hello everyone. I hope that January brings good news to us all. Good Luck.

Does anyone know if interviews end in March or April? Do I have a chance at being accepted even if I am not a URM as long as I make it clear that I am totally on board with Howard's mission of working in underserved areas? I really am, in fact, most of the schools I applied to were schools that emphasized goals very similar to Howard. Honestly, while I'll take what I can get, I kind of don't want to go anywhere else except Howard. It truly has everything that I am looking for in a medical school. Like I said, I have a good GPA, but my MCAT scores were subpar and I won't hear back from Howard until they receive my January MCAT. I am worried though, I saw a lot of people of my race and socioeconomic background with 33 MCAT scores and excellent GPA's who either got waitlisted or rejected. I truly don't mean anything offensive about that, I'm just worried I won't be taken seriously during an interview considering that I come from an upper middle class background. Now that sounds cocky, crap! I'm sorry!

I have heard that Howard is interviewing thru April. Howard has one of thr most diverse classes I have seen at any medical school. As long as you have a genuine desire to serve the underserved, then you have a chance at being admitted. The only thing that might hurt you is them waiting for your January mcat. They won't get your scores until February and by that time, they may have done most of their interviews. Im not saying you don't have a chance cuz you do. But it is hard to be late at a rolling admissions school. I hope and pray all works out for you.

Thank you. I can see from this thread that you have been wanting to go to Howard for awhile. I have been reading your comments and I especially think you deserve to go. From the looks of your icon, I take it that you have been accepted for class 2013? If that is the case, congratulations. I admire your dedication and faith.

Anyone had any luck at calling the admin for a status update? It says specifically not to contact or that they can't verify reciept of letters so i don't want to annoy them, but if someone else got ahold of them and was given useful information that would be good to know

I might be able to help you out chief. Wassup?

Ive been complete since Late October and no word, just curious if i should continue to leave well enough alone, or call to see if they're even considering me still. It'd be great to have the opportunity to interview at howard, and want to know if no news is good news, or silent rejection...

I got the acceptance letter today! Good luck to everyone who's still holding out (Especially you B!). I think they had a long winter break 🙂.

Congratulations! Hope everybody is doing well, I have been following this thread for some time. Good luck with everything

Thanks! I interviewed a long time ago (in October), but there was a missing letter of rec so my file got delayed.

I haven't hear back from Howard since the email that said they're moving to a new office several months back. Does this mean i'm rejected or are they still reviewing my application ?
Does anyone know the average for Howard ? I want to know whether my GPA and MCAT is competitive (3.3/30 respectively) for getting an interview and I am not an URM.

I got the impression Howard is less focused on numbers and more interested in a commitment to underserved medicine. What kind of ECs do you have?

I did two years of biomedical research, developing instruments for veterinary surgery and biomedical diagnostics.
I worked a summer at a city's housing and redeveloping, working with the homeless.
one year of tutoring of students from disadvantage background and learning disabilities
a year international humanitarian work, developing pump for war torn afghanistan.
40 hrs/wk work schedule for my first three years of college
tau beta pi - engineering honor society
doing several other things that i enjoyed

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

all my EC's are focused to helping the underserved and i still have not heard anything.

-big brothers big sisters,
-emt in a medically underserved area
-latinos in science: provoking science interest of elementary and middle school kids
-christians in action: food to the homeless of skid row
-variety of fraternity community service: breast cancer, tsunami victims, can food drives

I keep hearing people say things like, "silent rejection." I'm getting a little bit paranoid now. There is no such thing as a silent rejection is there? If I were to be rejected from Howard (or any other medical school for that matter), I would be informed of it, yes? Also, in addition to everything that is required in the application process, I sent two letters of interest to Howard. The first was to explain why it is my top choice medical school and how I want to participate in its mission of giving special quality healthcare to the economically and resourcefully disadvantaged. The second was to explain my interest in the student body and faculty. What's done is done obviously, but do you think this is too excessive? I don't want to irritate the evaluators of the school that I wish to attend the most.

Any news lately? I haven't heard anything yet, but I am hoping this week will be my week!

Yes, such a think exists as a silent rejection. As a reapplicant to medical school (and to Howard), I think the only M.D. program that "forgot" to send a rejection to me last year was Tulane. Now that their secondary is computerized, that shouldn't happen again. It happens most truly at D.O. schools where people apply on the deadlines (in like March, April) as a last ditch attempt in droves when the class is actually already basically full. I knew many people whose secondary fee was cashed late in the game but who never heard a word.

that is so fuked up to me. i got flamed earlier in the year for being disappointed that i did not recieve an interview at Howard. and i am still pissed, and if i dont even get a rejection letter in the mail, i will be even more pissed! it is rediculous, i wish i could cancel the check i wrote with my hard earned cash before they cashed it if they think that we are so insignificant that they can't even aknowledge reciept and subsquent rejection of our application.

EDIT: jus when i thot howard has it in for my family, they offer my lil bro a cool full-ride + laptop 2 the undegrad. ha...okay so maybe its jus me and my other bro who they hate haha

Bump! How yall doing? Man I love Howard. I am continuing to pray my behind off that I will get accepted and be there in July. I also hope that I will gey to be in class with many of you in here. We just have to hold on a little bit longer. God bless!

Hahaha! Yeah, but I still love them! Hopefully my decision email/letter will get here this week or next. I have faith that the Lord is going to bring me an acceptance. I trust the Lord with all of me!

Hey! Were you interviewed? If so, may I ask what the interview was like? This question goes for anyone that may have been interviewed by the way.

Wassup Pooka. Yeah, I interviewed on 12/10. It was extremely relaxed and for me a lot of fun because one of my dreams had come true. When we got there we had to fill out a green sheet that pretty much mirrors the secondary and then we went and sat in on a first year class for a little bit. After that Ms. Walk, who by the way is freakin' awesome, gave us different presentations about the history of the school, which is extremely rich, curriculum and where we go after we have interviewed. We also had a fin aid presentation. Then we had a tour of the school: anatomy lab, histology, that ever so beautiful library, and then over to the med center for lunch. I had my interview after that. Some people had their interview earlier. My interviewer was really good. She was very much interested about who I am. So we pretty much went thru my entire amcas to talk about some of my not so pretty grades.

All in all, it was a great day and experience. It definitely solidified Howard being my #1. You get a real sense of what family is when you get there. A real sense of a school where everybody there is for everybody and everybody wants to see everybody succeed. Their support system for each other is crazy good. You get a real sense of the history of a school that has been around since 1868, I believe. HUCM is the bomb and I am really am hoping to get accepted.

Hope you hear something soon because I believe HUCM is a place where anybody would want to be! God bless!

We`re all rooting for you BD2B. Best of luck to you.

I regret to say that I have sabotaged myself. Instead of keeping with the MCAT score I already had and just settling down, I rushed myself and retook the test. What was the result? A lower MCAT score. I never would have expected such a thing to happen. I should have listened to all the people who told me not to dive into it so fast and wait until I finished my physics course. I guess that basically voids out any possibility for 2009 admissions. This was my dream. I'm not trying to make a pity fest out of this forum or anything so I apologize if it seems that way. I am just shocked. Either way, I wish all of you the best of luck and congratulate any of you who have already been accepted. I mean that without spite or sarcasm.

You still have 1 interview this cycle. Have a good answer for when they ask you about it, and remember a high MCAT does not mean you will be a good doctor.

Bump! Had to come and bump one of my favorite threads.

Hey so you followed your gut and had a little bump in the road, you will bounce back from this. Some schools look at your best of the two MCAT scores. If I would have listened to every piece of 'advice' I had gotten, I would have never even finished undergrad. Keep your head up, don't become debilitated, and address the things you need to address. If what you say is true about this cycle, and this being your dream. Then focus on blowing next cycle out of the water. Every day is an opportunity to make yourself a better applicant. So, grieve for like 15 minutes and then get back in the game. There is no excuse now that you have gotten this far for you not to be able to turn your 'dream' into a reality. You can share your frustrations here. 2% of premeds are going to be psychologist, they can use the early practice of listening to peoples issues. And all doctors deal with other peoples problems, so join the club.

On another note, I have been searching everywhere for my Howard acceptance letter and can't seem to find it....

I have the audacity to hope that it is coming soon.

Hey Everyone,

Anyone know if Howard is still interviewing?!

Seems like an amazing school which tailors to my mission of serving the underserved.

Dr.oo 🙂

Keep hope alive Beerog. Your letter is on its way!

Hey Geliebt, thanks for the cup of hope. I am going to use it to wash down my Cheerios.

Answer me this (I know that is not grammatically correct but work with me here):

If Howard interviews 300-350 for a class of approx. 100 and they accept about twice as many to fill the class of 100, then that means.....

They send out approx. 200 acceptances.

That means that about 66% of those interviewed get accepted.

Please let me be in the upper 60 😀😀😀

Wassup Beerog! I think their class is more like 120. But what you are saying sounds about right. Our acceptances are coming. I have a feeling that we both are going to be in the next batch. Keep praying big guy! We are both going to be golden!

True, I hope so. You will be a great doctor. You have the empathy thing down packed. Are you thinking about primary care?

Great idea! You can be in my study group. Definitely have to have a network of success in medical school.

So to update my numbers:

300-350 interviewed
120 matriculants * 2 for acceptances to fill the class = 240 acceptances.

240/350 = 68% or 240/300 = 80%
so between 68-80% chance of being an M1 at HUMC!!!!!!

That's even better numbers BDr2b. Thanks for the help with my math. Anyone else feel free to chime in and help with the numbers.

It helps me pass the time.

Wow 80% sounds insane for us allo school. Hey blackdr2b i saw that you also interviewed at drew/ucla, which would be your first choice if you got into both

Why insane? They just don't interview people that they are not interested in. I am not sure what you mean by insane for us allo school. Watch your mouth, LMAO.

Every school has their own way of doing their acceptances. Personally, I like the fact that Howard does not waste people's hard earned time and money interviewing them if they know they have no shot at an acceptance.

I didnt mean anything offensive by insane, its actually very cool that odds are that good after interviewing. So just chill out.

Yes I did. And I can honestly say that if I got into both, I would be at Howard in a heart beat! Drew was awesome and I live right down the street, but Howard has been my dream for a very long time! I can't wait to get out there! I love everything about Howard!

We can definitely do the study group thing! I am all about each one teach one.

Yes sir I am definitely thinking about Primary Care. Actually, I am about 95% sure that I want to do Family Medicine. So I have been looking into the Primary Care Loans/Scholarships and National Health Service Corps. What about you?

That is really cool man, I love your passion for Howard.

I am leaning toward internal medicine. Although, I pretty much will be working hard the first two years and probably will ultimately decide during my third year rotations. Its a really big decision, however my heard lies in primary care.

Man I love this school! I want to go to Howard so bad. But I am going to remain calm and keep my faith in God that He is going to bring me my acceptance!

Well...

I figured I must let my voice be heard since this thread is starting to turn into a beerog2003 and BlackDr2b reality show! J/K. I have my interview on Tuesday and I am beyond excited. I have been patiently waiting for this oppertunity for quite sometime. Especially after following the likes of UVABranch through her journey I truly believe that anything is possible with the good Lord on my side. This means that you two are in for SURE. I'm not just saying that. I really feel it in my heart.
So.... in the midst of proclaiming our future I would just like to note that I would also like to join this famous study group of yours. Im leaning towards OBGYN since I've basically spent my time involved in womens health for quite a few years now. Does this quality me for the prodigious honor?
Oh and I am totally looking into the NHCS. I think its the perfect way to fund a career that I want to spend assisting the underserved anyways. Ok that's all for my rant today. I may not post often but i'm on this thread EVERYDAY. Keep it coming everyone. It's a great way to pass the time! 🙂

Well, Good luck on the interview. I am sure you will do well. You are absolutely welcome to join the study group. There should be a group name...
hmmm... maybe the 'I Have a Dreamers'. You guys suggest some names and we can have a vote.

7 more days until mar 15 lets hope we hear something next week. Is the news usually sent as an email or snail mail?

The way I have seen it is, we will get an email from Ms. walk saying that our decision letter is in the mail and we can call for the decision. Since the 15th is on a sunday, we might get the email on this friday. That is the way it happened with last months decisions. 2 of my friends got their email the friday before the 15th. So we shall see. Lets pray that friday will bring us some blessed news.
