Is it usual for the admissions office to tell wait listed applicants not to send anything in? It seems like in previous years wait listed applicants who eventually got in sent letters to the admissions office...did they do this against the wishes of the adcom or did the adcom say something different then?

I don't think anyone ever bothered to ask before.

Misohornay, I just want to affirm what you've heard from the office - I called once as well and specifically asked what the office's stance is on getting letters from waitlistees. The person that answered the phone told me that they prefer to NOT get LoIs and update letters (which surprised me). I suppose all we can do is wait, really.

I didn't actually call, I just saw someone who called post earlier saying that the person told them not to send anything. It seems like all the current students posting on this thread sent something in (if i am not mistaken). Any current students care to comment?

It looks like from past years just from browsing the SDN forums, the waitlist moves very very little... like 1 or 2 people get off of it. Do any of the current med students reading this have any idea what the actual movement is and if it is actually that small? Thanks!

In regards to sending LOIs and such in, diosa and I both did and I know other students who did (and many who did not). I really don't see how it could possibly hurt. You could send it via email if you'd prefer or just not send anything at all, as I'm not sure how much they even help. But I don't see how it could possibly hurt you.

As far as waitlist movement goes, it depends on the year. I've heard of as few as 6 people to as many as 15-20 getting in off the waitlist. Just remember that SDN is just a snapshot of all the people on the waitlist, so if 1-2 SDNers get in, that usually means there are a few more who are not members who got in. Good luck to you all!

I would say that this year might be a little different as far as sending things in goes. I would actually say that from the looks of how I've heard the class is shaping out and how many people have already sent in their checks to be a part of the class, it might not make too much of a difference whether you send something in. Additionally, if they have told you not to send stuff in, I would say honor their request. I think the best thing to do at this point might be just :xf:

Well, crap 🙁

How is the class shaping up? Are we talking like 95% of accepted people have sent in their deposits?

I already sent in a LOI a week ago. If they read it, great. If they bin it, no big loss. At this point it up to the AdCom to decide our fate.

Whats the story with the dancing banana?

Unless you have this on pretty good authority, I don't understand the point of posting this dire warning in an online forum....especially with such vague language and an inappropriately cheerful dancing banana....

Haha you guys need to relax a little. If you read FCD's post, he merely states that there may be no point in sending something in, not that you shouldn't. He also insinuates that the class is filling up quickly, something that anyone can find out by stopping by admissions and asking Richard Wallace "hey, how's the class shaping up?". As in previous years, just because people send in their deposit does not mean that they won't decide to go elsewhere before May 15th, or get pulled off the waitlist somewhere else after May 15th.

And FCD always posts a dancing banana after his posts. He and Burnsie have some weirdo obsession with it. He wasn't taunting you.

I just find it odd b/c on the Duke forum two years ago this poster (FCD) was like the most hardcore Duke waitlistee on SDN that year. Wonder if he would've followed his own advice 😉

Crazy...well, I just withdrew my acceptance so hopefully there will be some movement. I don't think it's possible for a school to know the full situation until May 15th.

Ahh, yes! One down.
There is always hope, lads. Sometimes it’s sickening (like a Disney movie). Sometimes it's blinding (like the hope that when you run upstairs in a horror movie that you won't be killed).

Ya sorry for the inappropriate banana. I just love that thing. As far as the vague comment goes, I keep it vague because in the end you really don't know what is going to happen. I am merely trying to pass along what little info I do have. Either way, just make sure to remember that getting into Duke or whatever other school would be fabulous and may even be a dream come true (like it was for me), but at the end of the day, all you have to do is look around you - at your friends, at your peers, or like in our cases at the people who are in the hospital - and quickly you remember how lucky you are to be doing what you are doing and to be in the situation that you are in. Just remember that throughout this process there are a lot of ups and downs, and you may not get into the oh so coveted DREAM SCHOOL you had hoped to get into, but you have a great life and a noteworthy future in front of you... so make the most of it. That may be kind of vague, too, but whatever. Holler.

Ahh, ya. There really is nothing wrong with a dancing banana. I thought it might good tale behind it.

withdrew from waitlist.. good luck everybody

So what does everyone think about the chances of this waitlist moving before May 15?

I mean...we can hope, right?

Who did you send an LOI to?? Thanks!

I sent my LOI to one of the professors who interviewed me. He forwarded it on to the AdCom. I sent it by email; the mail from Ireland takes weeks to get to the states. At least send it to someone, you don't really have anything to lose as long as you aren't badgering them.

I withdrew my acceptance today... I hope that my position goes to one of you, especially if Duke is your top choice. Good luck everyone!

Thanks man...I appreciate you keeping us updated. Good luck with whatever school you choose or have chosen.

Not much activity recently. Any word on what is happening? Did anyone else send a LOI or talk to admissions? Only a week until D-Day ladies and gents. Keep your mobiles charged and hopes alive.

a little birdy told me may 19th is the day to watch...

indirectly through someone with ADCOM knowledge.. I wouldn't take it to the grave but I think it is credible, and am certainly not making it up

I interviewed in Jan, and no news as of yet! Although less one month ago, the admissions office emailed me asking me to submit my financial aid documents, giving me a dateline of only 3 days! What does this mean??? 😕 Am i still in the running? Have i been accepted/waitlisted? Why aren't they letting me know my status?? This is too much for a Monday.

As in letters should be sent out or letters will be in our mailboxes or they will be getting together to talk about to whom they might be mailing letters?

I would try calling them, because I think they sent all the initial acceptance/waitlist stuff mid March...

Anyways, I just withdrew my acceptance, so hope it gets the waitlist moving, good luck all!

omgggggg.... just got a call from Dean Armstrong. I'm off the waitlist!! Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear...

thanks, guys! centrion, i sent a letter of interest after interviewing, but not after being waitlisted. good luck!

omg, i got the same call from Dr. Armstrong this morning, too! FYI i didn't send in anything extra after my interview thank-yous, so i wouldn't worry that any extra letters were necessary. best of luck to everyone!

Hey guys,

you should post on the waitlist movement thread. Right now it's totally incomplete, and it's sort of a nice central place for people to see what's moving and stuff.

ahhhh!!!! CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!!! i would die to get a phone call like that... 🙂 🙂 oh please let me in!!! :luck:

Congrats to those who got off the waitlist!

Anyone think there's a chance for more phone calls tomorrow?

I got in!! I interviewed in October, wait listed in March, wrote a letter of intent about 2 weeks after and found out I got in today. Sincerely...good luck to everyone.

Any current student or anyone with inside info on admissions know roughly how many spots there are for wait-listed people? Will there be a delay before any more people are called?

Thanks.

I'm interested in Duke Med. Does anyone have a rough idea of the weekly first year schedule? I couldn't find it on these forums.

Thanks!

Most days run 9-3 or 9-4 with a break from 12-1 for lunch. During Molecules & Cells (biochem, genetics, cell bio), it is all lectures. During Normal Body (anatomy, physiology, histology/microanatomy) you will have anatomy lab 3 days/week from like 2-5 I believe, and then histology lab 2-3 days a week from like 10-12. Anatomy lab is optional but I think Histo might be mandatory. Neuro is mostly lectures with some lab. Body and Disease has micro lab, pharm lab and path lab, which are all mandatory and are at various times, with lectures in between. Most days again run 9-4. During first year, you will also have Practice Course 1 day/week from 2-5, which will have something to do with patients - they give lectures on talking to patients, taking a patient history, etc, and then later in the year you go on the wards and practice taking patient histories and writing them up. Throughout most of the year, attendance at lectures is optional, unless there is a patient case and a patient is attending the lecture, in which case that is mandatory (usually about 1 - 2x a week there will be a clinical presentation to link the material to a disease/patient). All lectures are video recorded and can be accessed online for streaming.

For those of you waitlisted, how long did they give you to make a decision?

Dang man, congratulations on getting off the Duke waitlist! Duke is definitely an awesome place to be! That's still a tough choice between duke and harvard, but you definitely can't go wrong.

If you're in harvard for New Pathways . . . well since I'm on the NP waitlist, go to Duke!!

Naw but in all seriousness, congrats, and feel free to post questions/concerns about Duke. I did LOVE it for undergrad.

what's your little birdy saying now?

My little birdy is saying...

You didn't get off the wait list go QQ :-(

haha there's got to be like 1-2 positions moving before classes start, right?

not holding on to the hope tho...

I got the call from Richard Wallace this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I never thought I'd get in. I've been doing a jig all day. Good luck to those of you still on the list!

thats interesting- I called Richard Wallace yesterday around noon- he said its all over, waiting to hear back from one guy next week(assuming that's you)

he said, there's always residency...heh
