Has anyone heard anything from the financial aid office after sending in your step 1 papers with respect to step 2? I sent everything in about a month ago and still not a peep.

How do we join the New York Medical College 2014 Facebook Network without an email?

Does anyone know if NYMC is still giving out interviews???

I don't think any schools are still sending out invites. Maybe a couple last minute ones will go out in the entire allopathic system from now until the 15th.

But this is just a guess, I could be wrong.

anyone from march interviews still waiting on a decision? I can't be the only one out there ...

I am still waiting for a response. I interviewed on the 18th. I know they sent out quite a few numbers of acceptances last week.

Interviewed 3/8, thought the interview went well but it landed me a rejection letter a couple of days ago. 29R MCAT, 3.96 GPA, 3.91 science GPA, 2 year HHMI funded research project on Alzheimer's with several publications, Honor's thesis with Summa Cum-Laude graduating status, and plenty of extra currics... wonder what happened...they must only accept a few from FL each cycle.
Goodluck to all still waiting to hear back, especially those from FL 😀

Sorry about that. There are quite a few Floridians here, but they're only going to hand out so many acceptances this late, especially since your MCAT is on the lower end. Are you accepted elsewhere? If you can squeeze a few more points out of that B.S. test, you'll have an easier time.

Does anyone know when the finaid packages will start coming?? =/ I hope it's before May 15th

They'll contact you if they need something -- I got an email about correcting a line on my FAFSA within a couple days of sending in my Step1 paperwork. I haven't heard back about any Step2 financial aid stuff... probably just keep a look out for Sozzo's email podcasts.

Unfortunately, no acceptances yet. I'm waitlisted at one school and on "high hold" lists or accepted/alternate" lists at 3 other schools, all in Fl. I'm hoping for some movement this cycle, wouldn't want to retake the MCAT, verbal was a nightmare for me 🙁

Ack this makes me nervous. I'm still waiting to hear post-interview, and your GPA could beat mine with one arm tied behind its back.

At my interview, the director(dean?) of admissions said that if you are invited for interview, they've looked at your stats and determined you are able to do the work, so now they're going to look at everything else. Does anyone know if this is the actual practice, or do they still take GPA/MCAT into account in consideration post-interview?

No matter where your go that is the common practice, however, I would be hard pressed to say that once they offer you an interview they NEVER look back at your stats...The fact is that you WERE offered an interview, so if an interviewee has relatively low stats the interview is a time to wow your interviewer and give them something to say when you name comes up to the adcoms that may overcome the fact that you might not have the best stats. Obviously it's not always so cut and dry, ie someone who has high stats and a mediocre interview may not get in and somebody with relatively low stats can have an amazing interview and may only snag a waitlist or a rejection, but thats just the way it goes. If I were you illegallysmooth, I would make sure I realize this is late in the cycle and be realistic in your expectations (ie don't just expect an acceptance because no matter who you are there is still like a 50/50 chance of being rejected after an interview) and be happy that you had an interview offer in the first place. Consider a waitlist a victory because, as many others have suggested, there is MASSIVE waitlist movement, specifically after May 15th for obvious reasons. I am definitely pulling for you guys and ill cross my fingers and hope that in the next couple weeks you hear some good news! GL

PS...I know how much of a pain in the ass the waiting game is as NYMC made me wait 10 wks before I got accepted and I had originally thought the interview went poorly so I was expecting a waitlist at best. Just try to occupy yourself with other things and try not to think TOO much about it because at this point it is out of your control.

Yeah, there's some sort of magic mix that each medical school is looking for, in terms of the proportion of different "types" of students in the class. That's why 7% of people with combo of >=39 MCAT and >=3.8 GPA don't get in anywhere. Meanwhile, about the same percentage (6.7%) DO get in with <= 20 MCAT and <= 1.99 GPA. (http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table24-mcatgpa-grid-3yrs-app-accpt.htm)

If you think about it, those are pretty astounding numbers and it really illustrates the point. A lot of it's just based on the magic mix - hence the crapshoot.

(this is why I link to AAMC's website on my signature)

I asked them this same question, and she gave me a flat no that they would not arrive before then. She also pointed out though that it would likely all be loans in any case.

Yeah expect financing through loans -- I remember from talking with Sozzo that they only award a handful (30-40?) 15k/yr scholarships based solely on need... and you'll need to include your parents tax return info if you want that consideration.

Finally got my rejection from here today. That only took like 8 months haha. Oh well I still have one waitlist I'm waiting on....

Well good luck everyone!

Rejection by e-mail also. I like how the sender is "mdadmit." should be "mdreject."

Big news today:

COLLEGE RECEIVES $3.25 MILLION GRANT TO DEVELOP BIOTECHNOLOGY CENTER

VALHALLA, N.Y., May 6, 2010 – New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins today announced the awarding of $3.25 million in State funding to support the development of the Hudson Valley Biotechnology Center for Disaster Medicine and Emerging Infections at New York Medical College. The initiative is expected to enhance the College's reputation as a regional resource in three areas of its greatest expertise and proven strength.
The funding, which comes from the state's Gen*NY*sis program, will be used to develop and enhance the physical infrastructure that will house the new center in a repurposed building acquired by the College in 2006. In the first phases of the program, the College will expand its acclaimed programs of emergency preparedness for disasters, terrorism and public health emergencies. The grant also calls for a clinical skills and simulation center, designed to utilize mannequins and other simulation technology to give medical students hands-on clinical training for a disaster response. The third goal of the grant provides for a Center for Emerging Infections, which will conduct multidisciplinary research programs to study and prepare for newly emerging or recurring infectious diseases.
Karl P. Adler, M.D., president and chief executive officer, said, "There has never been a better time to focus on the growth of biotechnology in the Hudson Valley region. New York Medical College has been contributing steadily to that growth through its 150-year-old tradition of research, education and public health. The new Center will bring together the best minds in disaster medicine, infectious diseases and public health, thus enabling the College to serve as a leading biotechnology resource in the region."

EDIT:

Those of you who don't know, this is a rather large building (123,000-square-feet) that NYMC purchased back in 2006, across from the Fire/EMT/police training center. It was formerly a cancer institute. They've been trying to figure out what to do with it for years, but needed grant money to renovate it. Finally!

Just sent off a letter of intent. Let's see if it helps! I'm simultaneously looking for a new job - the funding at my current lab position is expiring in a matter of months - because i have so outright acceptances, so I guess whether I attend depends on whether I get an ideal job offer or get into NYMC first!

I'm only slightly nervous.

BlueElmo and HammockUp, when were your interviews (if you don't mind sharing)?

🙁 Sorry to hear about the rejections. Were these rejections off the waitlist, or initial decisions after interview?

Edit: Okay, my bad. Were they all pre-interview?

just withdrew my acceptance...whoever gets it owes me a beer 🙂

I wish I had withdrawn before being rejected. Would make me feel slightly better, but then again, I was only slightly perturbed.

This sounds very interesting! When do you think the renovation will be complete and students will actually begin to reap the benefits?

No idea. They've been doing some work on the exterior of the building for some time now, though no one is allowed inside.

Need a decision this week, right? Anyone else as nervous as I am?

Haha well I certainly hope we get decisions this week. When did you interview? I know during my interview day (March) Robin Baum said we would know before May 15th but also some people on here said that if you interviewed in late April/May you might not hear until after May 15th, so from the last few release of decisions it would seem we will hear tomorrow if we get in and Wed if we get waitlisted (although it also seems everyone I interviewed with heard already so it's also a huge crapshoot maybe?)

Good luck all.

Does anyone know the date that we begin?

I talked to them... orientation starts August 2 and first day of class is August 6. Expect no news about financial aid until late May/June!!!

****ttt. They just emailed me asking for new grades. My spring grades aren't in yet and my fall grades were not great.

Ack.

Hey guys, I just withdrew from NYMC, I hope one of you SDNers get my spot, it was a good place and I liked it. Good luck to you guys:xf:

here's one more spot going back to the school! good luck to you guys!!

illegallysmooth and mzsciencefit, were you both on the waitlist?

So 3 days before the 5/15 deadline, after interviewing early march, i got an emailed letter of acceptance today, literally minutes ago. I'll be emailing them to let them know that I'm withdrawing, good luck everyone!

Gah. Waitlisted today via email. Interviewed 4/20.

I'm not going down without a fight! I have 3 additional LORs on the way. Hopefully this helps.

Interviewed March and still no decision, although they said when I called that I will hear before May 15th. So nervously waiting!
