Hey guys! I interviewed at Cornell this past Wednesday and had a great time! For those of you who have received interview invites don't stress out, interviews are completely conversational. They try not to stress you out since this is when your personality shines, and that's what they are really judging in the interviews. They just want to see how good of a fit you are at Cornell (it really is a very unique system). Anyway I loooved Cornell, students are very happy and relaxed, curriculum is awesome for those interested in primary care, and facilities are simply amazing. Although i would recommend definetly staying with a host since the exposure to the school is very limited just from the interview experienc (a very short talk with admissions ppl, a tour by 1years who dont know anything yet, and a lunch with a couple of students). Anyway good luck for those interviewing!

As to why they chose Ithaca for the undergrad university, I have no idea....

1) It's Cornell University. Not Cornell College. Cornell College is in Iowa.
2) Cornell was established in Ithaca because Ezra Cornell, the founder of Cornell University, was a farmer who owned the land in Ithaca, NY. Its location actually makes a lot of sense because the school was originally established as a vocational school to train farmers, dairy scientists, engineers, ect. Even today, many students go to Cornell to study for very specific professions such as viticulture or hotel administration.

How close warrants an "in the area" email? I will be interviewing at Stony Brook...

Yes... please don't call it cornell college 🙂 That's very... very different. (I'm a Cornell alumni)

Cornell @ ithaca is totally awesome... but the clinical opportunities would be pretty darn scarce.

And yes - the ag(riculture) school is one of the best in the nation. So is the hotel management school. What does that spell for those of us up @ ithaca? We get fresh produce made on/near campus, prepared for us at the hotel school, and ends up in our dining halls (Cornell's one of the few places where people WANT to stay on the meal plan... mostly)

Anyway.... back to talking about the "other" cornell (the medical school)..

If you are not in the tri/quad state area - it probably makes sense to do an "in the area" email for this one.

I see that a lot of people are sending in-the-area emails. I won't be heading to New York, but I WILL be heading to the USA (I'm currently overseas). Does this warrant an in-the-area email or just if you're in New York?

I'm flying into a state that is about a 2.5 hour flight from New York, but that's "vicinity" to me at this point since I'm about a 20 hour flight/connections away right now...

Thanks! 🙂

that's really for you to determine. in your position, i'd send one.

hey guys, do some of you who got interviews mind posting your stats just so i can get an idea of what kind of range they're looking for? thanks!

I'm heading to Columbia and Sinai for back to back interviews and was thinking about sending Cornell an "in the area" email. I live in Philadelphia, so getting to NYC is way less of an issue for me than it is for others. But, I do work full-time and taking three days in a row to do the NYC schools would be much better than making a separate trip another week.

Should I send an email? How exactly are they worded? Thanks guys!

I got an interview in response to an in-the-area email.

So you think it's alright even though I live relatively close (within 100 miles)

3.92gpa, 31Q mcat, oos, submitted late august, received interview invite 3 weeks later

Go for it. I might send one to Cornell too.

Yeah just sent it...It's only about 3 weeks away, so we'll see if this works out....

I have an upcoming interview here, but cannot find any interview feedback on it? Anyone know where I can get some advice/help? Or am I just missing it in the "interview feedback" page?

Anyone know when Cornell gets back? Is it in March? Is there a specific date?

No idea. I check the website daily though 🙂

March 15th, I think. Thats the date most non-rolling schools get back.

a small bunch of students will get an early acceptance in December. Regular admissions decisions are sent out towards the beginning/middle of March

Did they apply early?

I was complete 7/21 and still no word...is there anything I can do at this point...letter of interest etc? I have received interviews at a number of other top schools but Cornell is still my top choice 🙁 I feel kind of stupid sending an in the area email because I am relatively nearby (Cornell undegrad in Ithaca) I know it is still early...is it possible Cornell will go back to my file?

I can't access the status-check page. Anyone having similar problems?

I got an interview in response to an in-the-area email.

Here's what Cornell said in response to my "in the area" email.

We understand that you will be coming to New York City on November 20th and have requested that we look into the possibility of interviewing you then. As we indicated in an earlier message, the review process can take a long time. There is no decision on your application at this point, and we cannot give you an estimate as to when a decision will be made. Our interview season extends to late February and we do not have rolling admissions. If selected for an interview before your trip, we will communicate with you via e-mail.

Since in-the-area emails have worked for other people I'm not sure what this response means. I'm afraid it means they already decided against interviewing me.

I was going to send a in-the-area message, maybe I should hold off on it.

Can't access the status page either (it says the website doesn't exist).

Just got an interview invite this morning. Sent an in the area email last week. They have interview dates starting next week so it looks like they still haven't handed out too many invites yet. Officially have conquered all of Manhattan. I'll be doing a 4 day, back-to-back tour next week of Columbia, Mt. Sinai, NYU, and Cornell. Gonna be exhausting, maybe I'll see some of you guys there.

I was complete 7/10 and sent in an "in-the-area" email because I was interviewing at other Manhattan schools. Just got an invite this morning...which I think must be related somehow to email a week or two ago. They say specifically to tell them if you'll be in the area on the complete status email so there's really no hurt in trying. It's too early for schools like Cornell (which aren't rolling) to send update emails.

Nah, send it. Can only help. It can't hurt. They say to notify them if you are in the NYC area for other interviews.

anyone know if they have student hosting? i emailed them last week about it, no response yet.

oops, never mind. turns out there is.

Has anyone interviewed yet? I have my interview coming up and its going to be my first of any interview, so am a bit nervous. Just wondering if there was any more feedback from this year (there wasn't too much on the feedback forum). Thanks!

How long after your email did they respond? I'm interviewing at another NYC school in early November and sent them an "in the area" email on 10/2, but have yet to receive any response.

Next business day response but it was a form letter type

How ahead of time do you send an "in the area" email? I'm overseas this year, and will be in Boston in Dec/Jan...to me, this counts as "in the area" for Cornell 😀 When should I send an email?

is there a student hosting list?

you need to call or email Admissions re: student hosting, and they will send you an email with instructions. respond to that email w/ day you need hosting and they will forward that email out to their students. they don't have a formal hosting program with a list of hosts to choose from, if that is what you mean.

You should probably send it now and tell them the specific dates you will be in the country so they can work on your schedule

You can't call / send an in-the-area note to Cornell if you live in NYC, so how does one get around that issue...
I haven't gotten an invite from them

You wait patiently like everyone else from the area? It would be totally unfair to all the students applying from far away otherwise.

They never responded to my "in-the-area" email, form or otherwise. Should I send another one to make sure they know, or even possibly call?

I would probably assume they got it and leave it at that. I sent an "in-the-area" email and got an interview about 10 days later. So it may not necessarily be immediate. No point in bothering them too much.

I guess you were right: interview invite today. The dates they provided will let me combine them and Sinai into one trip, nice!
