Anyone interview with Dr. Andrew Powers and receive a response?

I'm under the impression that since they are handing out decisions corresponding to random interviews dates (and they are variable between acceptance/waitlist/rejection) that maybe it goes by interviewer? Any thoughts?

Interviewed March 24
Accepted this morning via email.
I really liked the school, and the people I met along the way. Any suggestions between Drexel and NYMC???
Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those waiting!

I am having to make the same decision. The schools seem so similar and they seem to have similar results, yet they are still so different.

I didn't have the best interview day at NYMC, but I am going back next weekend to take another look.

Anyone else here interview with Joan June from minority affairs? What did you think of your interview?

I interviewd with dr. andy powers also. in 3/11. i didnt hear anything yet but it went well so im still hoping for the best

Me too, re: dr. powers.

I thought it was unprofesional how he was not only 10mins late but asked me to wait once he got in for another 5 mins.

His was also the most formulaic interview I've ever been on.

I interviewed with Dr. Rachlin on 3/9 and got an email yesterday, hope this helps narrow down the people who may not have shown up to committee 🙂

Let me know how it goes and what you decide!

Can someone please clear this up...

I had a friend interview at Touro recently and at her interview the merger with NYMC was brought up. The Dean at Touro said that for the current 1st yrs and above (2nd, 3rd, and 4th yrs) nothing would change...but after that things could change in terms of Touro DOs and NYMC MDs doing things together.

If this is true, this would affect us (people who were accepted this cycle and hoping to start in Fall 2010).

I know I may sound like a jerk here...but personally, if I got into an MD I don't want the reputation of my school going down...especially while I am in my 4th year and trying to apply to residency programs because of this merger with a less than prestigious DO (I have nothing against DO Schools - I just feel as though Touro is not the most reputable). I really feel as though NYMC admissions should clear up what is really going on and let students who were accepted this year know so that we can make informed decisions before may 15th.

Please - if anyone has any information, I would love it if you could share.

Thank you.

Hmmm. I'm not sure how plausible this sounds. Can NYMC actually handle more students? Will NYMC students be going to Harlem for classes in the future? This is a very strange situation to be in and I think it shows how DO and MD aren't different enough to have a distinction (if true anyway). It's really hard to tell what the dean means.

i dont think he meant in terms of classes - that would be tooo weird. I'm assuming the dean meant in terms of 3rd/4th yr rotations...those would probably be merged (which isn't too implausible...i know PCOM kids rotate with temple, drexel, upenn kids).

personally i just feel like the merger itself is bringing down NYMC's reputation...mainly because Touro isn't the most "prestigious" DO school.

and i just want to know if the merger would affect class of 2014 and beyond.
i know they keep saying that class of 2013 will not be affected, but i haven't heard anything about us - people that were accepted for this year. you would think that we should be told SOMETHING before we make our decisions.

We're not merging with a DO school. We're being sponsored by a college that HAS DO schools.

It would make sense that we cooperate with a program that's only half an hour away, especially when they have Manhattan facilities, libraries, etc that we currently lack. The DO program has connections in NYC (but not Manhattan, I understand) that I'm sure NYMC students would love to snatch up, should rotating-sharing occur. It's a two-way street.

Call me naive, but I don't see a problem. Residency directors aren't dumb enough to turn away applicants from a competitive med school just because its new sponsor also has DO schools. That's ridiculous.

I'm sorry that the details aren't set in stone - I'm sure it's frustrating. But you can't expect them to release details that don't exist, or that haven't been finalized. If it was up to me, I'd wind down the DO program and turn those brand-new facilities into a Manhattan campus of NYMC. It seems logical - Who knows, maybe that's the goal.

But just because details are uncertain, doesn't mean people need to get all crazy. Doomsday crap. I saw it happen last year when the Touro negotiations were leaked, and I feel much of it is laughable now. We've been told that this deal will result in an infusion of resources into NYMC - not the other way around. We've been told that they're working on signing up more affiliates with NYMC - not the other way around. It's either the truth or it isn't the truth. But that's what we've been told.

You could ask administrators and even they wouldn't know. It's above them. And yeah, I've been asking.

First off, I want to reiterate that NYMC isn't merging with a DO school. It would be the same thing to say that NYMC is being taking over by Touro Law Shool, or their Nursing school, etc. It is the institution itself that is sponsoring NYMC and it would be foolish to believe that NYMC is merging with a DO school. Second of all it doesn't make sense to me that the dean of Touro-COM has more of an idea with whats going on with the NYMC situation than administrators at NYMC, even though no one at Touro-COM is actually involved with this. It just doesn't sound right to me. The people involved with changing hands from the Archdiocese to Touro are not also involved with Touro COM(what I mean is that administrators at Touro-COM have no involvement) so this wouldn't make much sense...In terms of reputation NYMC has a reputation that isn't all of the sudden going to change. They have been around for 150 years (its the sesquicentennial this year actually) and as Gplex said residency directors aren't just going to skip over you because we are no longer sponsored by the archdiocese of Westchester. Yes I know Touro doesn't have the best reputation and ideally a school like Fordham or St. Johns would have sponsored us but thats not how it turned out. As far as classes 2014 and beyond being affected, I couldn't see anything other than a positive effect based on the fact that you will be gaining key rotation sites and have potentially better facilities, research and resources. Call me biased if you would like, I take no offense, but I do feel the need to reassure those who are worried because it is my opinion that this is an irrational fear, at least that is what we have been led to believe.

I don't think I'm worried about this merger. NYMC's match list was really really impressive, and the fact that they give mini-boards as exams really prepare kids well I think--and in the end, that's what really matters, right? Kill your boards and you won't be held back by anything 🙂

You got your head on straight. I was under the impression that many schools administer mini-boards? Either way they are definitely helpful but unfortunately the 2 we have had so far I performed about 6-10 pts below how I was actually doing in the class so I hope thats not a bad sign! I only say that tongue in cheek though because I had already passed both classes and had no real opportunity to Honor so I kinda slacked off an didn't study too much.

Maybe..none of the other schools I interviewed at mentioned it, but NYMC students pointed it out during the tour so it stuck in my head. Anyway, it's a good thing, so great!

I'm sure you'll do just fantastic on the real thing :luck:

Dr. Moshman

I hope he made you laugh because he is my seminar leader for our IPC (introduction to primary care) course and he is absolutely hilarious. Plus he is heavily involved in the 3rd yr rotations and you will most likely spend a lot of time with him if you do a Medicine rotation at WMC.

I sent in an update/interest letter to [email protected] a couple of days ago. Is it like NYMC to not respond and tell you their office received your info? Most other schools acknowledge receiving something.

They do not respond to updates/LOI/thank yous, but you can call them and the person on the line will let you know if they were received. They've always been very nice to me on the phone.

I'm not sure they email, but they do make sure things get where they need to go. I sent them an update recently and called the next day to check on it. When I called, it had already been placed in my file.

He was a great interviewer, and we had a few laughs when he brought up the mets and I countered with the always superior Yankees.

Has anyone interviewed with Dr. Messina?

Can anyone comment on if he seems to fill out evals more promptly than

other interviewers??

any input would be greatly appreciated

Student perspective: Dr. Messina is one funny old man. He's been teaching at NYMC since the 70's, when it was still based in Manhattan. He teaches a lot of the cardio block (physiology) and his lectures are entertaining. However, his questions are purposefully tricky and he can actually be pretty serious (I hear he's a tough interviewer). I would say that he's well-liked as a professor, but not so much for the questions he writes. I believe he also does quite a bit of research.

Dr Powers told me the current students (MS1-4) will grad with "NYMC" degrees while we newcomers and forthcoming students will have degrees that make note of the Touro partnership. One of the student guides was pissed b/c he didn't know of the merger before coming and I think it's a due concern. Not to demean NYMC but think of the issue from both angles, don't just take the word of the two students here.

Dr Powers also rejected me today, oh well. Just wanted to see the result, wasn't intent on attending anyways. Best to all who do, as long as you know your material right?

Jman,

Your post is indeed consistant with what we've heard. NYMC isn't going anywhere, but Touro will "probably be added on at some point in the future." Whether or not that affects 2014, 2015, etc. we haven't gotten a definitive answer (Dr. Powers would not be definitive, in my opinion, as he's not in administration).

One bit of info that is somewhat new is how NYMC will refer to itself in correspondance. What I mean by that is, right now NYMC is "New York Medical College, a health sciences university in the Catholic tradition." The new reference will be "New York Medical College, a member of the Touro university system."

I think that expresses pretty well the way the partnership will be structured, again based on internal emails and forums with the president. NYMC stays separate, but will be a member of "the Touro family," as has been mentioned in the NYMC/Touro press releases.

Was your tour guide a second year student? My impression has been that people in the class of 2012 were shocked/furious about the news last year, as they had no idea it was coming. Those of us in 2013 - we knew about it during the admissions process (or at least it was out in the open). It's totally understandable that second-year opinions would be different than ours. People in the 3rd/4th year never seemed to care but then maybe I just didn't talk to the right ones. I guess they were far enough along that it didn't matter?

Anyway, that's my bit for the day.

Does NYMC use virtual microscopy or physical slides for Histology? Is lab attendance mandatory?

You get a slide-box at the beginning of Histo. Technically lab attendance is mandatory but you can miss 1 or 2 here or there as long as there isn't a quiz (which while there are no dates for these they come at predictable times like every other lab or something.

has anyone gotten in after interviewing with Dr. Wang? (from Pharmacology?) I had the weirdest experience interviewing with him, and I have a feeling that he doesn't justly assess his interviewees as another person might. Any ideas?

to those of us on the wait list... i was just wondering about sending letters of intent... does nymc like these or do they prefer not to be contacted?

I feel like it helped me when I applied 2 years ago, but I can never know for sure. I sent back my waitlist card with a pretty good letter, and they accepted me almost immediately thereafter.

So I always tell people that it never hurts to write one.

I believe I had to actually send back the postcard with a response. But that was 2 years ago. Maybe the process is more electronic now?

Rejected yesterday. 3/16 interview with Dr. Wang.

If you don't mind me asking, where in the country are you/what day was your rejection letter postmarked? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to say on here.
Thanks!

Anyone else here interview with Joan June from minority affairs? What did you think of your interview?

I interviewed with Dean June on 4/5. I was worried after my interview because I thought she wasn't very interested in the research I've been doing in the past year, which is what I really wanted to talk about. I was accepted on 4/30, though, so I guess I must have impressed her some other way! I'm so excited; I really loved the campus and the way things were run.

Thanks for your response! I interviewed on 4/20 and starting to get anxious already! I really loved the campus too.

Hi there,

NYMC Class of 2013 here.

I believe that the Touro merger will be good for us. More resources, more money.

Yeshiva sponsors Albert Einstein. The Catholic sponsored us for a long time. Now Touro is sponsoring us. It doesn't change anything - not the education, the curriculum, the boards scores or the match list (which are damn amazing). We are a small, private medical school with a close-knit community in a suburb that doesn't distract from studying with the most exciting city in the world close enough to still party like a rock star on the rare weekends that we can.

If anything, we'll be on more stable financial footing (since we don't have an undergrad to foot the bill) and have more options for rotations. The largest change will be that the ginormous nativity scene will be replaced by a ginormous menorah during the holidays.

I was here last year as an AMP student, so I've seen how both the Class of 2012 and 2013 have reacted to the Touro merger. '12 was angry, '13 doesn't care.

So there you have it.

Congrats to those that got in, and good luck to those on the wait list! Seeing the admissions process here for the last 2 years, I assure you that the wait list moves like mad after May 21st. (I interviewed on the last interview date available and a quarter of my group got in, so there's hope!)
