OMG. After this week it's going to be MAY

I feel like a prisoner doing time staring at the calendar and marking days off🙂 Sad part of all this is that come May 15th, we still may not be able to get off the waitlist. My hope though is that the good folks at Upstate would be able to give a clearer picture as to our status come D-Day, and the other good folks on this site who are not interested in Upstate would be sympathetic to our vigil and withdraw by then. That said, let's keep our hopes up and share the good vibes--I hope we all get in!

I could not agree more, PAGuyana!!!!!👍

This waiting and hoping (but not knowing) is torture. And every time I think that May 15th may only mark the BEGINNING of this wait, I get even more anxious/depressed. 🙁

However, I am hopeful that the people who have been accepted to Upstate and have decided not to attend will withdraw as soon as possible!!! (Please, I beg you!)😉

At least I am comforted by this thread, knowing that there are others out there in the same boat that are willing to commiserate!🙂

Actually, Fede if u read the link that KaiHa posted a few threads ago, it seems like Upstate's doing the same thing this cycle as in the 2006 cycle (by keeping the WL immobile till 5/15). Don't worry, there might just be as much movement as in 2006 this yr 🙂!

Thanks for the reassurance nancy, I need it!!
As you can tell, this waiting and uncertainty is killing me...😛

I hope we all get in- you guys are awesome!

just out of curiosty,

did everyone choose Binghamton or Syracuse campus? From the WL threads in the previous cycles, it looks like Upstate would start pulling those who choose Bing off the WL first 🙄

I chose Binghampton. I really liked the sound of that program better, with the extra individual attention one gets from attendings, perhaps some more longitudinal patient exposure, etc. I won't lie thought, the thought of moving away from 3/4 of my classmates is a bit unsettling.

I chose Syracuse but at this point I would take Binghamton, too, if that were my only choice!!

I think both programs have their advantages so you can't go wrong either way.

I think that what will happen is the following:

They are going to go, in order, down the ranked waitlist to offer acceptances. If the spot is a Syracuse spot, then the first person on the list will be called, unless that person chose "Binghamton only", in which case the very next person on the list (that chose any of the following: "Syracuse only", "I prefer Syracuse", or "I prefer Binghamton") will be called. The only people who will be skipped on the list will be people who chose "Binghamton only."

Likewise, if the opening is in Binghamton, they will follow the ranked order of the list to call people who marked either "Binghamton only", "Prefer Binghamton", or "Prefer Syracuse." The only people who will be skipped in this case are those who marked "Syracuse only."

They give you the opportunity to accept or decline the spot when they call you (i.e.- you marked "prefer Syracuse" but the spot is in Binghamton...they will let you "decline" Binghamton and stay on the list until the next spot in Syracuse opens up-- in which case, you would be the first in line to receive it.) I have been wondering about the relative risk of doing this, though. It is obviously risky to turn down a spot at Bing if it is later in the summer (after mid-June, I would guess). But how risky is it to decline Bing in May or at the beginning of June in the hopes that a Syracuse spot will eventually come along?

And even if it is likely that you would eventually get offered a spot in Syracuse, is it worth the extra waiting and stress? Especially since you would have to delay making summer plans, moving to Syracuse (if you are not local), etc??

Thoughts?😕

My thought: if they call me and offer me a spot on either campus, I'm going to say "yes for the love of god take me now and make this end yes!"

Seems like a good bunch chose bing first. I went to Binghamton (no P ok? ahem..) so I am very familiar with the area and also like the idea of working one on one with the attending.

Ha, but it's always been my favorite one of the Hamptons!

Upstate fourth-year here. Statistically, waitlisted applicants are more likely to end up at Binghamton if they did not indicate a preference (and that's all it is - if your position on the waitlist is reached, you will be told which campus the position is for). If you marked "only Syracuse" or "only Binghamton", this is a risk. Binghamton is not any less desirable - fewer people want to deal with moving, and that's why waitlisted applicants are more likely to end up there. Note: consider it impossible to change campuses once you are at Upstate. The current MSIIs include married students, and that seems to have no influence. They are going to Binghamton. In my year, a friend was wasitlisted at Upstate and offered Binghamton. Based on his position on the waitlist (please don't ask - they won't tell), he was told that he *might* get a Syracuse spot if he waits (it was late May by this time). He took Binghamton because he badly wanted to come here (rejecting an unconditional offer from his state medical school). He was one of the rare people that managed to switch to the Syracuse campus by MSIII. I hope that helps! Hang in there.

Hey Orange Man, thanks so much for the info.

Do you know- will they let us switch campuses with another classmate, if we both want to switch? So hypothetically, let's say, just because of the luck of the draw with the waitlist, that I want Syracuse but get Binghamton and Funky wants Binghamtom and gets Syracuse. Once Funky and I both begin MSI, if we are in agreement to switch, would they let us?

Just wondering!

You're welcome. It seems like it was yesterday that I was praying for admission to Upstate. Medical school goes by quickly, and it's (for the most part) a lot of fun.

Yes, traditionally, a 'reciprocal switch' (what you described) was mandatory, but I have to be honest and tell you that there were big problems in the last couple of years--even if two mutually agreeable people came forward. My year seems to have had more success than any other year, but I think that's because my year had a few people drop out or decelerate to the five-year curriculum. Those days are gone. Again, we have had married parents (even with kids) split up for the clinical years and I've seen the #1 ranked student fail to secure a Binghamton-->Syracuse transfer. Don't expect one. If you accept a campus, expect it as binding as your down-payment for medical school. There's a minute chance of changing.

On a bright note: it really makes no difference which campus you go to. The board scores are identical at either campus, and both campuses had a strong showing in every medical specialty. We had a couple of Caribbean transfers that ended up at Binghamton, and they matched in neurosurgery and radiation oncology. I would never have chosen Binghamton for a number of reasons but, after experiencing the Upstate clinical years, I'd hesitate if I could do it all again. The Binghamton campus offers much better one-to-one instruction, and it's not as harsh. Either way, Upstate will do you proud.

Uh oh, what do you mean by "harsh"?:scared: (now I'm scared!!)

Sorry for all the questions but-- would you mind telling us, in your opinion, what the specific drawbacks/negatives were for you in going to the Syracuse campus?

THANKS AGAIN for the info Orange Man!!!👍

Perhaps my "harsh" was too harsh. Syracuse is a level-one trauma center. It's busy, and there are tons of residents and fellows. People can be curt. The medical student is the lowest of the low there, but it's no different from any other medical school that has just one campus. Binghamton is more touchy-feely, and I noted that they DEFINITELY start rounding later on several rotations than we do. The ob/gyn rotation at Syracuse (do a search - this has come up several times in the last four years) is HARSH. There's a fair amount of abuse, and several students are given a conditional pass every year for trivial reasons. It is unanimously voted the worst experience by Syracuse students. It's no coincidence that the people going into ob-gyn at Upstate all trained in Binghamton. Does this change your mind about which campus to select? It shouldn't. Medical school is what you make of it. Yes, you need to develop a thick skin, but always keep in mind that there's a reason why it's a four-year program. Confidence comes with graded responsibility. Now...back on track with the thread. 🙂

If only we were so lucky to have that scenario. 😀

Thanks so much for the info, Orange man 👍! I guess I did make the right decision for choosing Bing (taking the "harshness" into account) 😀

Haha. I'm sure Binghamton has their share of peaches, too. Keep in mind this experience is chiefly with the one said department, and it's nothing new to the administration or faculty. I don't want a ripple of fear going around the MSI class that Upstate med students are abused. They aren't. Keep in mind that you are about to enter a VERY heirachical profession, though, so don't say nobody told you your feeling wouldn't get hurt from time to time. 😉

OMG... the wait is killing mee

What could we do to have time go by quicker

OMG... the wait is killing mee

I know I am going out of my mind with this wait too!!!

I wish I could go on vacation...that would entertain me in the meantime, at least!!

Officially withdrew my acceptance (Syracuse spot) today. Good luck to all who are still waiting on this thread, I hope you all get in! You deserve it🙂

Today's count:

12

THANK YOU SO MUCH drumboy!!!😀👍

Yes, I agree with Funky that we need something fun to do to pass the time (besides preparing for round 2!!)

I was hoping they were going to start moving the waitlist now.

I was hoping they were going to start moving the waitlist now.

So was I.

When I spoke with admissions a few months ago, they did not mention to me that the list would not move before May 15th, so I was really hoping that at the beginning of May, the list would begin to move. I know that other people on this thread were told that there would be no movement before the 15th, though...so I guess we just have to wait some more.

I really am with you, Funky, this wait is KILLING me!!! And when I think that the waiting could go way beyond the 15th, I just get depressed and frustrated!!

What's worse is that so far, not that many people have posted here saying that they are withdrawing from Upstate!!:scared: I hope that this changes and we see some more action on here in the next 11 days!!

So here is my official plea to all those out there who have been accepted to Upstate and do not plan to attend:

PLEASE WITHDRAW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, NOW THAT IT IS MAY, SO THAT THE PEOPLE ON THE WAITLIST HAVE A CHANCE OF BEING ACCEPTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE! WE ARE IN AGONY!!!!!!!! (Thanks and good luck wherever you go!:luck:)

Relax!!! You need to take a chill pill. Don't freak out because people on SDN aren't saying they withdrew their acceptance yet. Not all applicants to Upstate post regularly. Not many people posted their acceptance on the acceptance thread so you can't go by how many people withdrew publically on SDN. Plus on the bright side, at least they won't be accepting non-waitlistees anymore since interviews have been over for a while.

Fede,

Look on the bright side, although we have had little postings on people who are dropping Upstate, we've also have a relatively small amount of people who have posted for our mini waitlist--and I'm sure not all on our waitlist would go if given the chance. So in the end I think it balances out just fine. There will be movement and I think we stand a very good shot...just hang in there dude. I feel your pain, and we will get through it. We're all here for each other and I wish you and everyone here the best.

Fede, is this the only WL that u're staying on? If that's the case, I can understand your anxiety. However, I think we all have a good reason to remain optimistic judging from the movement they're having over there at UB. As soon as D-day arrives, I'm sure the movement at Upstate would be phenomenal 😀.
p.s. if you got that same msg from Upstate abt call in if u don't hear anything by June, there's likely a chance that u'd get in before June :luck::luck::luck:

Fede, keep the faith and keep the count going bro'. I honestly look for it at the end of the day.

There seems to be more people on the UB waitlist and a whole lot who got in already. Keep your fingers crossed everyone and hope Upstate has as much or more movement!

Thanks for all the support guys! I really do hope we ALL get in-- you guys are awesome and it would be great to be classmates.

And now for today's count (last day in the double digits!):

10 :luck::luck:
