So, this is more than a bit off-topic, but the mention
of the trolley reminded me....

CCLCMer, have you by any chance seen a chrome open-roofed equivalent of the Oscar Meyer weinermobile blasting polka driving around at all? Saw it back in August driving past UH and was very confused...

Yes, I've seen it too. I think it's from the Cedar-Fairmount summer festival.

The opportunities available to you may vary, but here's what happened last year!

Day 1
We put you up in a fancyschmancy hotel, then feed you and give you free drinks (while you schmooze with your [awesome] prospective classmates and the current 1st years, who are most likely representing student orgs). This involves showing you some Doc Opera dances and other student performances. If you get really lucky, you'll see Christian do a drum solo.👍👍👍👍👍

Day 2
The following day, we also feed you, but then show you a whole bunch of school/cleveland-related highlights (in case the alcohol didn't make up your mind for you). You get to meet our faculty at breakfast (my table was graced by Dr. Smith [awesome] and Dr. Haynie [awesome]). After the school highlights, we load you up on buses and escort you around town (check out the popcorn at West Side Market!), then take you downtown for (more free) fun and games. Last year, the second years took us clubbing after that.

Day 3
For some people, there is no divide between day 2 and day 3. Chances are, though, you shouldn't be partying quite that much.:d On this day, we feed you and send you on your merry way.👍

Blargh for making this decision difficult. I was planning on doing OSU's second look because I live so close to Case and it would be easy to do something on my own, but this sounds like too much fun :scared:

Myuu, you forgot to mention one of the best events! On Saturday night, students go in small groups to have dinner at MD alumni's homes. Our hosts made us an incredible feast and engaged us in lovely conversation about Case, their lives, and the future of medicine. I think it was my favorite Second Look event - it gave such a sense of community, and I thought it was amazing that the administration had organized this for us.

Ah, mine was not quite as, uh, enriching as that, though I have heard that many groups had a similarly awesome experience.

You should totally come to the Case second look. OSU? What's that?

Ah, mine was not quite as, uh, enriching as that, though I have heard that many groups had a similarly awesome experience.
This sounds like something we need more details about. 😀

wow interview invite! 🙂

received today at ~6pm eastern time; complete 9/11 // interview: 1/12

some off-topic congrats: dude, UCSD!!! congrats!!!

I posted that in one place. How many threads do you keep track of on here?? But thanks. And it also puts me in a strange position with Case. 😕

Hey, PowerButton, welcome back!

Ya, been MIA for a while - way busy out on the east coast actually. And after not checking this thread for a couple of days, I just gave up trying to keep abreast of things here..

Hey PB! You see my super awesome eggplant a couple of pages back? I was sure you were gonna comment on it!

Perfectly befitting this thread. I had to go back quite a bit to look for it; this thread is too monstrous for my brain. But if that's not school spirit to the max, I don't know what is.

Tomorrow night at 8.😀

(I'm eating! I'm allowed to post if I'm eating!)

haha I saw "Accepted" in your sig so I perused your posts to see where at...

I also have seen it, but didn't realize it was part of the festival.
Hey LTTP! How's going? You decide which Second Look you are going to? Gonna update your acceptances on the Nontrad forum? I gotta look out for my nontrad acceptance/waitlist twin...😀

Myuu, CCLCMer, et al. :

How was Doc Opera? Any photos you can share?

Would you guy send in update letters if you SUBMITTED 2 abstracts to an international conference? Also, got acknowledged in a paper too.

Is that decent? This is for CCLCM. Just because their committee meeting is soon.

I know that Case will tell you within 2-4 weeks of your interview (and if I recall, they said that their next adcom meeting is 12/14), but what's the deal with CCLCM? I'm told they accept half their class (16 students) in Dec.. anyone know when? Also, I'm just wondering- how often do people who get accepted actually decline to matriculate? I got the impression that they only take like 1-2 people off the waitlist each year. This is just a curious question, as I know it won't apply to me. I'm definitely getting accepted. obviously 😛

I think CCLCMer answered many of your questions here:
CCLCMer said:
What will happen is that the adcomm will have the first subcommittee meeting on December 15, which is a Tuesday. Approximately 10 people will be given acceptances (could be as few as eight or as many as twelve). Dean Franco will then call each of these people to let them know that they've been accepted. Since Wednesday is her clinic day, my guess is that she'll make the calls on Thursday the 17th in the evening. This process will be repeated again in January and February, after which a waitlist will be made up. Does that make sense?

AND
CCLCMer said:
...I also want to emphasize to you and everyone else that very few people will be accepted in December, only around ten TOTAL. So there is a possibility that a few of the regulars posting on this thread will be in that ten, but most people will not be accepted in December. What I'm trying to say is, don't give up hope if you're not accepted in the very first group, because most people won't be.

CCLCMer said:
...When acceptances do come in late December, there will only be approximately ten of them. They will all be given first by phone call, followed up by mail. CCLCM never communicates with applicants through Iapply.
As for # taken off the waitlist:
CCLCMer said:
. Last year I believe we had about 50-55 acceptances for 32 seats. So there may not be tons of waitlist movement, but there will be some. 🙂
CCLCMer said:
Sometimes people get accepted from the post-interview hold list before the end of interview season (January or February). But yes, at the end of interview season (March), all of the post-interview holds will change to one of those other statuses. As for the percentages of people who get rejected, waitlisted or directly accepted from the hold list, I really couldn't tell you. I don't think any of us can. Sorry.
CCLCMer said:
POST-interview decision possibilities:
Option 1: Acceptance. Self-explanatory.
Option 2: Rejection. Also self-explanatory
Option 3: Hold. No decision is being made on your application for now. The adcomm will review your app again later and may at that time decide to accept, reject, or waitlist you. As with a pre-interview hold, predicting the odds of each outcome is pretty much impossible, because it depends on how many spots are open and who else is on hold with you.
Option 4: Waitlist. This is a category that is made in the spring after the interview season is over. Waitlisted people may be accepted if a space opens up in the class between April and July, but they will be rejected if they do not get off the waitlist before classes start in July.

I hope that helps.
I hope that helps too.

Wait a tick, does that mean I have to apply to Indiana? 😛

I still haven't decided which second look to attend. Have you? As for the nontrad forum, I suppose I could. I've been very e-lazy lately.

Photos? Where were going, we don't need photos.

You didn't apply! I thought we agreed to "The Master Plan" ahead of time!?!😎

You still up for the Geriatric Medical Student Interest Group, right? 😉

Philisophically, I'm not sure if I should go to the place I am leaning towards or give the other school a "fair hearing" and go to that weekend instead...I'm so torn...🙁

Consider this your e-nag for being e-lazy

Myuu, that video is just... :claps:also great recording quality

I have seen five Doc Operas now (there were two in 2006), and last night's show was really awesome. It was the 25th anniversary, and the four original students who started Doc Opera came and did one of the acts. (They were really good too.)

So besides the skit Myuu posted, you can see rehearsals from a lot of the acts on Youtube.

Would you guy send in update letters if you SUBMITTED 2 abstracts to an international conference? Also, got acknowledged in a paper too.

I would wait until your abstracts get accepted before submitting the update. But the acknowledgment is probably not worth mentioning. Sorry. 😳

I think you just need a really long signature on each of your posts! No seriously, when I kick into Type AAA Mode I too want instant/near real-time gratification. So when I can lend an (indirect) hand, why not?

I don't have enough room. As it is, I'm going to have to delete something else from my signature if I want to put my fifth year schedule on there. 🙁

Can I get some input from the Case Westerners on this - I'm sending a letter in to the office, is it advisable to address it to Christian? Dr. Mehta? the Admissions Committee?

Or, is it one of those things that doesn't matter too much?

hey guys, sorry if this came up before, but does case give merit scholarships?

thanks!

they do, but only to 15 ppl a class, i think?

BTW, does anybody know if we have to write an essay, and what topic that essay would be on for applying for merit scholarships?

I'd like to know this as well.

I'm thinking of addressing thank-you notes to my interviewers (Dr. Metha and my student interviewer), and a more formal third letter to Christian (director of admissions) or the admissions committee. I'm just not sure who to address that third letter to!

And they ripped off Lonely Island. 😛 In all honesty, the rest of the lyrics and video scenes are completely different. I think our opening is better too.
I actually thought their opening was more creative than ours. Using the dermatomes to segue into T-pain was really clever. And the part where they said they were in Parkland (where UTSW is) and how it's coded in their DNA strands was pretty awesome. But overall, I agree that I like our video better. My favorite part (besides Dean Haynie) was the stethoscopy and the getting up on the phalanges. And the empathic responses. Ok, I like the whole thing! 👍

There are other schools who did it too. This is UTHouston. Big thumbup for the Miss Cleo reference!

Morehouse. Funny, they had the whitest guy singing T-Pain's part.

I know I'm relatively new to this thread and forums, but I noticed the above question, and was wondering whether one of the Case students could answer it. I'm planning on sending a letter of update and profession of love to Case, seeing as how I'm on the post-interview hold list and would be very happy if I received a letter of acceptance.

I also have an additional question: I have sent updates in the past by attaching an updated CV, and summarizing any new entries. Is that the preferred approach?

i don't think all of them are full-tuition. I'm not sure really, during my interview day, the finaid officer was out, so I've gathered most of my info from previous year's thread.

I think people usually just send a letter detailing their new experiences, the updated CV is probably not necessary. You can mix in how much you love Case in your letter too 😀

Have you considered reading our finaid page on merit scholarships?

Yea, it's the same info given in one of the pamphlets during interview day, doesn't go into much specifics. I'll probably email the finaid officer with a list of question later on, but thanks for the link 🙂

How did your performance in doc opera go? Do we have a vid 😀

Ahhh, oki.👍

Doc Opera was totally awesome.😀 No vid yet, as they haven't released the DVD. Not sure when that's going to make an appearance... hopefully in time for Christmas.😍

DVD takes forever to come out. Probably around February.

Sure, they'll be out by Christmas. It will just be Christmas 2010. :meanie:

So seriously, this is a more realistic ETA.

Just a quick question -

If I emailed Christian a letter of interest, but didn't receive a response back (after 5 business days) - is there an appropriate way to follow up?

call the office?

i received a followup....so u may want to check

Some of you might want to check out this article about the Cleveland Clinic in Newsweek.

Besides the fact that it's about this hospital, it's still worth reading anyway. The authors do a great job of explaining how even at CCF, one of the most efficient hospitals in the country, there is still only so much that can be done to cut costs due to the current system of billing multiple insurance companies and other payers. The bit about how we have 1400 billing clerks for 2000 doctors just blows me away. :uhno:
