IHeart,

I noticed that too at second look. I wanted to take mine home to discuss with my wife anyways, so I didn't return it right then (still haven't). But if you recall, they suggested you sign it right on the spot if you were comfortable. I suspect the 'return ASAP' instruction is more in line with what they intended. I plan on calling tomorrow for further clarification anyways. Hope this helps.

I headed off on my own and didn't get my form with everyone else. But likewise, I wanted time to think how much I really wanted to take out. Let me know what they say! I need to call Case/CCLCM tomorrow for the million forms they sent us...

And ironically, this weekend I slept so much that I no longer love sleeping. I get terrible headaches if I sleep too much, and if I try to sleep them off, they get worse. Go figure.

Recently received million forms? Hmmmm....I haven't received anything recently. What are you talking about?

Oh...you mean the stuff that is on the website...nvr mind.

question about CCLCM financial aid...

since the clinic covers the full cost of tuition, do you still have access to subsidized/unsubsidized stafford loans for student living/food expenses?
Yes.

CCLCMer, speaking of all these $$ issues, Liz Myers gave us our FA during second look. At the bottom of the first page, it says that "Instructions regarding the next steps will be emailed to you in May 2010. Please complete the enclosed Allocation Acceptance letter after you receive instructions." The second page, the Allocation Acceptance Letter, at the bottom says "Please return this form as soon as possible to Denise..."[their bolding, not mine]

....What should I do?
If it were me, I would complete it ASAP after getting the instructions next week. Or just call the office and ask if you're worried about it.

There ya go. 👍

By all means call them if you have questions, but it will be fine. Really. If they need something from you and you haven't given it to them, they will come looking for you. TRUST ME on this one.

And ironically, this weekend I slept so much that I no longer love sleeping. I get terrible headaches if I sleep too much, and if I try to sleep them off, they get worse. Go figure.
Aww, sorry. 🙁

I get that too. The worst is if I've been up really late and then sleep in late. What do you do for it? Taking a shower and drinking some caffeine helps for me.

Yes.

if it's a one-time thing i usually set my alarm to a similar time in the morning and just sleep earlier the next night. you will feel like crap waking up after very little sleep but you will feel much better over the course of the day and definitely on the following day

it also really helps to set your wake-up time to coincide with a new sleep cycle, ie sleep for 4 1/2, 6, or 7 1/2 hours, instead of for 5 or 7

but yea, now that its senior spring of college, i usually get 9+ hours of sleep every day, and paradoxically it does tire you out more than anything. my hypothesis is that humans are naturally adapted to having less sleep on some nights and more on others, and that our undisturbed sleep pattern is to sleep more than "normal" so we can bank sleep for bad nights to some extent...if that makes sense

Yeah I wasn't sure on one of the forms (immunization record-related). I don't want them to harass me about it later when I'm more stressed out.

Aww... chances are you'll <3 sleep again within a week. 😀

Great - I haven't even got some of these forms yet so no worries!

Now that it's my year off, I get a ton of sleep as well. I feel perfectly great. 🙂

For those of you that went to the UP second look, I literally got a call last night from one of the students that works with administration asking if I had questions / concerns about my visit with Case. I didn't, but the gesture was very classy :O

Hi current students (aka Myuu,)

I just received my Case UP financial aid package, I received a little bit of grant, which makes Case within reach, but I was wondering from your personal experience and/or those of your friends, does the award amount stay relatively consistent from year to year barring changes in family financial situation? This would be very important for my decision to attend Case. Thanks so much in advance!

I haven't submitted my paperwork for financial aid just yet, but iceman might know. Sorry!😳

Man, I want my financial aid! I knew completing Need Access at the last minute would screw me over 👎

From my experience, yes. A little Case grant/Case loan each year.

hey has anyone been sending updates to the UP? does anyone know where those should be going?

Personally, I'm ready to hear about computer options.

Agreed on hearing about the computer options. The website says late April so should be soon.

After receiving my financial aid package the other day, I am now definitely coming to Case and am very happy and blessed to be a part of the incoming class. The next step is finding the apartment.

If you're waiting to hear about Mac specs, you might have to wait until after WWDC (they were cool and waited for the announcements on new machines for the cult of jobs). The Dell specs were out earlier though.👍 You can also follow them on twitter for updates.

Hmm. I've never heard of that, but I'll give it a try next time I have a call night. It's kind of like research, right? 😀

That stuff goes to student health. Again, don't stress about the forms. If you're not sure what to do, just call and ask.

As far as you know, have you or any classmates who opted for the Macbooks had any issues doing windows-specific school tasks on your macbooks? I know if you decide to get the macbooks, it comes with bootcamp installed. So it shouldn't pose any problems for any school assignments or tasks that can only be done on windows, right?

Thanks!

I haven't had any issues, no. I'm pretty sure no one else has either. Also, VMWare Fusion is available free from school on a 180 day license (they're sitting on the reg keys for longer use), so you're pretty much covered there as well. The only annoying thing is having to boot into windows for tests, but you get over it.

I've also heard of this...I think it's referring to REM cycles? Like you fall into deep sleep every 90 minutes or so (correct me if I'm wrong) so if you wake up, that's when you're most tired. But that means to not sleep for 4.5, 6 or 7.5 hours 😛

That stuff goes to student health. Again, don't stress about the forms. If you're not sure what to do, just call and ask.

Heh, I'm not going to stress out over the forms. Finishing school and completing projects I signed up to do is a whole different monster to tackle with impending senioritis...curses for being the responsible student.

just did a bit of internet research 😀 besides rem, there are 4 stages to sleep and you start in stage 1, the lightest sleep, and then the cycle goes 1-->2-->3-->4-->REM-->1-->2-->3-->4-->REM-->etc. REM happens 70-90 minutes after stage 1 starts so its actually best to wake up right when you're back in stage 1, which is around 90 minutes.

the catch is that people's rhythms are all different and can be changed by things like caffeine and alcohol, so 90 minutes is not a hard and fast rule. there are new dual alarm clocks now designed to take advantage of this. the first alarm is a light one that you set to go off at the earliest point you'd want to wake up. the second alarm is a strong one that you set to go off at the latest time you can afford to wake up and still get to class on time. the idea is that between those two times you set, you will enter stage 1 and be woken up by the light alarm and feel refreshed, without ever having to hit the second alarm.

For students already at Case- if someone is interested in clubs at Case, are Med students eligible to participate? If someone was interested in starting a club not listed, is there a good way to do that?

Med students are eligible to participate unless the club itself has a we-hate-med-students faction in its membership (haven't met any of these guys). There have been a number of student groups started within the year, so that's pretty much up to you. If you were looking to start a more formalized organization there are plenty of people around to help you get started.👍

Are any Case students on here enrolled in the MD/MA in bioethics, MD/MS in applied anatomy, or MD/MBA? If so, can you either post here or PM me your opinion on the program, difficulty of courses, impact on your free time, etc.? I have read the relevant info on each of the above online, but want a more personal opinion of each program.

In addition, has any Case student on here taken the "free" 5th year or is planning on it for research, another degree, etc.? When would be the best time to take this year off? After Step 1?

hi!

cclcmer or anyone who might know, will more calls be going out the the waitlisters this week?

Hey everyone. Might be kind of a silly question, but do Case students get a spring break? I'm not so much concerned about getting time off, but I know a lot of schools offer break trips, often to other countries, which students can take advantage of. I'm hoping to get some international experience during medical school - does anybody know if there are similar opportunities at Case? Or would I just have to wait until 4th year?

Thanks!

You get a week for spring break during year 1 and 2, 2 weeks during year 3.

Iceman or Myuu, if you have a second:

I'm trying to figure out how much in loans I should take out. At the Case website, our estimate for 2010 is for "11 months." Does this mean after 11 months I get the next years financial aid, or do I have to save for a full 12 month year?

Also, the full loan gives a whopping $1,700 per month (assuming 11 months in that year) with housing, food, travel, personal and other expenses included. I currently live on $1,300ish per month in Southern California, so I'm assuming this is a GROSS overestimate. From the housing prices I saw, I could foresee myself living quite comfortably on $1,300 per month (700 rent and all utilities w/ roommate, 300 food, 100 travel, 200 other). What are your monthly budgets like?

Thanks guys

They estimate 11 months for year 1 because classes go from July to May and don't start again until early August. So technically year 1 is less than 11 months, but you'll end up paying rent for a full year most likely.

$1700 is a huge overestimate if you live with any semblance of reason, even if you live in a single, unless you happen to live in Triangle. I have a 2 BR and get by with at most $1000/month for all expenses. $500-600 for rent + utilities, $400-500 for everything else, and that's being really generous.

This may be a moot point now, but does anyone know where CCLCM is in their selection process? Last thing I heard I was on hold. Does that pretty much mean rejection at this point? I'm trying to decide whether I should bother sending in my transcripts after graduation.

They've sent out their acceptances, created their waitlist, are past the response deadline and have taken a bunch of students off said waitlist. I'd imagine you should have already heard whether you're on it.

You'll only need transcripts before you matriculate, but as for sending in a bunch of good grades, it's probably something that can only help.

wait did people get confirmation that CCLCM received our wait-list post-card?? i sent the postcard on time but want to make sure I am actually on the waitlist..I never got any confirmation

I didn't get any confirmation either. I called a few weeks ago and they said they had gotten it.

I was referring to the batch of snail mail rejection/waitlist letters they sent to the people on hold after they had sent out all their initial acceptances. I didn't get any confirmation either after returning the postcard. Sorry if I scared people. =P

Yay for you getting your stuff done, and yay for me, getting two years of senioritis. Seriously, being a senior rocks. 😀

Strong work. 👍

After I try this, I will be sure to come back and report. In the name of science, of course. 😉

Yes, med students are eligible to participate in clubs. We have our own clubs specifically for med students (some at Case, some at CCLCM), and you can also get involved with other Case activities if you want to. I don't know what UP students have to do to start a club, so I'm not going to try to answer that.

cclcmer or anyone who might know, will more calls be going out the the waitlisters this week?
There is no set time. Since CCLCM doesn't overaccept, every time someone drops, a seat opens up. Dean Franco will call waitlisted people as the spots open up. So when she makes calls depends completely on when the currently accepted people drop out.

This may be a moot point now, but does anyone know where CCLCM is in their selection process? Last thing I heard I was on hold. Does that pretty much mean rejection at this point? I'm trying to decide whether I should bother sending in my transcripts after graduation.
Like someone else already said, you should have gotten a final letter saying you were waitlisted or rejected. If you didn't, call the school tomorrow and ask them what your final status is.

:soexcited: just got my financial aid from Case and I got need-based! I'm officially coming to Case now!

OK everybody...the party is moving over to the "Case (with money) vs UCLA vs UVA" thread for a few hours!

What, you gonna respond to my outrageously awesome (and 100% accurate) post? :meanie:

What about the goal of this reaching 100 pages/5000 posts?

By the way, CCLCMer. The CoA accounts for a microscope but I don't remember them mentioning that since everything was digital. Don't want to take out more than I need, and I gave myself what appears to be an insane $1500 for books/supplies.

Hi everyone. A student at OSU told me that OSU had a state grant to buy an iTouch or iPhone for every med student. (Students had to pay for iPhone plans). Does Case have anything like this? I doubt they do, I just don't want to buy one now if it could be covered in the future...

Got my financial aid from Case today. And by that, I mean I got no financial aid from Case today. 🙁

At OSU, I believe you have to pay for the iTouch/iPhone. The cost is bundled up in the cost of attendance.

Eh, well, there was the standard deal where you got an iPod Touch with the purchase of a MacBook, but that was about it. Things change from year to year, though, so who knows what's in store for you guys.

Awesome! 😀

Also awesome. We Case thread posters know how to party. :hardy: :soexcited:

What about the goal of this reaching 100 pages/5000 posts?
You do know that you're allowed to post on multiple threads, right?

Seriously, the Case thread party lives on. We're just spreading the posting wealth. But no one better DARE suggest that we take ClarKent's thread up to 5000 posts!

I have no idea why there is funding for a microscope. In the entire history of CCLCM, we have never used a microscope. I did see one once in some dusty path lab in a basement somewhere, but that's it.

Before you make any decisions about how much to take out, talk to Liz about the best way to handle things. I'm not sure how it works if you take out less money and then decide you need more, versus if you take out more and then decide you need less. But she would be able to tell you the best way to do it.

Got my financial aid from Case today. And by that, I mean I got no financial aid from Case today. 🙁
Sorry. 🙁

As sad as we'd all be for you to not come here, you should save your money and go to OSU. Seriously, Latetotheparty, as awesome as Case is, it's not worth paying double the price when you don't have to.
