University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really liked the way exams were spread out and staggered. Everything was cumulative, but it was a more student-friendly system. As far as class rank, I'd say that most people in my class paid little attention to it, knowing that the score grouping was fairly tight on most exams and oftentimes the difference between an A and a B was due to serendipity as much as amazing 2nd/3rd-order reasoning. Of course, it helps to be in the top 10% when you're applying for residencies, assuming good board scores and rotation evals - but heck, people in the bottom 10% of my class are in residencies and will be pretty good doctors.

Starry,

When did you have your application complete (mcat, letters and all)?

Primary (8/26/13)
Secondary (9/10/13)

MCAT was complete way back in May. I assume my letters were complete with my secondary. I'm pleasantly surprised by the fast turnaround time. 👍

Hey all, I got a call and decided to drive up for an interview couple of weeks ago. Everything went well I think. Questions were not as hard as I had feared. Interviewers were one clinician and one researcher from the grad school. Very, very pleasant, friendly people (by the way, awesome staff, even the cops were nice). Most of what we talked about was kinda technical and fun - about my research which I mentioned, and about some interesting cases they saw. We did talk a little - as in very briefly - about Obamacare, lack of primary care physicians in Texas, consolidation of health systems, overuse of unnecessary procedures, patient lifestyle/background as part of big picture for cost control etc. I just said a few sentences to show what I knew. The only direct question pertaining to TCOM was why I thought I wanted to be in Fort Worth for 4 years. Then we ended up talking about downtown Fort Worth, which was visible from campus, the museums, recreational/professional sport venues. Overall, it was a very casual interview. It felt more like a job interview where they want to see how you are close up as a person and coworker. The interviewers said they didn't have my grades and scores, so they couldn't discuss my academic record.

Bottom Line: Everything I saw at TCOM justified their reputation as a rock solid and well liked med school. Great school. Great location.

Stats or it didn't happen.

Does anyone know the final application deadline for this school?

Thanks in advance.

Just wondering if I still have a chance here as an OOS. I just got my MCAT retake score back of 30, and with a ~3.6 gpa I'm really hoping for some love here despite the few OOS accepted.

I submitted my secondary app in june, still waiting... show me some love Tcom. instate c3.94, s3.88 and mcat 27.

Right there with you, coolaid. Completed app back in June, 27 (9/9/9), 3.6c, 3.4s, nontrad with almost 10 years healthcare employment experience. Hard not to be deflated in my excitement for this process right now...

I'm with you guys. 3.8c 3.7s 27 mcat and not a peep. It's seems at least from sdn that the invites have been given to people with 30+ Mcat. Which is strange to me because that's not going to be the bulk of their student population.

Got a call from Caroline on Monday, September 23 and I'm scheduled for an interview on October 15th! First interview at 8:15 and second interview at 9.

In-state, cGPA-3.6, sGPA-3.5, 27

Completed my secondary on September 10th.

Does anyone know whether TCOM even consider the Lizzy score for the admissions process ?

Also, does anyone know about the Lizzy score for TCOM ? is it 63 or so for being competitive ?

All I know is their class of 2017 entering statistics are 3.59 cGPA, 3.51 sGPA, and 28 MCAT.

But, seems like the selection process is "highly" dependent on MCAT score than anything else !

Pure speculation on your end. In my humble opinion, TCOM doesn't weigh the MCAT as heavily as you seem to think. I'm sure that they would say that they view every candidate holistically. In the end, their entering class statistics are the only reliable pieces of data that we can consider here. In that case, a 63 or so would definitely be competitive when compared to those scores.

True that. I interviewed there a few weeks ago and at orientation the administrator spent an entire slide showing how MCAT, board scores, and class ranking are NOT correlated. Apparently their top 5 students (both ranking and board scores) had an average MCAT of 27. TCOM wants compassionate and dedicated students. GPA and MCAT only say so much.

Second cycle, first ever interview invite!

A little over 3.5c, 3.3ish science, squeaked out a 30 on my MCAT retake! Secondary was submitted early July, MCAT score transmitted first week of September

What date is your interview? I'm interviewing on October 15th

I live in a little town north of TCOM called saginaw. You might be able to find a hotel here or perhaps try one of the other small suburbs assuming you're renting a car. Feel free to pm me if you need help
im from sag also! where did you go to high school

Is anyone interviewing this Thursday? I'm so excited!

Only one week until those of us who are OOS start to hear back! 🙂

I called today to inquire about the status of my application and they still said there hasn't been a decision. I submitted back in May, so pretty sure it's a silent rejection. Just wish they would not hold out on applicants like this.

I'm wondering if tcom interviews the lower mcats later. Because most of the people I know who go to tcom had mcats that range 21-28 and gpas that varied. And it seems from here at least that no one below a 27 has interviewed. Idk I'm really disappointed that I haven't received an interview yet. I felt that with a 3.8 and 27 I would get at least an interview...

Don't lose hope just yet. I am in the same boat as you submitting back in May. I personally know someone that submitted in May with a low mcat score and was not interviewed until early December and was accepted.

That would be amazing!

Just attended interview today. The interviewee group was small, only 13 people. I was very impressed with all aspects of the school. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Few things.
-Lol at the dude bummed about curve.
-TCOM considers every aspect of an applicant.
-MCAT has nothing to do with Board or success, TCOM proves that every year, can't say the same for other schools.
-Yes it seems the higher MCAT get earlier II; keep on keeping on

So, missed a call from Caroline today. I was working and couldn't answer the "unknown caller" at the time. I checked myHSC and it said I've been invited for an interview!

My stats (more on my profile)
cGPA 3.94
sGPA 3.88
MCAT 26 PS-7 VR-8 BS-8

I submitted my incomplete app in July, TCOM got it 8/7, took MCAT 8/16, submitted secondary 9/30.

I'm pretty excited but a little bummed that I have to wait unitl Monday for another call from Caroline. Good luck, everyone!

Your mcat adds up to a 23?

Aww crap, that was an old MCAT that did sadly add up to 23.

My last score was a little better at PS-8 VR-9 BS-9

Thanks for looking out! lol

No, sorry, I wish I could report that. I really struggled with my choice not to apply last year because of my 23 MCAT. I was so set on it. Instead, I finished my last year of undergrad and applied/was accepted to graduate school in public health. I'm really glad I took the year because this degree is totally applicable to medicine. Fortunately, I improved my MCAT somewhat and I feel like I'm a little more competitive even though I'm almost the same exact person. I know you're still waiting for you II and I wish you the best of luck!!! There's still plenty of time!

Thanks I wish you the best of luck as well. I have a 26 (7V10P9B), so hopefully they pick me out of the lineup soon. I was accepted to DMU, so if TCOM doesn't come calling I'll be hauling my ass to Des Moines.

Thanks 🙂 This will be my first interview. And how wonderful to already have an acceptance!! Congrats!

Someone asked me to recommend a non-fast food place off campus and I wanted to share it with you all. There is a cheap and very good buffet restaurant inside the Kimbell Museum right across the street. Both admission and parking are free.

Yogi's (bagels)
Fred's Texas Cafe (burger)
Rodeo Goat (burger)

Those are excellent places as well. Fred's and rodeo goat are just a couple blocks away as well. Fred's is probably one of the best burger joints I have ever been to but the service usually leaves something lacking.

I'm from Michigan, but I'd love to go here (more than MSUCOM anyway, if I got into both...it would cost the same). My cousin and her family, whom my family is super close to, lives in nearby Irving; I'd love being able to visit them on the weekends. As much as I love Ann Arbor, it would nice to escape to better weather.

Is it worth even applying as an OOS non-resident? Also do any of you know if TCOM offers financial assistance to non-residents?

It's too late to apply this cycle since the TMDSAS primary closed already. But if you are interested in next cycle then be warned that it's pretty darn hard to get in since only 10% of the class can be OOS. Definitely not impossible however. I also don't know if TCOM offers financial assistance but 1) it's already one of the cheapest DO schools and 2) there are ways for you to get in-state residency/tuition by the 2nd year of school.

I'm not applying till next cycle anyway. So to apply I have to go through TMDSAS even if I'm OOS? I'll look into it then.

Dang...I mean, the cost is a major factor of why I want to apply, as well as location and it being a strong program (and public school).

I love to have in-state residency by 2nd year, that would be amazing.
