNers to know what to expect and how well it's worked out before my turn, and still probably be in the first round to have decisions made.

I'm preparing my reading up on Duke's MMI's just to have an idea of an established program's take on this format. Couldn't hurt.

In the school specific forum for Duke or elsewhere?

This is great information, thanks for sharing! You also made me feel a little better about being on the first day 😀

I'm sorry to hear this 🙁 but it looks like they're already sending out rejections so it's a positive that you were looked upon highly enough to not be outright rejected for sure. I'd just email them and ask that question and see if there's anything you can this year to enhance your chances of getting an II/gaining admission. Good luck! 👍

same thing happened to me tonight. did they give you a reason why? in the email that they sent me, it said my gpa was less than what they consider competitive for an automatic interview invite but everything else was strong so they said to send my current fall semester grades upon completion

To research the MMI, I started to look at research papers that I either found on PubMed or on Google Scholar. Below is a link to one of the papers that I found. It was published in 2004 and is specific to the health sciences programmes. Use this paper and the listed references to get going!

I hope this helps! 😎

yours seems a bit more specific than mine. My email stated I was overall slightly less competitive. Sigh 🙁 Im really interested in this school too. Let's see what happens and hope for the best

If you don't mind me asking what were your statistics as well as extra curriculars?
