This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uh oh...did they not prescreen and now we are all going to drop 100 bucks to get rejected anyhow...? They sure made it seem like they screened....

I didn't think I was THAT bad of an applicant! 🙁 geeze!

I was completely kidding.

Several short questions: list/explain research, why MU-COM, what specialty interests you most and why, list shadowing experience, would you want to practice in IN and why. Pretty short.

So there is a bit of an in state bias for people who want to practice in Indiana?

I'd say definitely. I think the major point of starting the school was to increase the number of physicians in the state (correct me if I'm wrong anyone). Hopefully they still love some of us OOS-ers though 😳

is anybody else out of state applying? how are you answering the "are you interested in practicing in indiana?"

Just added Marian to my list of schools. What kind of in state bias do you think they will have?

Probably a lot, unfortunately. I'm hoping they like other Midwest states though 😳

I think that if you can show them why you will want to practice primary care in indiana, then I think they will treat you the same as a in state student. Like if you shadowed a dr in indiana or something like that.

On the secondary when it asks about shadowing and mentions including name and location of hospital. What did you put for location? Address? City?.....How specific where you beyond the name of the hospital and city?

I just put city and state.

No problemo Kenobi 😉

Has anyone been notified that they're complete here yet?

Just got an email saying ill be reviewed for secondaries and in the meantime work on my letters of rec and supplemental material. submitted primary about 5 days ago. good luck everyone.

So this morning I shadowed a Family Med DO in Indianapolis, who is the head of the FM residency program at IU. She is actually in meetings with Marian to get DO students into the IU 3rd and 4th year rotations and later residencies. Sounds pretty promising, especially if other specialties follow suit!

Great news! Marian is even closer than OU to me right now so I would love to keep it at the top of my list.

I know it is early and Marian just sent the first batch of secondaries out in the last couple weeks, but I was wondering if anyone had heard from them regarding timeframe for deciding on interviews?

Any idea about how competitive this school is going to be as far as GPA and MCAT scores. I looked at their website and found this on their requirements for admission page:
To be considered a competitive applicant, candidates should have achieved at least a 3.20 science and cumulative grade point average, on a 4.00 scale.
A competitive MCAT score usually begins at 24; however the MCAT is weighed in connection with GPA and personal qualities

But then on their FAQ page it says this:
Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.
However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical school reveals an overall mean GPA of 3.48. For this group, the mean GPA in science is 3.36 and non-science 3.58. We anticipate similar numbers for our entering class in 2013. If your GPA is below 3.3, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive.

However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical schools reports a mean Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score of 26.51, calculated from a total of 8.66 verbal, 9.33 biological science, and 8.52 physical science. If your MCAT score is below 25, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive.

What the poop?

Basically, they're anticipating their first year's class at being right around the average. Since IU has to reject so many qualified applicants each year, my bet is they are betting on getting a lot of those students, which should make their MCAT/GPAs pretty high. That could just be wishful thinking on their part. My guess is, they just wanted a general answer since they don't have any actual data to go off of yet.

Right I'm just super confused why they have 2 completely different MCAT/GPA estimations.

Does IU reject a lot of in state people?

On 8/6 I emailed Kelly to verfiy receipt of my LORs and she wrote me this:
"We are in the process of uploading Letters of Recommendation to our new Enrollment Management site which should be up and running later this week."

Haven't heard anything since so hopefully when they get all our application materials loaded properly the ii's will start pouring out.

Thanks for the info! I've been wondering if they got my letters yet 🙂

I got the error message when I clicked the link in the email. After I C/P'd, it worked just fine. Strange.

If you click the link in the e-mail for the portal, it has a (.) after the .edu

If you delete that last period and click enter, it will take you to the site. At least that worked for me!
