Does anyone know when we need to turn in the drug test form?

What is the name of the Dean who speaks to us at the beginning of our interview day? I lost her business card.

Is Sinai still interviewing? Will they send out invites or are they done?

I called on Wednesday and they said they interview through March. I don't know how far ahead they schedule put it's getting towards the end. Cross fingers!

I interviewed at Sinai recently and had a stellar interview experience. Does anyone know how much emphasis is placed on the interview here or if it's still mostly stats based (my stats are okay but not great - 3.63/35Q)?

I'm a little worried because of how late in the season it is and they are on rolling I believe.

Thanks 🙂

Anyone know how receptive Mt Sinai is to "in the area" pre interview emails?

I sent one and didn't get any response. I did get an invite like 3 months later, although there isn't that kind of time at this point in the cycle.

Still, I don't really see the harm in letting them know. Good luck! 🙂

Has anyone who interviewed for the PORTAL program heard anything yet? I think they were supposed to start letting people know around this time of year whether we were accepted or not.

Has anyone who interviewed for the PORTAL program heard anything yet? I think they were supposed to start letting people know around this time of year whether we were accepted or not.

From the email:
" PORTAL acceptances will be sent out on March 15, 2010, independent of medical school acceptances. Students accepted to the PORTAL program will have until May 15 to decide whether or not to accept the offer. "

So no, I don't think anyone has heard back yet.

So I just called about something else and they told me that their decisions come out 3 - 6 weeks after the interview. However, they also hold review meetings every other Tuesday. It doesn't really seem to make sense to push every one back - do I have my facts wrong, or can someone explain this apparent weirdness to me? 😕

So, do people think the committee is meeting today? If so, how long does it take to hear back from them?

admissions status for many people who interviewed in late january and early feb is being decided today, if info on this board is to be believed. does that mean that if we call tomorrow for admissions status, that they should have an answer?

has any antsy applicant called before they received an email to find out?

I remember the Ast. Admin Director being very adamant about waiting as long as possible before calling because she doesn't like giving out bad news over the phone.

They'll email you fairly quickly with a waitlist/acceptance offer...and they snail mail the rejections. I'd imagine you'll hear quickly if they're actually meeting today...

Was someone who called informed they would be making decisions on late Jan/early Feb interviewees today? It seems that the trend in the past has been to send out decisions the first (or in the case of this month, second) Wednesday of the month... Did someone get some information that would make us think differently? It also seems awfuly soon after the last round of decisions were sent out (2/10). It seems like so far they have allowed a lag of ~ 1 month between decision announcements, presumably to interview another critical mass of students before making more decisions? Don't get me wrong, I interviewed in the second week of February so the sooner decisions are made the better! I just was wondering where this info/hunch came from! Good luck to everyone if they are making decisions today though.

*Edit* - So after looking at the Mount Sinai 2008-2009 Admissions thread it looks like the next round of announcements after early February (2/11 last year) didn't go out until the end of March. That could simply be a case of noone on SDN getting Accepted/WLed in the interim period between the early Ferbruary and late March rounds of announcements, and I totally could have missed something (I hope I did). You can see last year's thread by clicking on the thread under "similar threads" at the bottom of the page. I hope we don't have to wait another month to hear!

Haven't read the thread for a while, and I haven't heard anything from the school. Does anyone know if Sinai is still giving out interview invites?

I called on Monday, and I was told my file would be active for another month, so I took that to mean they were sending out invites for another month. But maybe they are interviewing for another month, and madskillz is right that they are only sending invitations for another week.

I believe that after this week, there's only 2 weeks left of interviews.

yes, they're still giving out interview invites--i got mine yesterday

however, if i understand correctly, march 12 is the last date. the available dates the admissions officer told me were march 2, 8, 9, 12.

good luck!!

btw does anyone know how many interviews are granted and how many acceptances are offered? i couldn't find the stats online...

40-50% of interviewees are eventually accepted (including waitlist).

i.e. really good chances considering there are many waitlistees who will withdraw before being given a decision.

I have my interview on Friday, just perfectly coinciding with this snow storm that is gonna hit the east coast...yet again. I wonder how flexible Mount Sinai would be if I wasn't able to get into NYC.

It seems like people might receive decisions today who had interviewed in late January/early February, so I was wondering if anyone had heard back today??

Getting nervous....

I interviewed the first week of February also but they had said to us that we would hear by the end of February which is why I am worried but I am
hoping that you are right!

Contact them and inquire about it. Mt. Sinai is on a winter storm alert starting Thursday and going through Friday. All staff should know to expect it. I'd be surprised if the admissions office didn't have some sort of plan in place for severe weather problems. After all, it isn't just a matter of whether you can get to Mt. Sinai or not - it's also whether their interviewers can get to Mt. Sinai.

Dr. Valerie Parkas

So did any other waitlister get an invite to second look?

So, there are USUALLY two second look weekends, the regular one for all admitted students, and one held by the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs and Students for Equal Opportunities in Medicine for mainly minoritites, including those on the waitlist, to try and increase minority enrollment of those who are accepted, as we frequently lose a lot of students who get in here and also cornell and columbia. This year, the two are being combined so that all the students can meet the same weekend and the events can be bigger and better, which means waitlisted minorities will still get to go in as large of a group as we can fit. It's not meant to be a reverse discrimination or anything, it's just from combining the two weekends and upping our efforts to get those accepted here at sinai to choose us if this is the right school for them instead of going other places just because of the name factor. (PS this is one STUDENT'S interpretation, i don't speak for the dean or anything...)

Damn shame...wasn't able to fly into NYC today for my interview tomorrow due to heavy snow storms. I called admissions to see if they could reschedule and there are only 2 weeks remaining, with openings only in the last week (March 8 -12) which happens to be my spring break. I assume I was not the only one to not be able to get into NYC, so the rest of us supposed to interview tomorrow will probably get pushed into that last week for reschedules. This most likely means less people will be invited to interview - sorry for the bad news all, but this also means I will probably have to withdraw. Sucks big time

I'm surprised they couldn't be more accommodating. Sorry to hear that.

Are decisions coming out like really soon or something?

I would guess that the next round of decisions will go out this Wednesday, next Wednesday, or sometime towards the end of March. I know that's not very helpful; last month they came out the 2nd Wednesday of the month, early in the cycle they were coming on on the first Wednesday of the month, and last year the March announcements came out towards the end of March. So there's the logic behind my ambiguity. Hoping for word on the earlier end of that spectrum though!

That sucks. Why can't you go during spring break?

Woah...thought this school forgot about me/was rejected. Invite today for next week. Complete sometime in late August. Crazy...

Are you going?

Congrats! I'm guessing I am dead here but this gives me a small glimmer of hope. 👍

I can't go during spring break because I will be out of the country, but at this point it doesn't matter! I was able to squeeze into an interview day this week, so it all worked out. I am very excited to check out this school even though I realistically know a lot of acceptance positions have been taken up. I sort of am under the impression that I will be interviewing for a spot on the wait list, but maybe just maybe one of the last acceptance spots! Time to lay it all on the line now seeing that next week is the last week of interviews!

Hmmm, I'm concerned about this as well. Does anyone know if they still have some spots open for the last week of interviews? My thought is that since they are a rolling school, they know to keep a certain amount of seats open every time the committee meets, so that every round at least some people are outright accepted from interviews. I really don't want to trek all the way to NYC just to interview for a WL position...

I figure no one is going to know the answer to that for sure, but I did get some insight at another interview I just attended. One of the students said that he also recently interviewed at Mount Sinai, and was told that while there were still acceptances to be given out here at the end, it is not proportionally correct. In other words, students who interviewed at the beginning had a statistically greater advantage than we will have. They must have filled their class faster than expected. But all I can say is it is what it is.

Yes but this is just how rolling admissions work in general. It's difficult to spread out acceptances proportionally over the course of the interview season. Schools have a better sense at the end of the season how many they need to interview per spot than at the beginning of the season. You are definitely not interviewing for a waitlist spot (meaning that Sinai hasn't completely filled their class already), just for the remaining acceptances that are left.
