interview invite by email on 1/4. small pooled 8/19.

Wow that is a looong wait for you guys. Congrats and good luck!

Yeah, it really was... I was actually complete at Iowa earlier, and haven't heard anything from them whatsoever, so that's pretty frustrating. I don't know why it's taking so long (okay, actually, I do know), but I suppose I should just call them. But still, it's been a little frustrating, to be honest.

Hi guys,

I'm interviewing here on Friday the 8th and I got in super early (Wed) because it's snowing all day tomorrow and I did not want to deal with any airport incompetence. Anyone else have the same idea? I'm staying at the Holiday Inn by the airport and I would love to mock interview/just chill with my fellow interviewees. If not, see you guys at the social!

IS and still in the gigantic "small" pool. Has anyone taken the time to figure out how many interview dates there are before there are alternate list interviews? Come on MCW :xf:!

Good luck to people with the invites from 1/4!!

Congrats to all the interviewees so far, good luck! Question though, I've read a lot of posts about people getting small-pooled. My application was complete a while ago back in mid-Sept, and I haven't really heard a word from them since. I only recently called them, because their status page doesn't really tell me anything, and they said my application was "reviewed favorably." Does that mean I was small-pooled without knowing? Man, I gotta say I sure hope so, but I don't think so because I would think that would be an email type of thing. Should I call them back?

MCW looks fantastic, and I'm OOS, so who knows, especially with current timing not looking so hot here. Thanks guys

Hoping for an invite tomorrow! Yay for mondays @ MCW!

Hey Guys,
I was sent an e-mail about being "small-pooled" on 8/25/09. I haven't heard back from them yet and I was wondering what I can do to improve my chances. Does anyone know? Also is there a special way they announce interviews to the "small-pooled" applicants? I haven't read much of this thread, so if my question has been answered, can you kindly direct me to the post or re-state it? Thank you!

If you have any new activities or grades to update them about, you could write an update letter (assuming they take pre-interview updates -- double check). And there's no special way to get notified - you just get an email.

By update letter, do you mean a physical letter sent snail mail or would an update e-mail suffice? I did send some updated information recently through e-mail to admissions and they thanked me for the update. That's about it.

Also, I read that they only offer 2 interview dates a month? Is this true and is there more info about how they interview/choose?

Yes this is true. There will potentially be 50+ people interviewing on that day because there are only 2 dates per month. It is very organized though, so don't worry. Half will have a tour while the others interview, and then there will be a switch. 50 people is a lot, so take advantage of the host/social if you can, to get a better feel for the school.

I'm not sure how they evaluate you, but you will have 2 interviewers; you might be called for a 3rd depending on what happens in the first 2 (and I believe you can request a 3rd if you want). I believe this happens when your interviewers do not come to the same conclusion about you. They frame this as a "good" thing because it means one interviewer really liked you (leaving out, of course, the obvious corollary that one did not). I wouldn't worry about it though. As far as I could tell, there were not many 3rd interviews necessary when I was there. I also have no idea how many people are accepted/waitlisted/rejected from each session; they claim there is no set ratio, so all 50 can be accepted (unless of course you are interviewing for the waitlist, in which case probably all 50 can be waitlisted (as opposed to rejected (I like parentheses)))

Regardless of how you feel about 50+ people at one interview day, the great part about how they do things is that you will find out in a WEEK what the decision was on your file. And the school is really great, so good luck!

How do you find out about the "social" the night before the interview?

And does anyone know if lectures here are recorded/pod-casted?

I believe that if you want a student host, you need to be able to attend the social, as that's when they assign you a host. There is also a hotel near the school that has a free shuttle to/from MCW (so you can go to the social and not stay with a host, if you want).

As for lectures, I know that at least the audio is recorded; I forget whether or not that includes video.

Accepted! Received an email from Istwan this morning. First acceptance and it feels good. Good luck to the rest who interviewed Jan 8th.

Does anyone know if you can get accepted without receiving the friday morning acceptance email?

Please let me know if you have gotten an acceptance packet in the mail and didn't get the email, because I have been waiting for the email all morning and am now starting to freak out :scared:

hmm... well i'm from Los Angeles and it's 9:25am PST. the email says that my official packet is sent today, so I probably wouldn't even see it until next tuesday, wednesday.

I interviewed that day too and haven't received any emails. From the interview, I was under the impression that we would get packets in the mail and not anything by email. Perhaps GoBeers received an email since they are on the west coast and they wouldn't have to wait? Where are you from? But I don't have any idea haha, just a guess.

I go to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and I received the email. I wouldn't be too disconcerted if you haven't received an email.

the email was received 6:20am PST.

thanks for the info, and CONGRATS guys! MCW is pretty awesome, and i am still praying for an acceptance email/packet. At this point though, waitlist doesn't seem THAT bad.

And btw, I am also from CA, and I am currently visiting friends in LA. Glad to know there will be potentially so many of us Californians there

Yeah, he made it sound like there was a good chance a lot would be accepted/wait listed, I know a lot of schools send emails vs. letters to a "select few" to get the news to them ASAP, so if that's the case way to go guys! 🙂
I have my fingers crossed for getting a letter soon!! At least a waitlist spot! :xf:

GOD i hope you are right, but as it turns out, I am from the West Coast as well. And yes, at the interview, I also got the impression that no emails would be sent out (only snail mail), so I have no idea what is going on. I guess we will all find out our fates sometime soon. GOOD LUCK to you and everyone else who interviewed that day!

Well I can't tell you about this year's cycle, but I can tell you that one of my best friends applied and was accepted to MCW two years ago. They did not receive any e-mail, just the acceptance packet in the mail. They may have changed how they notify applicants since then but it has happened in prior years. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks so much for giving me a little bit of hope! 🙂 At this point, all I can do is distract myself until I get the letter in the mail. I predict a lot of vodka over this three day weekend!

Congrats to all those who got accepted!!

I got an interview invite on 1/04 as well. Small pooled 9/21.

I love that we can find out so soon! This waiting game is difficult.

Hey AyCaramba, thanks very much for the info. 👍

So just to give you guys a little more info...I interviewed in October and they told us specifically that they would NOT send out emails with acceptances (because people on SDN freak out if they don't get one) but then we got emails that following Friday...I am not sure why they keep saying they won't send out emails since from what I have heard the pretty much do it after every interview session...not sure if they send them to every accepted applicant but they seem to have sent out a set of emails after each session...hope this helps!

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

So I went ahead and reserved a spot for the airport shuttle & social. For those that have taken the shuttle... where does it pick you up?

Also anybody attend the social and NOT use the host program? I'm trying to find a hotel that has a shuttle service that can pick me up at the school after the social, but so far the ones I've talked to don't offer shuttle that late in the evening (I think the social ends around 9pm?). I guess I could always cab it, but I feel silly calling a cab to take me to a hotel that's 2 miles away.

The shuttle picked us up at Terminal 5 at a certain time...you see like a group of people carrying suits and you know you are in the right place! I went to the social but I stayed with a student so that wasn't really an issue...why aren't you staying with a student? were there not any available? I know it made a huge difference for me to be able to stay with a student because they took me out to a bar and I hung out with other med students and applicants so it was lots of fun...if you have the chance I HIGHLY recommend it...if not, then I guess you could always go to the social and ask if anyone was headed in the direction of your hotel that could drop you off...worse case scenario if they say no or you feel awkward asking then just call a cab...

I actually did this. Maybe I'm crazy, but it's psychologically easier for me to stay in a hotel; maybe you're the same way. I admit that you will probably learn more about the school with a student though. I stayed in the Crowne Plaza on Innovation Drive. If you ask for the MCW rate, you can get a room for $89 (+$10 tax or so). That might be steep for you, I don't know your situation. Anyways, I called them right after the social, and they sent a shuttle over to pick me up. In the morning, I took the shuttle back to MCW. (Take your bags with you to MCW and keep them there so you can take the arranged shuttle back to the airport right after (cheaper than a cab); there's a room near admissions in which you can keep all your stuff during the day.)

Hey thanks Sleight & AyCaramba. 🙂 Yeah, I'm kind of weird I guess and prefer to stay in hotels rather than with hosts. I've stayed with a host before and it actually added more stress because I constantly worry about impinging on others' space, having to be quiet in case I wake people up the morning of my interview (I like to wake up hours early to prep), etc. I know I can get a better feel for the student atmosphere by staying with a host, but hopefully the social will give me an opportunity to do that as well. And that hotel was a great suggestion - I just booked it. Thanks again.

No problem! Good luck! I can understand wanting to stay in hotels but I guess I am a bit more comfortable with it bc I spent 6 months in Europe where I basically slept in hostels 3 days a week where there were 6-10 other people sleeping in the same room...haha I forget sometimes that other people may not have the same experiences!

No problem. Yeah I've also stayed with a host before and it was like the night before their first exam and it was kind of awkward. Decided hotels were the best way for me to focus on last-minute preparation and getting a good night's sleep.

Good luck on your interview!

Man...I really want to interview at MCW 🙁 It's such a great school and there are sooo many positives for me to go there. Sigh...I have been small pooled since 8/24...I think I only have 1 chance left since they only invite people once a month. Anyone have additional info about remaining interviews/small pooled people etc???

I got in the pool a week before you and have been anxiously waiting for an invite from this one as well. There will be at least 1 more round but I'll guess there will be 2-3 more since the last round was not for the waitlist. The last few invites will probably be a week or 2 apart

Does anyone know if MCW has a revisit day? There's nothing listed in the revisit thread, so I wasn't sure if anyone knew if there was one last year or if they are planning to have one this year?
thanks

Since no one has posted an invitation, maybe invitations were not sent today due to the holiday?😕

There is not an official revisit day.

I'm interviewing on Feb 5 and the student host and airport shuttles for the night before are completely booked already. Does anyone on here have one of these spots reserved and plan on cancelling?

Thanks

Is MCW giving out anymore interview invites from the small pooled applicants?

Just to add some stats/dates for you guys (because SDN loves stats) from last year, I got small pooled 9/3, interview invite 1/6, interviewed 2/6 for WL spot(I had was tired from interviews and wasn't very quick at getting an early spot...). After that I was waitlisted, then accepted by phone call from Mike Istwan. They separated their waitlist into sections, I forgot how many, but you can call after May 11 to see where you are.

Hope that helps for anyone who didn't know that stuff already! I'm was accepted last year but I'm going to be in the class of 2014, so I'm rooting for you guys to be my new classmates! 😛 btw if you decide to go to MCW, I made a Facebook group so please join! MCW 2014

thanks for the dates--if you don't mind sharing, what section of the WL were you and when did they let you know you were accepted?

(for some reason I think they do 4 sections, but I remember where I got that from)

there will still be more interviews. The interview season ends some time in March I think

invite today. The email said its for the last few remaining spots of the class and the waitlist
