They're reviewing the wait-lists now and anticipate making large-scale offers the beginning of May. I've had so many heart attacks this semester I think my right ventricle has packed his bags and left for Belize.

good luck to you guys!!! :xf::luck::xf::luck:

on a side note, has anyone gotten FinAid information (besides merit based stuff) yet? If I get decent need-based aid I might just WD from my 3 WL's immediately.

I just got my packet in the mail!!
A $20,000/year scholarship certainly makes the decision a whole lot easier... 😀
I'm 80% sure I'll be going to Pitt next year!!

Sounds familiar. Be sure in the excitement, to have someone wise read the scholarship letter carefully before commiting. Pitt offers many of them and is notorious for changing their mind once you arrive.

hmmm...3 posts, all bashing pitt. either a troll or extremely bitter and in the minority of students who have attended pitt.

if you get a scholarship, congrats! i highly doubt pitt will just decide to take it away from you...

anyways, wouldn't that be highly illegal?

has anyone heard about when they are sending out need-based aid?

haha yeah, something doesn't seem right about giving you a letter saying "congratulations! here's $20,000 if you come to pitt!" and then saying "j/k" when you actually show up...

anyway, at every school there is going to be at least one person who has a bad experience. i complain about pitt every now and then too, usually when i'm feeling lazy and don't want to do work. but i can tell you that everyone i've talked to loves our school--and we're working on changing the things we don't love.

What laptops are you guys bringing to Pitt? I don't skimp on my electronics and I'm considering a Macbook, 15" Macbook Pro, or Macbook Air. I'll probably max out whatever laptop I get b/c I'm sort of a computer geek (but not with linux and that stuff). The MB has a bad screen (and no discreet graphics), the MBP is big/heavy, and the MBA is generally slower and more RAM-limited (but not for medical school tasks, necessarily)... decisions, decisions 🙁

I'm bringing my fairly new (1 1/2 years) Toshiba that's still working really well. I'm just going to put everything on an external harddrive and "reformat" my comp so it'll be like new 🙂

Will many of you plan to buy things for your apartment when you get there of before you get there? Also, do you think it will be fine to move in the same day as the white coat ceremony or will there be activities going on during the day of the ceremony?

Last week, Pitt said (via email) that FinAid letters were going out at the end of the week and continuing into this week. Has nobody heard anything yet??

buy things like what? I already have everything I need, I think, so I'll be taking all of my stuff with me...

I'm checking my email constantly waiting for this elusive financial aid email... I bet she planned on sending that email on Monday and we won't be getting financial aid info until the end of this week. I can't officially commit to Pitt (in my head) until I see the financial info. What's the hold up?!

Hey 30 sec, for whatever it's worth, no news on the wait list here either...

ONOY, such as buying a mattress, dresser..etc if you're getting an apartment.

I'm just bringing everything. My wife and I have all that stuff in our current apartment. If you don't own that stuff, it might be better to buy it when you get there depending on if you want to rent a big uhaul to move...

there aren't any official activities on the day of the white coat ceremony, but it does start at like 3:00 or something. it's probably not the best idea to move in that day--you never know what problems might pop up and moving is stressful enough without having to worry about being somewhere at a specific time. also, you might want to get a shower before the ceremony...and if you have luck like mine, there will be construction outside of your apartment shutting off your water for half of the move-in day.

at least move in the day before. i think pitt recommends giving yourself a week, though, to get everything situated before orientation starts.

For what it's worth, I finished my financial aid applications really early and got my estimate through email a couple hours after the first email said that they were coming.

Anyway... I withdrew today, so hopefully the spot will go to one of you guys on the WL. Good luck everyone.

This makes me wish I had done my FinAid stuff before ~4/12 lol

I've been wondering the same thing. I have to fly in to Pittsburgh, so I can only bring two big bags. So, i guess all I can bring are clothes and my computer.
I was thinking of just buying a mattress when I get there (stores will deliver) and maybe a desk or table or something. But I have no idea what to do about the other stuff (dresser, bookshelf, extra cuttlery, garbage, hangers, all that other miscellaneous stuff: do without or suck it up and spend the bucks).
Either way, I want to arrive several days early to get to know the place, and just get situated. 🙂

If you can't move in a lot of stuff upon move-in, I would suggest don't sweat it. We have well-stocked Targets, Wal-Marts, and a lovely IKEA store right next to the airport, as well as PLENTY of students who will be hawking their wares (tables, bookshelfs, futons, couches, beds) in the Oakland/Shadyside/Squirrel Hill area on Craigslist or the med school's own buy/sell listserve, SOMADS. (Btw SOMADS=awesome) The only things I would suggest bringing for sure are clothes and other personal effects, and electronic needs (cell phone, laptop/desktop, etc.) Everything else can be bought here cheaper than it would cost to moving-van or ship. If you need anything in particular, be sure to post on the "Pitt Med Class of 2013" Facebook group and we'll get on it.

thanks! that's great advice 🙂
can we have access to this SOMADS now, or do we have to wait until we get our official e-mail login?

This is not Pitt-specific advice, but I split the cost of a U-haul w/my roommate when I moved cross-country and went on a day-long Craigslist spree. The van was $50 for each of us including gas and was able to hold a queen size bed + box spring and other stuff as we made our runs. It's a good investment, considering how much you can save not buying everything brand new.

haha, I wish I could rent a truck... but I've a feeling it wouldn't make it across the ocean... 🙂 I can only fly in... hence buying everything new (or used on Craigslist)

Where are you from, Slade? Hawaii, Virgin Islands, or international?

Can anyone at Pitt confirm that accepting the Pre-matriculation program does not require me to withdraw from waitlists?

Hmm, when I first read through it, I thought it meant that you had to withdraw from everything! But after rereading it, it seems as though you only have to withdraw from the schools which have offered you an acceptance. In any case, I would definitely call to make sure!

Hawaii... I'm pretty sure I'll be the only one from Hawaii, so there goes my secret identity 🙂

haha sorry lol

so you're trading in incredible weather for shi++y weather... nice haha 😛

it'll be nice to see snow again though 🙂

Dear Slade,

Ironically you will not be the only incoming student from Hawai'i. Lol.

Anyone received the elusive "end of the week" financial aid email?

I called today about the pre-mat program. Sounds like they are pretty clear that they expect you to come to Pitt if you apply for the program. However, he also implied that they wouldn't be able to stop you from staying on waitlists, only that it was not appreciated.

the pre mat program is free right? I understood that they even give you some money to offset the loses you would incur from missing out on a summer job

The wording seems to imply that it is only for those with financial need. I'm not sure though, he didn't sound happy by my question so I didn't have time to ask.

oh, incidentally, I just met another future MS1 from Hawaii!

a few of my classmates are from california and at least one of them wears flip flops all year round...bring your hawaii style with you!

So, I called Pitt about financial aid packages, and I won't be getting mine until "sometime next week." I turned in my info in the middle of March... This is very frustrating.

Hi,

I am an entering M1 (class of 2013) at UPitt and I was hoping to find out both the experiences of previous students as well as whether people in the same class as me are going to participate in this program. I am going to medical school directly after undergrad and hope to get an academic edge through this program. I wouldn't really be in it for the whole diversity/settling-in/house-hunting/exploring-the-city aspect of the program. Does anyone have any advice they could share or personal experiences with the program?

Thank you.

ishr, I don't think anyone is going to help you when you talk like a gunner, especially when you mention that you aren't really into meeting anybody or anything like that. you really think I'm going to say "hey ishr, here's what you should do if you want to beat everyone". those strategies are secret my friend, so you're gonna have to get advice about getting an "edge" elsewhere if you wanna beat me and everyone else.
