Whoa. So... I'm filling out my app... and my UCLA credits for chem converted to "semester hours" does not fulfill the 8 sem hour minimum. It only totals to 7.4 (each for general and ochem) Anyone having this problem, because I know for a fact that I took all the classes for the 2-year chem requirement?

Or.... did you guys include biochemistry in your General Chem credits??

I am filling out this right now too and having the same problems. 🙁

Maybe we just use the credit hour straight up on the transcript?? I just called Dartmouth and left a message. I will let you know if they get back to me about that.

Good luck!

Anybody else not have a letters green light anymore? Mine now says this:

Weird, maybe they were having problems with it?

it means that if you have assigned your letters to dartmouth via amcas, they have already received your letters. this is what the admissions office lady told me when i called yesterday.

Cool, thanks. That's good news.

i got my secondary a few days ago but my primary amcas application hasn't been verified yet. i want to go ahead and assign my LORs to dartmouth thru amcas, but am i allowed to do that even though my application hasn't been verified? will i be penalized if i resubmit my app (i.e. get sent to the back of the queue)? thanks

I called and asked AMCAS if you got sent to the end of the line and they said no. Your place in line for verification is based on the date your transcripts arrived or you submitted whichever came last.

Is anyone else still without a secondary request? I've been verified for a month 🙁

I would wait until you are verified, and then assign letters and recertify.

This is the correct advice.

Don't assign the letters until after your initial AMCAS verification. Subsequent certifications for LORs take only a few seconds.

I just talked to the people at Dartmouth and they said to include Chem 153A in the General Chem Requirement. That should give you enough credit...

Should I write about only one thing that is not mentioned anywhere or can I put several things?

It seems like they want you to write about only one experience.

is there a deadline from when you receive your secondary application from dartmouth? for instance, when you receive your secondary, do you have two weeks to complete it or is the deadline in january? i received mine a week ago but I haven't started it yet. Does it need to be completed and submitted in two weeks or do i have more time to work on it? THANKS!!!

To one of the current DMS students, what is it like being in Hanover?

I've lived in 4 places: Ottawa (Canada); Portland, Oregon; Santa Clara, California (SF Bay Area); and now Hanover. My ranking for favorite places to live:

1) Hanover
2) Portland (these two are very close)
.
.

3) SF Bay Area

Honestly, I love living here. You're surrounded by great people and beautiful surroundings. There's no crime and (almost) no traffic. If you like the outdoors, you will love Hanover. Hanover is in the middle of nowhere, but because Dartmouth and DHMC are here, it's a very nice middle of nowhere with quite a few "big city" amenities without the downsides of a big city. Maybe it's because I'm very busy, but I'm never bored here. I almost didn't apply to Dartmouth because I thought of Hanover as being in the middle of nowhere, but I'm very glad I'm here.

That being said, if you MUST be in a city, you will hate it here. There's one (sketchy) club within an hour of the school. There are "only" (more than enough for me) about a half dozen bars in the area. You will constantly bump into people you know. Also, you'd better enjoy winter/snow, or at least be able to deal with it.

Anyway, I love it here and it's one of the few places where I could see myself settling down eventually.

As for distances: ~2 hours to Boston, 3 to Montreal.
Smaller cities: Manchester/Concord: ~1 hour, Burlington: ~90 minutes.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about Dartmouth/the area.

For response #2

I have 483 words (and 2800 characters with spaces).

I wrote about my undergraduate program which was one of a kind.

This second essay is REALLY bothering me. I've been sitting on this secondary for about a week and just cannot find anything worth writing about. I'm totally frustrated because Dartmouth is my top choice and I want to really impress them with this essay, or at least interest them, but I cannot seem to put anything intelligent together.

So far, I've thought of talking about my interest in athletics in maintaining a balanced lifestyle (I did a lot of team sports in high school and have since taken up running throughout college), my research interest in malaria (I've been to Africa, and done two research projects on it), my thoughts on the current health care system (probably too trendy), or my musings on the plight of the primary care giver (if you see a patient on average 3x/year, who becomes actually responsible for instilling healthy habits in patients? schools? parents?).

And now to go put dry ice in a beaker of hot water. That sounds more fun.

I took the word "something" in the question as to mean one thing about you that you have not mentioned anywhere else. Not sure if it is a chance to mention multiple things that you have not mentioned anywhere.

What do people think about this? I have a couple of things to mention but had to pick one.

I would pick one, or pick something that is sort of overarching and use it to talk about several things. For example I used it to talk about my somewhat unusual educational background and how it played out in both high school and college. In the end, I would write it the way you feel most comfortable, since there isn't a character limit you can write as much as you want.

Some people have said they got three green lights, while others are still holding at two (like me!). Has anyone heard if we need to do anything to get that third green light (for the LORs)? I have mine into AMCAS and they are marked received, am I missing something? Thanks.

I would just wait.

For the second essay, do you think it can be something briefly mentioned in my AMCAS activities section, but going into greater detail about it? My descriptions on the primary were quite short, so I'm thinking I'll expand on it, unless it's supposed to be something we didn't mention at all anywhere else.

i had three but then they took away the green light i had by LOR to say they were using amcas letters. You are fine.

for those of you who are still waiting for a secondary, i called them a couple days ago to ask them about it. the lady told me that dartmouth batch sends them twice a month, so i must've just missed the first one this month, as i got my mcat scores on the 30th. she told me the next batch email send will be around today to end of the week, so heads up!

I have a lot of experience w DHMC and some DMS programs. With this in mind, do you think it would be ok for me to talk about why I like Dartmouth for prompt 2?

Yeah, sure. If I had special or unique experience like that I would be writing about it, too. As long as what you write about is meaningful to you, then I would say it's a good choice.

yeah, it's not in your AMCAS and I'm sure it would be "helpful to the Admissions committee when reviewing your file," so I'd say that would work.

quick question:

"1. Please indicate your plans for the 2009-10 academic year. If in school, please list your courses. If working, let us know something about the nature of your job."

is this asking to explain the research we are conducting, or something significant about it... for instance something like this: " given the freedom to devise and conduct my own experiments based on my results, gives me a strong sense of ownership of my project"

i guess what i'm trying to get at is, what does "nature of your job" mean? thanks!!

I tried to be as specific about the projects I was working on as intellectual property rights allowed me to. I talked about why I was involved in a particular therapeutic area of research, what I did and who I collaborated with, what I learned at my job and what I was hoping to accomplish before returning to school.

Still no secondary invite and I've been verified since 6/9 =/

If we're in school, do we simply list the courses? Should be provide links to the courses?

Or if we're doing a honors research project, should we describe anything?

Or is it good enough just to LIST the courses?

Thanks!

Hey All,

I just got my secondary app last week before Dartmouth has even seen my primary. Taking that into consideration, what do you suggest for the turn around time?

Thanks!

no time limit, in general you should try to get them in asap, but dont turn in some rushed essays. Just try to not let it take longer then 2weeks.

About a week sounds reasonable.

Letters of Recommendation

We are now using the AMCAS letter service, so please go to AMCAS to verify the receipt of your letters.
All questions regarding your letters of evaluation should be directed to AMCAS.

I got 2 green lights and this, does this mean that they got my letters? I think other people got this too

I'm going to be in school for my senior year of undergrad. What exactly do I write for the first essay? Just literally list my courses? What did y'all write?

that's exactly what i did. i didn't view it as an "essay" so i just listed curriculum

I turned it into a list written in sentence form. I had to explain what my senior capstone thing entailed, so I thought it best to write it out. Listing is probably fine though.

I had a second paragraph with the activities i'm going to continue.

For the first question, the only thing I can write about are possible job leads. I am in Mexico finishing up my research, and have not landed a job back in the states.

Do I just write about my two job leads and why they are a good match for me and how they will help me strengthen certain skills?

Thanks!

That's what I did. I had other details of course...
