University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So he only applied to the TMDSAS schools, as such TCOM was his only DO choice...He seems to have the impression that his answer to "Why DO?" was less than satisfactory to the interviewer. Sounds like he got pretty grilled over it.

I did the same thing - applied to only TMDSAS schools. The question came up during my TCOM visit but only in passing as both my med school interviewers were MD's. Anyway the summary of my answer was basically that I couldn't see why not considering my end-goals. This seemed to go over quite well and I believe my interview experience to be overall successful.I think it really depends on who you get matched up with for interviews. I feel I lucked-out in that regard.

Hey everyone!

I received that wonderful phone call just the other day.... and I was invited to interview next week! I have been complete for for quite some time and was really holding my breath! I can't say how excited I am, growing up in the DFW area and knowing how great TCOM is- my #1 choice. Its been asked plenty, but its my first interview despite having been scheduled for a few others already------ advice!??! how has everyones experience been so far??!

Thanks and Best

Congrats! I had a great experience, both my interviews were early morning which I actually felt was beneficial. I would say just don't be nervous,be confident and loose. That's how everyone else at the school is.

What is the consensus on an IS residence who strictly wants DO school and writing a letter of intent that applied late July? MCAT is below avg but everything else should be pretty good. Thanks

Did you have an II, yet?

No I do not, I feel I may have missed her call this morning but her voicemail does not say her name so I left a voicemail

I suppose it's worth a try. I had a DO interviewer and he didn't ask me anything about osteopathic! Yes, I was prepared. 🙂

I'd say that TCOM prides itself on just being a good medical school. A couple of people in my group said that the osteopathic distinction at TCOM is more muted compared to other DO schools, since TCOM sends most of their students to MD residencies. Of course, in the end everyone is a doctor!

I've also interviewed at three other schools (unnamed, sorry), and TCOM remains my top choice. It just feels like a well known, well run, rock solid school with people you want to be friends with.

for all those who got rejection letters how long after your interview was it?

I felt the exact same way after my interview. One of my interviews was with an MD and he asked me the "why DO?" question which was so awkward to answer to an MD but I think it went ok. I wish I wasn't so nervous because I felt like I could have given a more in-depth answer rather than the generic answer I gave. My nerves got the best of me. It was my first interview and I wanted this school so badly that I got all wound up. lol.

I just got an invite!
YAY!!!

Congrats, just be yourself and be confident, my interviews were early morning as well ant everything went smooth.

Thinking about applying to this school next year. I have a comment: This thread doesn't update often like the other schools. How come there are not many "TCOM" people on SDN like in the discussions outside this one thread? Good news is the few mentions of "TCOM" have been very positive...

Prob because we only take 10% out of state so most other sdn posters going do won't apply here while those instate will mostly be applying md. Those who are applying for tcom simply post on our school specific thread, no worries any questions u have can answered here no use bragging about how awesome our school is on the general threads 🙂

+1
Every time I tell someone I risked applying to TCOM they always say that they didn't even bother because they didn't think they had a chance. That 10% out of state acceptance really discourages a lot of people.

you mean discussions about do schools? i think it's because tcom is in tmdsas and separate from the other do schools (different application process & criteria), and tcom people don't have as many issues to talk about.

I love the 10% OOS 👍. Unless i dont get in, then I'll feel even worse

+1 to all before me

I bet It has a lot to do with the instate applicant standards. Texas requires that TCOM (and the other state med schools) have a 90% Texas resident enrollment. That, and the fact that Texas has its own application system, grossly narrows-down the application pool for the entire state. This makes it a less popular (and probably less discussed) school for most OOS applicants. Ostensibly, an inclusive block of 3000-3500 instate students apply to every school we have with exceptions for UTSW and Baylor who have a significantly higher national draw. It stands to reason that most the applicants on this thread are also active in many of the other Texas threads.

That said, TCOM is really set apart from the other DO schools. This application pool is a bit narrower than some but generally more competitive due to the fact that they compete mostly against the 7 other state MD schools in Texas. - again because of the 90% rule. The school itself ranks higher in several fields than many MD schools and most DO schools.Perhaps not coincidentally, most TCOM grads match ACGME residencies.

Finally, most applicants will tell you that their interview experiences revealed to them a friendly and energetic student body. The med students at TCOM are very proud to be there and support a cooperative learning environment. For me it was a great experience and certainly supported my decision to apply there.

Applying should be a no-brainer.

I think TCOM's no grade replacement policy also deters some applicants, both IS and OOS.

As far as participation on SDN, I guess we just don't have much to say. Most TCOM people I know are content and very busy.

"Thank you for your continued in the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. At this time, your application has been placed on the Wait List for Fall 2013 Admission.

Every year we have a few changes in the composition of the class during this time period and we don't expect this year to be different. As applicants withdraw their acceptance for a variety of reasons, we will make additional offers to applicants on the Wait List. Please note that Texas law limits the number of seats available for non-resident applicants. Also, if you are holding a position at another Texas medical school after June 1, we cannot make an offer to you after that date. Please keep our office informed of any address, telephone number or email address changes, or of any other factors affecting your application.

We appreciate your continued interest in becoming a medical student at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Please don't hesitate to call us at lijasd;ofgiaheafe if you have questions.

Sincerely,
Joel A. Daboub, MBA
Assistant Dean for Admissions"

Snail mail today. Postmarked 10/17. Not really how I expected things to get rolling but I guess it's not the worst thing that could happen.

Considering you're out of state, getting on the waitlist at this point is probably not a bad thing. It means they like you and you'd probably be accepted if you were in state. Also, they can only accept about 20-25 OOS students, and I doubt they're going to send off all those acceptances at the beginning. So you may be #15 on the list, they're just waiting till they fill all their instate slots.

Someone (just a friend at school, not TCOM admissions) told me that they like to fill the OOS slots first, pre-November 15. Not sure if that's true or not.

it's hard to tell. it may be true for rejections. a couple of oos friends said it took a while to get an offer from tcom, one got in from the waitlist.

So I saw a few posts about this in the beginning of this thread, but... I really cannot log in to check my TCOM app status. I made a new username and password when I started the DO secondary and now I can't log in. I did get an email confirming that my secondary was submitted, but I never received an email prior giving me a log in, which is why I made my own. Can anyone offer me some insight on this?

They told us at orientation that October 15th they would start offering OOS acceptances and Nov 15th was for in-state acceptances.
I accidentally took October 15th as being some magical release date and I'd have an answer by then but I was sadly mistaken. I interviewed back in August so definitely takes a while.
I hope I hear from them soon. :xf:

Never mind.

I just got my waitlist letter in the mail.

not the worst thing that could happen. if i remember right it takes 600ish offers to fill 200ish spots, so i would assume they go pretty deep into the waitlist

I am really thankful that they even bothered to give me a chance so I'm trying to stay positive. I know it's not the end of the world. I'm still really bummed out because I love this school so much.
I wonder how much the waitlist moves for us out of state people. There are only like 20 seats for us. I'm going to call tomorrow and see how their waitlist works.
I hope you guys have better luck. 👍

Do they reject people without an interview, or is it just like all schools in the sense that no interview means silent rejection?

I think it depends on the school, TCOM sends out letters telling you "we regret to inform you blah blah" also KCUM, I just got a letter telling me that they wont give me an interview, but some other schools will just not tell you anything and you assume that you are rejected since they did not invited you for interview.. just my opinion

For all those who got wait-listed, do not despair they might still call you.

dumb question guys, do you all think you need to put a dismissed speeding ticket on your tmdsas.

I had the same question. My lawyer friend said a dismissed traffic violation is like an acquittal, your offense has been voided. I called TMDSAS, got some woman and she said don't bother. I just ignored it. You can leave it blank or you can list it and nobody will care, really. 🙂

from what i understand if you have ever been pulled over and had your license ran, its on your record and you're pretty much sol for getting into school. I could be wrong though 😉

Anyone's portal still say "your application has been received" and "is complete," and not heard anything from them? I know I asked only like a week ago, but each day seems like forever ago in the waiting process!

I wouldnt bother, they will look if you have a criminal record but even though a traffic violation is in your record it will not come up when you do a background check.

Thanks guys, I couldn't find a solid answer elsewhere.

I'm the same. My understanding is it'll remain like that unless you get an interview.

Yeah, mine's been "Your application is complete" for a month now. Really hope more II's will be sent out, hopefully this week! 😀

I really dont know what answer you expected, sorry to disapoint you but I think all you are going to get is personal opinions and experiences... I had a traffic ticket about 2 1/2 years ago, I called TMDSAS to ask if I should put that in the application and they said: "you should read the application instructions it clearly states to include anything in your criminal record except traffic tickets" so that is why I told you not to bother putting it in your app.

I think that is prety clear but I hope you get the answer you expect later on,

Good Luck

I think what he meant was that he liked the answers you all gave because he couldn't find a solid answer before asking on SDN...

I thought you were saying you did not find the answer you were expecting, like we were being vague..

My APOLOGIES
