I was accepted off the alternate list on Thursday morning! I loved GW when I interviewed and was completely elated when the Dean called me right after I got out of bed! Much better way of waking up than a cup of coffee! This is totally a dream come true and I can't wait to move to DC. I wish nothing but the best for everyone else still waiting.

maybe it's because they are just on a slightly different schedule than last year or the people who got in just aren't on SDN.

they confirmed that there has been "some movement" off the alternate list already, but that's about all they could say. they said they can't be sure of how much or little movement will be coming but did mention that last year they pulled people from the waitlist throughout the summer.

I was interviewed in early March, so I don't think they are going by date. I had sent in an update letter in December, was offered an interview in February, sent an LOI after my interview and another one after I was told I was on the waitlist stating that although I was currently accepted elsewhere, GW was my top choice . hope that helps. good luck

From what the other people have been saying, it seems like they call in the morning and talk about applications (or something?) in the afternoon. Has anyone received an acceptance call that wasn't in the morning? Just wondering.

Oh and btw, I should probably "officially" say that I am on GW's waitlist too. I don't want to paste the list because its long, but yup, i'm there.

Well...this may not be exactly the right thread, but it is GW related. And plus, when more people on this thread get in they'll have to worry about these too! 🙂

1. Oh no, you don't get away with just finals. You have midterms...several of them per semester. At least that's the way it works during the first two years. As I recall, in 1st year, they kind of come in groups with some breathing room in between and then in 2nd year you basically have a test per week and they put most of them on Mondays for some reason. And then 2nd year is capped off by the biggie...Step 1. In third year, for most rotations you have one shelf exam at the end of the rotation and also some sort of practical exam. Fourth year has very few tests except for Step 2 and I think maybe the EM rotation has a written test, but it's much more clinical evals.

2. Officially, I believe they don't rank students. In the Dean's letter (aka the MSPE) that goes out to residencies, it does break down how students in your class did in their rotations. So, if like half the class honored OB/Gyn and only 5% did in Surgery, then that would mean different things for you depending on your grades (so, you'd look really good if you managed to pull off an Honors in Surgery and relatively bad if you only got a Pass in OB/Gyn). I've also heard they use a code word like "we believe Mr. Jones will make an [outstanding, excellent, very good or good] resident" in the closing line of the Dean's letter, but this is unconfirmed. Maybe a 4th year or alum can weigh in.

3. You'll be fine. Don't stress about it. One step at a time. Focus on getting your ducks in a row for living situation, etc.

And hold on waitlisters...I didn't get in myself in '06 until late June! If you love GW, let them know it!

on the brighter side, chatting with Dean Scott revealed that gwu has been going above and beyond the LCME's expectations in fulfilling its standards to come off the probationary status.

though LCME won't be visiting again in October, and the decision might be coming out in February, Dean Scott assured me that gwu will definitely be off probation.

Might I also add that the LCME has already approved GW's plan to correct its problems. Looks like good things are to come in the near future.

I'm been silently following this thread for a while. Time to share the misery 😀.

Am I the only one that kinda wishes he didn't see the long list of people on the waitlist? It is kinda scary and disheartening but I know many of you either have an acceptance or multiple waitlists, possibly to a school you'd prefer at least as much as GW. So I really hope we all get into the med school of our choice this year and not have to relive the misery of another application cycle, let alone correcting our flaws (gpa, mcat, ec) and possibly spending more time to apply earlier. Now that I have lived through this once, I really wouldn't wish this stress on anybody! So I really hope we all get the news we are waiting for!

This is my last shred of hope for this season - if I had an acceptance somewhere else I would run with it, the idea of going through this process again is nightmarish. Do you guys know if the $3000 ($2900 if you already paid the initial deposit) matriculation/orientation deposit is refundable? I know the it's due June 15th. What happens if you get off a waitlist at another school, can you get your money back?
