Rowan University (RowanSOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just had my interview. it was pretty laidback and the interviewers (1 DO, 1 4th year) were really chill and friendly. Idk if it was open or closed file.... AACOM says its closed, but previous SDN threads said it was open. Who knows...but all they cared about was my social skills. They just asked me about my job, hobbies and experience with OMM. Great school!! 👍

I saw a whole bunch of you getting a tour from the 2nd years. You guys and girl looked sharp. 👍

Hi,

I recently got an interview invite for RowanSOM. I was wondering does anyone have ideas about cheap traveling options from Orlando, FL to Stratford, NJ; and if going by plane, which airport is closest to Stratford? I would like to attend the tour prior to my interview, so I want a traveling option that will allow for that. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks : )

I am actually going to tour the campus soon too. I am currently pre-II so I am just going to get a feel for the campus. Are you planning on flying out both times though? Sounds like that could be a little expensive given the high cost of this entire process. Most interviews include some sort or tour so if thats something you want then I would hold off. But if you are doing it to get a feel for the campus prior to interview day to relieve some stress then I suppose you could do it. Only if you have money lying around for this though.

I think the Philly airport is the closest but I have never used it.

Congratulations by the way! Good luck in that interview!!!

I would go with Philly. I would suggest getting here a day earlier so you can get a good night's rest before you go in in the morning. Stay away from Camden hotels, you could stay in Philly, walk to a PATCO train which will bring you to Lindenwold and bring you really close to the school. It's literally a 8-10 min walk from there. The PATCO is about $7. Otherwise you could probably get a taxi to Voorhees or somewhere in Cherry Hill. In the morning take a taxi from Cherry Hill to Stratford.

Those are some general suggestions, I'd suggest you do some more research on which hotels but that's a ball park.

Good luck!

Hey thanx for the feedback. According to what the admissions people said, the tour would be from about 12-1 and the interview would be afterwards. So I'm trying to come the day before, get a feel for the place and rest. I would be leaving after my interview and headed back to Florida.

Awesome! Thank you. I wasn't too sure about what airport to land in, there is so many in NJ. I just need to figure out the timing and I'll be good : )

Some people got complete emails whereas some didn't? Is it best to call anyway?

There are hotels in Deptford, NJ about 15 minutes away if you wanted to look into that. Good luck! I just submitted and I am hoping for a secondary!

Yes, if you have not received the email then just call.

I was just here for a tour and stopped by admissions to ask about not getting a complete email and they were really nice about it. They also said to just give them a a call anytime I want to check in. So unless you just mailed it a few days ago I would go for it.

Very excited 😀

They are used to getting calls from anxious applicants. And this is coming from first-hand experience 😳

did anyone else interview 8/20 or before ...i'm wondering if they heard back from their interview. getting anxious :scared:

Hey I interviewed 8/23. I haven't heard anything back yet either! Do you know when they will be notifying us? In years past, I believe the committee met the 3rd Thursday of every month and acceptance calls only were given out that Friday. I am not sure if that will the same protocol this year given the addition of the Early Decision Program.

This is beyond doubt my top choice! I really really hope I get accepted here!

The first time this cycle the committee is going to be meeting (regarding FINAL decisions) is Friday September 20th, so whether you interviewed in August or on September 19th, all of us will be evaluated on the 20th, and that is the day that the acceptance calls will be made.

Following this first meeting, the committee meets (regarding final decisions!!!, not interview decisions) every third friday of the month.

Gluck everybody :luck: , these are the perks of being the early applicant.

any other news on interview invites? Tryna stay home in NJ, this is my #1 choice.

I am an OOS 27MCAT 3.78 GPA... lot of research experience URM Should I apply?

I'd go for it! Average MCAT is 28 and GPA is in the 3.6's. Id have to look up how they view OOS, but your in a good range!!

Thanks for the information!

I am already so anxious! Hope to hear good news on the 20th!!

Just got the interview invite phonecall! Apparently there were a few cancellations so I am interviewing the day after tomorrow and I am NERVOUS. First med school interview ever and it happens to be my first choice school. AH

Just to clarify: I never got a verification email. I did, however, call the school on Friday 9/6 to check in and they verified over the phone that it was complete. 3.82gpa, 27 mcat, in-state URM. Primary was submitted 7/10/13, and secondary was submitted 8/20/13. Wish me luck!

If any of you SOM hopefuls want more exposure to the medical school, then you guys should think about asking the admissions office if you can shadow a medical student for a day.

This is a great opportunity for you guys to observe a day in the life of a medical student and it shows the admissions committee that you are interested in attending.
If any you guys would like to shadow me for day at Rowan-SOM or just want more information then PM me.

Regards

Echoing docqb, arranging a shadow is a really great way to show your interest and put a face to your file. There are plenty of us that would love to show you around. It's a really good way to see if the school is a good fit for you.

Does anyone know if it would make a significant difference between interviewing early october vs interviewing late october in terms of being able to get accepted?

Significant difference, no as they meet once a month to vote (believe its the 4th Friday of the month, Sept's date is Sept 27). So aim for a date before their monthly meeting.

Forth Friday??? I thought it was the third...😕

It's THIS Friday everyone, the 20th.
This is straight from Marisol, you can call to confirm.

Are you guys flying in the morning before and leaving the same day? Or flying in the night before and doing the interview the day after? Because the former is significantly cheaper for me..

I would recommend flying in the night before and doing the interview the day after. This gives you time to settle down so when you get in the interview you don't look like you are flustered. Just a thought

For everyone coming in for an interview, feel free to message me if you have any questions or just want get some info.

For the sake of Marisol's sanity (I don't want a lot of people calling her starting tomorrow), the admissions committee will not be meeting tomorrow. Previously, 9/20/13 was the scheduled date, but it has been changed to a later date and time.

Congrats to those who got ii. When were you guys complete?

Oh man. Thanks for the heads up! Do you know when the later date is?
