For anyone offered interview recently, what were the earliest dates open to schedule one?

Has anyone been able to access the updated portal for admitted students yet? Excited to check it out, but maybe it's too early on Wednesday 😀
Mine is still the same as before. Maybe before the end of business hours??
So I checked again and I saw tabs that said "Congratulations!" and another one, but both gave me a 404 error; now those aren't even showing up. So hopefully the portal will be updated soon.
Agreed! Same issue! Ah...I just want to see what new information they might have for us! Maybe I'm a little OCD, but I definitely have started looking into rent prices in the 'safer' neighborhoods around Marian. I just need to know how much I need to save!!
you guys see a congratulations tab!?! i dont see it 🙁

Important Updates:
- Portal has been updated for current admits.
- Portal will update early next week (maybe sooner) for wait list.
- Regarding housing, we will be in touch soon to share information about on- and off-campus living options. More information will be available at Admitted Student Program in March.
MU-COM Admissions
In your folder they gave you there was a card that says save the date...I am assuming this is what they are referring to. It says on itI have looked on the website and I don't remember hearing about that at my interview. Does anyone know when the Admitted Student Program will be (in March)? And what it will be?

"Accepted Student Open House
Saturday
March 9, 2013

then on the back it says:
"Join the MU-COM facult, staff and administration for a day of in-dept information and camaraderie.
The program will include a curriculum review, class lecture and case stude, financial aid information, campus and Michael A Evans Center for Health Sciences tours, student life information and much more."
Finally it mentions that you'll be notified with ways to register via Email through AMP.

Hey Dr. Meows and others,
So I was bored today (not working, due to a concussion and post-concussive syndrome I can't go back to work until at least next week 🙁) and I started looking at how much I would need to borrow if I decided to live on my own, which I expect I will. It isn't that I wouldn't want a roommate, but I have 3 playful kitties and they need space to run around without being cooped up in a single bedroom with a closed door. This, combined with the piece of mind coming from having your own space to lounge about and study in, makes me inclined to look at single, one-bedroom places.
For the living situations, I looked at the Google map from the Facebook accepted page, and there was a nice person who created a Google map of safe living areas in the Indy area. The place I have somewhat decided on is called the Center Point Apartment Homes. I know that $900 sounds like a TON compared to being able to get a room for $400-$500 with a roommate, but these places are less than 5 miles from campus, are in a nice area (upscale so I would think safer), have a garage (rust-free car!! 😀 ), and a washer/dryer inside the apt (BIG difference compared to running to the Laundromat with all of my books and studying while trying to keep track of my clothes).
I have a few other places that I was looking at, all with the possibility of garage and/or washer dryer. I just feel like these are creature comforts, and for my parents concern, worthwhile to have if possible. I also personally don't want to be across the street from campus with the regular students, since I don't necessarily want to be listening to people having a party for EVERY game of EVERY sport. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy a good party, just not the evening before an exam!
Further, I looked at loans and costs of repayment. This is the website I was using to calculate the amount needed to borrow. It's through Citibank and is intended to tell you if you'll need a private loan on top of any government ones, but it is still a great tool for adding in all of the extra costs such as insurance, food, rent, and books/supplies.
https://www.studentloan.com/loancalculator/index.htm
When I calculated my estimated rent for a one bedroom, my total with tuition and fees came out to almost $230,000 for 4 years. Mind you that I am single, unmarried, and have no one to pay my expenses for me (call me stubborn, but I like it better that way!) Further, I was using the data from the University of Colorado at Denver, since they have a recent breakdown of fees, tuition, books/supplies, travel expenses, and living expenses. I know that Marian has a different tuition and I doubt that the insurance will be this expensive as on the page http://www.ucdenver.edu/student-ser...ost/Pages/2012-13-School-of-Medicine-COA.aspx but nonetheless on the Citibank page I just substituted what our tuition was and I estimated $900 in rent per month, for 12 months, for 4 years.
I would MUCH rather over-estimate than under-estimate!
Anyway, I was just checking Rent.com. I know there will be cheaper and probably better alternatives, but for me in California, this is as close as I can get to scoping the locations out before I come out again in March for the accepted student days.
Hope this helps!!

Dont forget the interest. What loans does Marian have available to students?
It looks like so far, Marian is just offering us the Direct Loan Federsal Unsubsidized/Subsidized Loan Program, and the Graduate PLUS Loan Programs. At this point, the research I did showed an average interest rate thru these services of roughly 7.3%.
Unfortunately for us, we will ONLY be eligible for Subsidized Loans, not the Unsubsidized Loans, and that may bump the interest rate from 6.8% to whatever they want (shouldn't be much higher though because it will usually be lower than getting a rate from a private lender). It said in the email for those of us accepted that there is the DL Federal Stafford Loan program, and that the max we can borrow per year is $42,722. The PLUS loan is the one that is supposed to be able to cover the rest of our expenses, and that loan rate is 7.9% 🙁 So, if I am calculating $230,000 then I will need $160,000 in DL FSL and $70,000 at the higher interest rate with the PLUS loan.
I currently do not know of any lower interest options, but then again it's only October, and maybe they will have more information for us in March
The moral of the story is, literally only borrow what you need. Live inexpensively if possible and don't purchase lavish things, since the money you DON'T have will come back to bite you in the butt!
Better to be informed about our debt before you see the bill!
So, is it reasonable to assume that costs for everything for 4 years would run about 60k. 60K x 4= 240K. For maths sake, lets just assume that the average interest would be 7.3% (half of loans at 6.9, halfish at 7.9%), with PLUS loans and unsubsidized. Each year, 7.3% of 60K= 4.3K a year in interest X 4 years (simplifying it as best I can)= roughly 18K-20K depending on rounding nicely or not. So 260K in loans just for 4 years of medical school.
Now, it is totally possible to chip away at the debt while in residency, but u gotta eat, live somewhere, preferably drive somewhere, and if you have kids or not. So lets say u pay nothing during residency. so 7.3ish% of 260K = roughly 1.9K. Which 1.9K over 3 years minimum is roughly 6K (again, very rough). So by the time you make any attending salary money, you have about 270K in debt, accruing interest every year. How do you pay that off as a PCP making 150K?
lets say I gross 200K as a FM doc and after taxes and overhead and malpractice I take home 120K a year. It seems like the best way to pay off the debt is to live off of 20K a year for 3-4 years and then start enjoying the 6 figs.
Dude, debt sucks, and I had a scolarship for undergradcant imagine what it is like for people who have loans b4 med school
No kidding! I was thinking about the same, for an EM Doc just out in Indy the starting is about 220K, so take home maybe 165K and I figure I would try to pay off about 75K per year and live off of the rest while hopefully finding a place to live and maybe having a family. Not until after residency though in my case! 😛
P.S I have about 20K in undergraduate loans that I will pay off ASAP before I pay anything else, since those have higher rates (I think)
If you work for a non-profit for 10 years (which does include residency) while making IBR payments, the rest of your loans are forgiven. I'm hoping to return to Indy for residency and thereafter (if I have to go away for school), and most of the hospitals around here qualify for that program. No need to worry so much about it right now. Borrow just what you need and not any more than you have to, and you'll be fine.
those accepted already..around what time did you receive your calls. just so I know when I can start freaking out officially.

who here understands exactly what the curriculum is supposed to be like. I know they are taking a case based approach for learning and early clinical exposure. which I still do not know what that means. How early is early. Like DCOM has students doing standardized patients in the first semester...now that's early. but they really did not outline a schedule for what a typical class day would be like for students. And for the clinical years, I understand that they want to breed indiana doctors but how much flexibility is there to pursue sites outside of indiana and in other places in the country.
anyone from 11/3 interview got accepted??
