Harvard is probably the worst deal in grad endo. $100k a year, 3 year program in a saturated city with 2 other endo programs. Very little significant endo research comes out of HSDM, and their faculty are basically all adjunct. Honestly, any 3 year endo program is a bad deal.

Einstein is a unicorn program since it's hospital based. They have all the toys. But there are other programs that have GW and lasers, too. I do think it's weird they're so big on bony lid EMS. Just not that practical IMO.

Yeah Einstein is probably the best program period these days. Looking back most people I interviewed there with got in somewhere eventually. Like you said amazing faculty, equipment, reputation, and stipend vs tuition. Just not many hospital based programs any more. Next best is probably a military program while you get officer pay and benefits but that obviously has extra sacrifices built in.

I always found it unusual that the best endo programs pay you instead of charge you, and the “worst” programs cost over $100k/y. That being said even an expensive program with lots of residents is still super competitive to get into and leads to a great career.

I would be hard-pressed to say military programs are better than most civilian programs. Sure you get paid more as a resident, but that’s about it. Most of them do significantly less cases and don’t have a wide range of variety as the typical pt is 18-40 yr old and healthy. Never able to follow up either to to constant moving every few years.

Most people that interview at programs that interview early end up somewhere, programs just end up vying for the same pool of top candidates.
My first interview was like early July and I connected with 6-7 other candidates there, I kept seeing them here and there at other interviews and all of us eventually got in somewhere that cycle (one of them got into Einstein lol).

True. Quality of education is also variable with how often they change program directors. And yes having younger patients leads to easier cases generally. That being said the low debt and higher stipend/salary is still pretty significant, at least early in your career.

Not sure you can say it’s the best “period.” There is a tier of programs that stand above the rest in terms of quality of instruction, procedure volume, cost of attendance, and location for sure. For someone who really loves research and faculty prestige, San Antonio would be more desirable than Einstein. If you want the cheapest route with quality clinical education, then it’s hard to beat Augusta. There’s probably a group of 5-6 programs I’d put in Tier 1 then it drops off after that.

You can become an incredible, board-certified endodontist from any program. At the end of the day, it’s about the individual. But cost/opportunity cost is a fixed variable.

There’s no good way to answer that question, really. As I previously mentioned, Harvard is probably the worst from a cost and opportunity cost standpoint. It just doesn’t have anything going for it other than the name and Boston is a fun (expensive) place to live. Otherwise, Baylor and MUSC have had severe administrative and faculty issues in recent years. But I know graduates from all three programs who are doing just fine. Debt is their major concern, not clinical ability.

Is there any verification that A&M sent out invites? They sent out emails about apps being complete as of Thursday, but we're there invites as well?

UncleJoesVeneers has lots of good points.

I would say, diplomatically, a few names come to mind but even they have some great alumni and really there’s only ~50 programs. They are all decent and capable of helping you become a competent endodontist. Cost is one of the only objective measures so cheap 2 year > expensive 2 year> 3 year. Generally smaller class size will have more mentorship than large classes.

All of the subjective qualities of a program are hard to assess unless you interview there, went to dental school there, or know a current resident. Stuff like do the faculty get along, faculty turnover rates, is the program director someone you would get along with? Do they treat their residents like colleagues or like dental students? What is the main philosophy and goal of the program (research and regen like San Antonio, surgery like Penn… boards prep, clinically heavy vs light, traditional VS minimally invasive, etc.)? Where is the program geographically (close to family, relocating family, do you like rural/urban/coastal, etc.)?

All these things make a bigger impact on your residency experience than school name, but the way applications work very few people get into more than one program and have a choice. Most patients will ask where you went to dental school not your residency anyway. The best program is the one that accepts you, especially because they wouldn’t have picked you unless you seem like a good fit for who and what they have to offer.

As with everything else, there are definitely exceptions with this on both ends - stipended programs that are trash (yes, they exist) and very expensive programs that are incredible. But I agree - even the expensive programs lead to a rewarding career - you're going to be learning endo your whole life anyway. The best program is the one you get into.

  • You copy-paste the most recent list into the reply text box.
  • Bold the school that has sent out the invite.
  • Add the mode by which the interview was sent and the interview date.

    It isn't that difficult and barely takes any time at all. It's definitely way easier than anything you'll do in endo residency! 😆​

This is true. UNC is a 3 year program. The residents have no guidance since all of the faculty left. The environment is incredibly toxic amongst the residents and PD. I have been warned by many, but I advise you to visit yourself and ask around.
 
It’s hard to! I have 10% chance at any of the schools left. I knew I shouldn’t even bother applying since I failed NBDE 2 once. I was hoping my experiences after graduating would help me…guess Endo is the new Ortho now.
