So it looks like an email = interview but a status update with a letter notification = possible rejection??

I'm scared to check my status page!!! :scared: (But I know I'll be checking it obsessively anyway)

Ok, I changed the formatting a little. We're now split into in-region and out-of-region and in order of the date of receipt of the "complete" email. I also added a place where we can later add the date we receive our next decision (rejection or interview).

Good Luck everyone!

is anyone writing the autobiography isntead of using their AMCAS statement? if so, how are you doing the two differently?

I wrote about my experiences working in my medically underserved community and challenges of rural medicine, and discussed how this has prepared me for medical school.

From UW's FAQs:

What is the UWSOM looking for in the additional personal statement that is part of the supplemental application?

This is a good place for applicants to add anything they feel was not covered in the AMCAS personal statement. Because the UWSOM has a particular interest in serving rural and/or underserved populations, any volunteer or paid experience spent working with these populations could be explored in this essay.

do yall think UWSOM looks more heavily at the additional written autobiographical statement than the AMCAS statement? I want them to read both and take both equally, because I'm talking about different things in each.... thoughts?

Given the level of scrutiny oos applicants are subjected to, I think it's safe to say that both essays will be carefully read.

I finally finished my autobio. It took way too long, almost 3 weeks. It's my last secondary though so it feels awesome to finally have them DONE!

2 pages (arial 10pt). I called and asked for guidance on length. The woman I spoke to said there is no hard and fast limit, but to keep in mind how much material reviewers have to read already. I said, "1 page? 2 pages? 3 pages?" She said 2 pages is fine, but make sure you aren't being redundant.

Hey Doc Henry,

We are waiting buddies. I sent everything in two weeks ago but I was informed that I am currently under review and I will be notified by email with the committee's decision.

Shesh! I own a house in AK and pay the 5th highest property taxes in the nation, dang it! How much more settled can you get?!?

But rumor has it that they don't even begin to interview AK WWAMI applicants till January. Boo! That's a long time to wait.

Good luck with your cert!:luck:

I know, I hate this waiting. The only reason this happened to me is because I went OOS for school and therefore have also worked mostly in OR, not WA. I sent in so much stuff, including 3 expired licenses dating back to my first one in 2001. I think thats pretty good proof in addition to my lease agreement, car registration, bank statement, two years of taxes, pay stub, husband's pay stub, moms taxes, cable bill...probably more that I'm forgetting.

I called the office and they said they received it and I should hear back within 1-2 weeks. I really have no reason to worry, just like you probably don't either, but its frustrating.

Well, heres to waiting indefinitely!

Does anyone know when UW will start interviewing? I can't seem to find anything from last year application cycle to shed some light. University of Alaska's WWAMI web page state that interview will be conducted from January to March.

Ack!!!! Say it is not so!

They start interviewing a week from today, but alas you are correct--Alaska WWAMI interviews won't begin until January. They are Jan. 7, 8, 9, and Feb. 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27, with final decisions being made the afternoon of the 27th.

Thank you, tianac! Where did you find that information? We should put you atop a mountain or something!

Maybe you know the answer to my other questions:

1) I know there are MDs in AK on the selection committee who conduct our WWAMI interviews but I am unsure about who decides who will be interviewed from AK, is it the AdComs at UW or the WWAMI folk?

2) How does UW handle people from WWAMI states who don't get certified ( I have lived in AK for three years but I am completely paranoid about my residency). Do they get any type of consideration or do they go into the uber-competitive OOR pool?

BTW, I love your signature quote.

Anyone know when the Wyoming WWAMI interview invites start?

Wyoming interviews will be Feb. 17, 18, 19, and 20, with final decisions made on the 20th.

I don't need a mountain....an acceptance would do...lol!

1) I believe that AK, WY, MT, and ID each have their own AdComs. Although I'm not 100% positive.

2) Yep, unfortunately if you don't certify, then you're not technically in-region, and are therefore out-of-region.

Hope this helps!

seriously?!?! I didn't realize they had even sent out invites yet

I know, I've been wondering about that too. I mean, I suppose its possible that people that aren't on SDN may have gotten a couple interviews, but how long could that possibly go on? I mean someone should have heard something by now...

Anyone got the cajones to call them and ask when invites will start going out?

Do you know if they have a different interview schedule for OOS applicants?

Yep, each of the WAMI states has its own schedule. Which state did you specifically want to know about?

Edit: Never mind, I didn't catch the OOS part...lol. OOS applicants use the same interview schedule as WA applicants.

I meant to say OOR. I'm from Maryland but went to college in California (I know, nothing to do with WWAMI at all).

Not me, and it would be kind of premature since I'm not even complete yet (damn residency crap!), but I would love to know. So someone please do it😀

tianac2, do you happen to know what this year's WA/OOR interview schedule is? Thanks in advance, you've been an absolute godsend in this thread! 👍

UW already started giving out interviews, mine is on Tuesday, Oct 7th, I was complete mid july

The WA/OOR schedule starts this coming Monday, and goes all the way through mid March. They interview Monday, Tuesday, and Friday every week except for holidays, and for WAMI interview days (if one of the WAMI states is interviewing, WA/OOR isn't).

Wow, okay, that's a lot further off than I thought! I guess I'll just not worry about it till then. BTW, how do you know all of this?

I know all of this because I'm sneaky, sneaky, lol! No, actually I'm a re-app, and about 2 weeks ago I remembered that when I got the invite last year, they sent me a link to a page that had everything you could want to know about their interview process, and it occurred to me that they probably just update that page from year to year, so I went and dug out the link, and sure enough, there it all was.

As far as I can tell at this point, the people who have gotten invites are people who were complete in July, which means OOR. The residency verification process kept all of us IRs from being complete until at least August, and for most of us, early September, but hopefully we'll hear something soon!

Tianac2,

Do you happen to know which dates represent what cities? Is January Seattle and February Anchorage?

For everyone else... which do you think is a better strategy? Interviewing early or later?

Thanks again, Tianac2!

No problem, I'm glad I can help other people get some info at least...lol

The Anchorage vs Seattle thing is actually the other way around; Anchorage in January, Seattle in February.

As far as UW goes, it is undeniably better to interview early. The way their process works is that they interview for 4 weeks (give or take), then they have an Executive Committee meeting where they decide the fate of all of the applicants that interviewed since the last meeting. The decision can either be accepted, rejected, or continue under consideration. If you get the "continue" decision, your file is re-reviewed at every subsequent ExCom meeting. So, if you're going to get stuck in continue-under-review hell, its best to do it early so that you can get reviewed at more ExCom meetings. (Although that in itself is painful, that's what happened to me last year, all the way up to the final meeting when I finally got rejected.)

I just want to say that I absolutely hate their "continue consideration" = competitive pool crap. It is basically a waitlist before the actual 2 waitlists (ranked and unranked). What are the chances that as the season progresses, more people will remember who you are and advocate for you? I wish they would just make a decision instead of stringing people along for the entire season.

Agreed. It was seriously painful. I cried when I got the "continue under consideration" email on decision day. Then I stayed neurotically on top of my email on ExCom days once a month for nearly 6 months...it was exhausting.

Two questions- any one who is a WA resident based on their parents being WA residents, but you, the student, attended university OOS? Any hassle from the residency people on this, assuming you are still a dependent so your parents do the form?

If the residency paperwork can delay your file, would it be smart to just fill it out next June when the app is submitted, prior to it being requested?

I'm not dependent on my parents, so I'm in a different situation. However I did go to school OOS and was told that was the red flag that made me have to verify my residency.

As far as doing the paperwork early, I'll just say this. Don't worry about the paper work and filling out the form, that isn't he tough part. Just make sure you have everything ready to send in as proof of residency. I sent in tax returns, bills, stuff from the university that showed i was OOS, vehicle registration, voter registration, etc.

EDIT: If you submit in June though, I wouldn't even worry about it delaying your application because they don't even start handing out invites till August/September, and don't start interviewing till October.

Thanks a bunch for your help! And good luck with the app process this year. I am hoping you hear good news real soon!!

So when are Idaho interviews?

Did we ever figure out if "a letter is coming" comment on your status page = rejection?

I'm scared to check my status page...but I guess I have a while to wait anyway. 🙄

I hate to cause any anxiety on here, but I met someone at an interview yesterday who is interviewing in Alaska in January.

I guess now that some invites have gone out it's time to stress out again? 🙄

Really? What school were you interviewing at? (Congrats by the way!)

I won't start stressing about the interview until my residency certification is finished... ugh! Why is it taking so long?!?

Tianac2, I was able to change my preferred interview site from Seattle to Anchorage. I thought they would interview at Seattle first but it worked out in the end. Thanks again for that valuable info! I sincerely hope that they don't string you along like last time. Here's to a quick acceptance!:woot:

So when are Idaho interviews?

Idaho interviews are January 20, 21, 22, 23, with decisions on the 23rd, and then again March 9-13 with another round of decisions on the 13th.

Thanks everyone for all the luck! I'm hoping that they will see how dedicated I am and how badly I really want to go there by the fact that I came back for more!
