I had made my decision to go to Jefferson a month ago, but today I was offered a place at Stony Brook. I really like Jefferson but Stony Brook is half the price (after the first year when I would qualify for instate). I honestly do not know near as much about stony as Jefferson. Any thoughts?

Basically ranked the same (Stony Brook a little higher), so go with the $$. That would save about 60-70,000 I'm guessing.

Some things to consider: Which place had a better feel? Which would you regret more not going to?

I don't know... I got into both Jefferson and SBU last year. Jefferson was my top choice until I got off the WL to another school. Philly beats Long Island by a lot.
Rankings don't mean much. The education at Jefferson's worth it in terms of better clinical rotations and better hospitals.

Some bad things about Stony Brook:

1. You need a car.
2. Despite being in close proximity to NYC, it's still something like 40 minutes away and according to my interviewer there are no rotations (so all rotations are on the island).
3. Living expenses may be more than Philly.
4. Some people consider LIers to be arrogant jerks (not me, I don't have an opinion, but even my interviewer asked if that was going to be a problem).

I know nothing about Jefferson though.

Are you interested in surgical subspecialties? Because if so, then Jefferson might be worth the extra money as they have decent to great departments/residencies in all of the surgical specialties that would help come match time.

Jefferson is one of my top choices for medical school, but in your case, being a NY resident, the much lower tuition of Stony Brook would be irresistable to me.

I would say that SB is, most times of the day, more than 40 minutes from NYC. It is a 1hr20min train ride from Ronkonkoma (which about 10 minutes from SB) and generally closer to a one hour drive. You can do OB and peds at Flushing Hospital, which people generally LOVE. There are also a lot of available rotations at Winthrop University Hospital, in Mineola, which is about a 35-40min train ride to NYC...and the hospital is literally at the LIRR stop.

Based on the question about arrogant jerks, I may be able to guess who your interviewer was. I had never been to LI before my SB interview, and I have found the arrogant jerk thing to be far from the truth. Also, your community it mostly going to consist of the medical school and medical students...

Just my thoughts.

Jefferson has some of the best residency programs and plus in Philly you have many medical schools. Just a great overall experience.
