University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

So my application has been marked as "received" and "complete" since Sept 2. I spoke with Candace and she says that means I have not been reviewed yet. Is anyone else in the same boat as me? Is this a silent rejection?

C'mon, TCOM, show me some looooooove.

It hasn't been reviewed yet isn't a rejection. Although I'm sorry that you've had to wait so long. Stats/experience with osteopathic medicine?

Just keep swimmin' ~

Yep in the same boat, but i've been in since may.

IS 3.2c/3.0s/30 with solid research and ECs, but have not shadowed a DO. I know it's a bit of a long shot given my stats, but I would rather they just make a decision (in my favor or not). womp womp. In any case, thanks for the perspective, Starry 🙂

Damn, man, sorry to hear that. Have you sent a letter of intent or something else to demonstrate your interest in TCOM?

nope. I am really interested in TCOM, but I've already been accepted to KCUMB and DMU. If I don't receive an interview here I will be attending DMU

I hope so! Does the status change specifically though if one is rejected?

Last year the consensus was that if your application status says "Your application has been reviewed," that means you were rejected. Keep your head up! Last year my application was "Under Review" after interviewing in October until May when I was put on the waitlist. I was accepted on June 13th. I think as long as your application status says "under review" your still in the game.

Did you write a letter of intent to get the interview

My status doesn't even say under review. It just says complete and that my materials have been received. I guess they haven't gotten to my file yet..

Same here. Although I have been complete since early July so it's hard to beleive that they haven't taken a look at my file yet...

I do believe that they have looked at our files. It doesn't make sense that someone who was complete in September would get an interview in 2 weeks vs someone like me who has been complete since July and hasn't heard anything. I tend to think they put ppl in a pile to reconsider at a later date or a pile for rejection.

I guess I should clarify that this applies to application status post-interview. I'm not sure if it applies to applicants who get rejected without receiving an interview. I do seem to remember my status saying "Under Review" before receiving an interview invite.

I do know that TCOM interviews at least as late as January, so try not to be too discouraged if you haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks for clarifying. And you're right, there is definitely reason to not give up. I heard nada from July to October followed by two interviews within a few weeks.

I am still hoping for an II. Had everything submitted by mid-August, but still nothing. Stats, c3.56, s3.34, mcat 28. Have seen lots of previous posts that have gotten II's with this and less. Still hoping for the status change...

I have an interview here next Thursday!!!!!! Any advice????

Are you OOS? You never know, don't give up yet.
No. In state. Last year at this time, people were still getting invites right about now, but who knows? Thanks for the encouragement!

I interviewed at TCOM last week, so yesssss, they're still interviewing. This is an awesome school. The staff was very nice. We ran into an upper class student and were able to ask some questions about rotations which were pretty amazing. I hope to hear from them again.

Uhhhh they kinda suck.. 🙁
cGPA 3.45
sGPA 3.35
MCAT28-30
Unique story and background though.....
Hey you got an II! No need to fear! Good luck! 🙂
Be sure to review that unique story and background in case they ask about it!

I think this might be true. I submitted my secondary mid-October and received an II a few days later. High GPA, average MCAT. Unique story, good ECs and solid osteopathic medicine related secondary answers here as well.

Does anyone know if TCOM does a second look weekend in the Spring?

I have an interview here next Thursday!!!!!! Any advice????

Me too! Are you driving in the day before? I'm coming from San Antonio and will arrive sometime in the afternoon on Wednesday. Do you or does anyone else know which hotels are recommended near the school?

Nope. I'm staying with a family friend in Dallas as of right now lol. I think the website for the school only recommended one hotel and it was 89 bucks

Anyone know if they are receptive to significant others coming?

They don't call it second look, but the activities are similar with free meals and bus tours. There are actually two dates. The first one is for TCOM only, and if you miss it, you can go to the next one which is for all professional students.

I didn't see anyone bring their SO with them when I interviewed. I doubt anyone would object to their presence.

I'll just let her lurk around. Lol

The library would be a fine place for her to hang out. There is a cafe, as well. I walked through it alone without the need for presenting anything. Also, there may be times between your interviews were you simply linger. I'm sure you could do that in the admissions office like most people, or in the library and no one will sound the alarms.

She could also go to the museums across the street. I think that's what many parents do if they drive with the students.

Thanks guys

Congrats. What are your statistics?

Gpa 3.8 mcat 25 , did 2 research projects, volunteering at hospital and about 1000 community service hrs.

I spoke with Caroline today and she said that there are set interview dates all the way up until the end of January. So there is still hope!!

I'm here on Thursday! Still nervous and don't feel prepared aghhh :arghh: Lol

I am curious if they are going to lump me (previous MedSci) with the other MedScis this year for December...if that is the case, they usually shift us onto the waitlist, and that is the worst thing in the world (was on it a few months ago, and all I did was wait for nothing...turns out it was a very slow movement year)

I'm also interviewing on Nov 20th and haven't received the email, I was called yesterday. Anxious to know whether my interview will be in the morning or in the afternoon.

I emailed and she said not yet. For the interview, inst it an all day event?

Yes. However, some had 8am interviews and some had 1:30 interviews.

Ah thx for the head up. Btw, is there a thread (link) to prepare for the questions they gonna ask for the interview?

Indeed. I am on my mobile or I would link you. You are looking for articles & interviews -> interview feedback (under medical) I believe it defaults as allo so change the drop box to osteo and choose unthsc

The major points of interest they had for me was my familiarity with osteopathic medicine and why I choose to pursue it (both) asking what I thought about Dr. AT Still (one) and asking some insight into the ACA and what impact it may have on my career (both), an ethical question (one), and who I would seek to form a health care team for a specific diagnosis (one)

What is the acceptance rate for those that interviewed? I was looking at the waitlist thread last year and it seems that most are from medsci. Do they prioritize medsci apps when picking off the waitlist?

520/829 for Fall 2012

465/845 for Fall 2013

Thanks!

Also I will be interviewing in mid November. Does anyone have an idea if I might hear back in time for match on December or will I most likely not find out until February?

Is it too early to send a letter of intent or is that typically sent out if you're put on the waitlist in February?
