Woke up this morning with a phone call from Dartmouth; accepted off the wait list!

I had scenarios in my head of intensely waiting until August 8th...I am extremely grateful for not only being accepted but also being informed of it so soon. I will definitely be going to Dartmouth.

Good luck to all who are still waiting!

Congratulations! I look forward to meeting you in August!

Dear Members of the Dartmouth Community,

Today we are announcing the creation of The Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science, supported by a spectacular commitment of $35 million from an anonymous donor. The donor believes that Dartmouth is uniquely positioned to lead the advancement of this critical field. More about this new enterprise is included in the following press release (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~news/releases/2010/05/17.html) and at TDC.dartmouth.edu.

Provost Carol Folt and I expect we will identify other major initiatives that draw upon Dartmouth's unique strengths as the strategic planning process continues.

This is an exciting moment for Dartmouth. This gift recognizes the excellent work of our faculty and the collaborative strength of this academic community. The gift also expresses the will of a generous donor to help us tackle one of the most challenging issues of our time.

Sincerely,
Jim Yong Kim
President, Dartmouth College

That is very exciting. I went to second look and was blown away by Dr. Kim's speech.

Physicsnerd, I am regular MD but would like to do research (maybe even basic science). Should I be contacting lab PIs or is there an easy way to look for opportunities? Do many MD students do research in the first year or the first summer? Now that I have decided on DMS I want to get the ball rolling on this. Thanks!

Lots of people do significant amounts of research during med school. A list of PIs willing to take med students for the summer between years 1 and 2 of med school is typically compiled about halfway through year 1. This list, however, is typically incomplete (there are many more investigators willing to take students than are lister). I would recommend that you start looking at the research that different people do and make a list of people whose research interests you. Then, run that list by one of the older MD/PhD students 😉 Once you get feedback about the list, just e-mail the PIs who get the thumbs up. Most investigators would be happy to at least meet with an interested in med student. There is typically also funding available to help fund med student research for a summer.

DMS Students-

What time do classes start during the week for first year?

I understand that only 18 students are going to be living at North Park. Where do most medcial students live first year?

Thanks in advance!

I think saw in this thread earlier that orientation starts on Aug 9.

And only 18 DMS live in North Park?? Did they tell you this number? I always thought it would be more popular! I will be living there in August.

Sorry, I meant what time do classes start in the morning?

Who's looking for a roommate? PM me! I'm clean, tidy (not OCD though), easy-going, and don't come with a lot of baggage.

Hi CosMd,

As someone already mentioned, classes do typically start at 8am each day (with a few scattered instances of a 10am start instead).

Our class (M1) lives in a variety of locations--including North Park, Sachem Village (another graduate student housing location), and in apartments/houses/condos etc. in Lebanon, West Lebanon, Norwich and Hanover.

Hi, I'm new to NH, but I'm really excited about staring a new school year at Dartmouth. I was wondering, if I'm getting a car, what can I expect the average miles per year to be for the average DMS student? Is it worth it to buy a car? Or can I get by borrowing or renting a car? If I were to rent, what options are there?

And like most students, I've built up quite a bit of debt. Are there any jobs on campus that can help generate some cash flow? Apparently DMS students cant apply for Graduate Resident Advisor positions...

You pretty much need to buy a car. Trust me. My on doctoring for the first two years alone was a 100 mile round trip every two weeks. If you want to buy anything other than groceries, you need to go to at least West Lebanon (10 min drive). While there are free busses in the area, the only start running at about 6 or 6:30 am (makes it tough to get to the hospital to pre-round on patients at 5), only run until about 7 and don't run on weekends. You might be able to request On Doctoring at DHMC and just live in hanover, but you'll need a car if you're at DHMC for rotations in years 3 and 4, especially if you don't want to walk to the hospital at 5 am when it's 10 degrees outside and snowing. Best bet: buy a used Subaru Outback. I guess you could also try the Zip Car thing I see around here now.

There aren't really too many campus jobs. You can maybe make some money doing research for a summer, but probably not more than $10-15/hour. I am a graduate advisor, but you can't apply because medical and business school students (other than MD/PhD) can't have the job (and the job might be phased out in a year anyway due to budget cuts).

I too have a car (got it as part of the transition to medical school, didn't own one before)--but do have a couple of classmates that don't. They do their on-doc work at DHMC and bum rides from others to get groceries, etc. Most of us have cars and I believe all of us will need cars by 3rd year.

I would focus on your school work over a job (esp. at first to make sure that you have plenty of time to study/pass. I'd work with the financial aid folks to come up with a plan of how to live over the next year balancing your current debt and med school needs (they are really nice and would be probably willing to sit down with you and walk through a plan). I'm not aware of any classmates that have a substantial job--although a few coach locally and get paid for that, do small research gigs, etc. In 2nd year there are tutoring opportunities that are paid.

Thanks! I guess my next question would be, when do we start the On Doctoring at clinical sites? Do we start at our on doc sites from the first week of classes?

The On Doctoring class (where you learn how to do physical exams, histories, etc.) starts in the first week. You do your first preceptor visit at the clinical site during the 4th (I believe) week.

Is is difficult finding parking at the medical school in the morning? I heard there was less parking because of the construction (btw... does anyone know what they're building?). Thanx!

Not really. It's a big parking lot. The later you get there, the longer it will take to walk to class, but the Dewey lot doesn't really get totally full.

They're building a new biology building (more room for labs).

Does anyone know if the North Park apartments come with a bed/desk/chair?

Around Dartmouth/Lebanon/Hanover how's AT&T service? What's the best carrier for the area?
Thanx

Just a few questions regarding sales taxes in New Hampshire...I've read that there is none except for on prepared meals/food?

Does that mean that cell phone plans don't have any taxes added to them as well?

Yes. The only taxes are the room and meals tax (hotel rooms and prepared food) and property. There are fees (like to register your car every year). But cell phone plans should not be taxed under the room and meals tax.

I just received a packet with information regarding the "On Doctoring" course. They also want us to order a bunch of expensive equipment. I am wondering what is necessary and what would be a waste of money right now. Also, the Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope seems fine but there are two others. What's the difference?

Thanks!

Don't bother buying an Otoscope or Ophthalmoscope. Those instruments will be hanging on the wall of any exam room you go into (and cost way too much). Reflex hammers will also be in the room, but they're cheap, so why not? I'm not sure what else they want you to get...

You do need a stethoscope. I got the Cardio III and like it.

Just what I wanted to hear. Thank you.

On the topic of cell phones, is there 3G coverage in Hanover?

I was looking at AT&T 3G coverage map and it said that 3G is only available in Manchester.

Is this the case for Verizon too?

Hey there,

There is 3G up here--but the capacity doesn't seem to be as high as in bigger metro areas.

How is Sprint's service in town? The few days I was there, I didn't seem to have any problems

any chance that there will be more waitlist movement from dartmouth? has anyone heard about being rejected from the waitlist? does that happen?

A chance? Yes. One person in my class was accepted on the first day of orientation.

You get rejected from the waitlist when the school year starts and the class is full. Other than that? I guess if they found out you lied about something on your app they would reject you. Otherwise, you're pretty much on the waitlist until you get accepted or classes start.

Question for current students:

Are the preceptors in the on doctoring course mostly family practicioners and pediatricians, or do some specialize in other areas?

Thanx!

Also internal medicine and some nurse practitioners. Heck, I knew some people with cardiologist and gen surg docs. I would suggest requesting family med, no matter what you think you want to do.

If you dont mind me asking, why family medicine

Specialties are pretty terrible for On Doc. You're supposed to learn how to do a physical exam and history taking skills. You won't routinely practice those in a cards clinic.

I have little interest in family med as a specialty, but I got to practice all of those skills and saw adults and children. I think it's a terrible idea to request something like cards for On Doc even if you think you want to be a cardiologist. If you end up at a specialty clinic, make the best of it. I, however, was very happy with On Doc experience in family med.

Has anyone successfully emailed their Student Preference Checklist?

I got my forms a bit late and thought I wouldn't be able to mail it in by June 25th, so I emailed it and heard nothing back...?

I emailed and asked for confirmation of receipt of my email, but heard nothing either. Let me know if you hear anything!
