Any OOS applicants hear from UWSMPH yet? I interviewed on 10/10, still no word as of 12/08.

I just got a letter telling me that my "2009 application to the Doctor of Medicine program at the UWSMPH is not yet complete" and that "The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application but is still considering a final decision". It goes on to say that "the timeframe for further information is likely to be mid-January".

Has anyone else received this deferral letter? I interviewed on 11/7, in-state.

Were you OOS?

Just a heads up to anyone curious, interviewed 10/24 and my app still hasn't been evaluated by the board...and I'm in state.

Wanted to stop by and say hi-I'm new to the thread. I was just granted an interview for January 9 today. I'm super exicted! 🙂

Hey,

Does anyone know if UWisc accepts update letters from people who haven't been invited to interview yet? If so, do you just e-mail the update to the admissions office?

Thanks!

you can call the admissions office and ask

They do not accept them. I sent one by email yesterday and they responded saying that they do not accept letters and if I am invited to interview then I can provide any new information to my interviewer. Tough break for us.

Super stoked about interview invite on 2/27. I know it's really late but I did apply late. Anyone else interviewing on the same date?

Sorry to bother, but I had a couple questions in regards to my situation. I was complete at UW around mid October, recieved a rejection letter in early Dec, and just a couple days ago, recieved a interview invite for early March.

1) Did they mess up in either rejecting me or in accidently giving me an interview spot meant for someone else?
2) Since the interview is in early March, am I essentially interviewing for a waitlist spot?

I got a rejection letter too, but it was sent out in error. If you read the letter they wrote, it will probably indicate that they aren't offering you a secondary app (which I had already received and submitted by the time I got that letter).

An email went out a day or two after I received the letter stating the rejection letter was sent in error.

Check with admissions just to make sure.

Good luck!

Anyone going to be there on Jan 16th?

How about on the 23rd?

How many people per interview group? Is it 60 like MCW or a smaller group?

Why did the SDNers get split up this month?

Lol, I wouldn't put us all in the same room, either. Can you imagine? 😱 We'd wear them out!

I think I read somewhere else that the group was 24 or 25. I'm bummed that I won't get to meet you!

There were 21 folks there when I was there.

Does anyone know what the rate of acceptance is for each interview group? How many interviews are they doing per year and how many acceptances? I read somewhere in this thread that it is different from past years, but I can't find any stats for c/o 2012.

It's about 50% out of state if you make it to the interview (from what they told my interview group). They'll give you more specifics at your interview date.

Last year:

Residents: 459 interviewed, 176 accepted, 125 matriculated
Non-res: 167 interviewed, 94 accepted, 38 matriculated
Total: 626 interviewed, 270 accepted, 163 matriculated

matriculated # includes 8 students who deferred admission

Thank you! It looks like you have a great chance for an acceptance.

I'm IS, so not as great a chance, but we shall see! :xf:

I am just glad the deep-freeze should be over by then- they are talking about -25 to -40 degree windchills for most of this week! (If anyone is interviewing Friday, DRESS WARM) 😉

The numbers scotty said do not match those that someone listed on the first page. Anyone have an idea whose are correct?

What would be the best way to get around in Madison? Assuming one flies into MSN, is it recommended to rent a car, or to take a shuttle from the airport and use the good old walking method to get around Madison?

I don't know which numbers from the first page you mean. Can you reference the post number that you're talking about?

The numbers I posted were from 2 sources: MSAR 2009 and the packet with matriculant/applicant data that the admissions staff put in my folder when I interviewed.

I found the bus system to be pretty adequate. There is only one bus that stops at the airport and it takes you to the north? transfer point (maybe east, some directional). From there you can transfer to buses that run downtown and through campus. There was a helpful man at the visitor's information desk at the airport who was able to provide me with bus tables and maps.

I would recommend, however, that you dress warmly. Below zero temps are bad enough if you're walking around ... now imagine waiting around for 20-30 minutes outdoors at an unheated bus station.

Yeah, and it might even be best to take a taxi if its really cold. They were expensive, though. Maybe 25 bucks or so from the airport to med school campus area.

The numbers shown are the first page were:

~220/~300 (~75%) IS interviewees were accepted

~100/~300 (~35%) OOS interviewees were accepted

Total 320 acceptances for 165 seats, which seems pretty accurate, as the waitlists were probably ~80 IS and ~40 OOS. IIRC, no IS applicants got immediate rejections but I could be wrong about that.

but if you got your info from MSAR and that packet from the interview, im thinking you are probably correct. I think someone asked during my interview how many people interview and I think someone mentioned around 400. Not positive though, it was kind of early.

I really don't think the above numbers are right. This is what I have from my USNews book for people who applied in 2007:

IS: Interviewed: 459 Accepted: 156 (34%) Enrolled: 123
OOS: Interviewed: 167 Accepted: 99 (59%) Enrolled: 32

I heard somewhere that the procedures had changed even since the 2007 entering class- not sure if it was here or through an advisor. I know for sure they do not automatically interview all IS applicants meeting the minimum MCAT/GPA requirements, which used to be the case.

The bus system in Madison is pretty good- depending on where you are staying, there may be a shuttle to the hotel. Otherwise, depending on the interview date, check the weather report for the area to see if you prefer to wait for the bus or take a cab. The low temperatures for this week are under -10 degrees a few days, so dress warm and be careful out there! :luck:

I was excited to receive an invitation to interview on 2/6. Just want to get some pointers about where to stay in the night of 2/5. I will be flying in from Milwaukee and driving to Madison farily late around midnight. I am looking for a comfortable bed and quiet neighborhood. The admission office recommended a few places like Lowell Inn for ~$80/night or the Memorial Union guest room for $60/night. Could anyone familiar with the campus suggest a place for me (inexpensive, close to the HSLC). Thanks a lot!!

Your cheapest bet would be Memorial Union, unless there is a student host possibility (but with arriving around midnight, that's probably out of the question anyway). There's also a bus (Route 80) that is free, picks up at the Union, and drops you off close to the med school/hospital.

Because I will not be able to take statistics before I matriculate and they are not willing to waive it

Cool. I'm definitely going to my interview; I was just wondering if anyone knew how easy it is to get on a bus to Chicago from Madison, for the weekend after the interview. Does Greyhound, etc. have routes between Madison and Chicago?

megabus and van galder both have routes connecting madison and chicago.

Just rejected after being completed since august sigh :/

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Good luck tomorrow Nanon! Stay Warm! (Current temp = -13 degrees 😱)

:luck: :luck: :luck:

i interviewed 12/12. i'm so nervous because I know that I should be hearing back in the next few weeks. for those of you accepted. what does the acceptance envelope look like? large, small, thick, thin...... and anyone know what the rejection envelope looks like in comparison to the acceptance one? lol.

Unfortunately, I know I read somewhere that the only difference is the number of sheets of paper in a regular size envelope:

1 for rejection or wait list

3 for acceptance

Good luck!:luck: :xf: :luck:

thanks!!! and also, i had another question. I interviewed about 5 weeks ago and i know its still early but i really want to call the school and ask when my file is scheduled to go to the review committee. i know some people on this thread have done that, but i'm wondering will that hurt my chances of getting in? should I just wait or is it ok to call and ask them. i heard they are really nice. what should i do???? uw is my absolute #1 choice!

Thanks! Had my interview today, and you're right - it's damn cold out there! I think it went pretty well. :xf:

For the folks who are asking how long it will take - I got the word that they're running behind because of the weather (yes, it's that cold), and that it's taking closer to 6 (maybe 7) weeks to get an answer after your interview.

I am sooooooo in love with this school now. (pickme!pickme! 😆)

Congrats, I'm glad it went well Nanon! Thanks for the info on the wait times...

Did you attend the social thing the night before? I interview on the 30th and I'm wondering how beneficial it would be to go...

I interviewed in early December, got antsy and called the school to see if my file had gone to committee. Secretary told me I was accepted- so no calling does not hurt your file.

To previous poster, I did not go to the social thing the night before- I wouldnt worry about it.

Congratulations Mleick! And glad to hear it went well, Nanon. Good luck to you 🙂

congrats on the successful interview Nanon. i know you were really excited about it. didn't you LOVE how family friendly everyone was. That was one of the reasons I really fell in love with UW cuz I could talk about my family openly, unlike other schools I've interviewed at.

And congrats Mleick for getting in!!!! O wow! I wanna call Monday now, but I'm nervous. I hope I have the same results as you. And if you don't mind me asking.... (you can PM me back if you want) did you interview dec. 5 or 12? and when did you make this call to the secretary? last week, this week, what day etc.....? I'm just trying to get an idea of their timing. Thanks!

Many thanks! still waiting for the official acceptance letter - still worried that I will find out there was a mistake! I called on thursday around 1pm pacific time. I interviewed on the fifth. Committee timing has been discussed earlier in the thread-- basically the time your file goes to the admissions committee is random (within in a window), so if you interviewed in early december they may or may not have reached a decision yet.

thanks mleick for the info. yeah i know about the random committee timing. i may still call next week tho. we'll see how brave I am. 😳 but even if they don't have a decision, it would be nice to know when i'm scheduled to go to committee. thanks for all the help.

I went to the social thing. It was helpful, if only because it made it easier to get to the right place on time the next day! And they gave a good rundown of what would happen during the interviews, and we got to ask a lot of questions. But, I think I could have done well without it.

Luck to you!

thanks mleick for giving me courage to call UW. I called Friday and they said my file was up for review this Tuesday (27th)!! Oh my, i'm so nervous. They said I could call back next week after Tuesday or I could just wait for a letter. They were really really nice though. Hopefully, i'll have good news......
