OSU seemed to just have a little extra shine to it that I have yet to see at any other program. There is definitely something in the air at OSU that you can't put your finger on - "sumthin' sumthin'" is probably the best way to put it. I'm very close to making the "official decision" to attend next year.

Finally,
got an invite from this school.
the interview is set on the 3rd of march though...kinda late even for an oos dont u think?

Hey guys,

as you go about making your med school decisions here's some food for thought:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=104541

it's still really relevant even after 5 years. a lot of what med schools try to sell you in the application process comes out as a wash. only thing I would add to it would be cost of attendance...otherwise it's one of the best posts ever.

Anyone deciding between OSU and another school?? I can't remember anything about the interviews or schools.. I think I blocked out all the painful memories haha 😳

The more I start to factor in the cost of attending medical school, especially private schools, the more attractive Ohio State looks with in-state tuition after the first year. It's a very high quality school with one of the cheapest costs of attending that I have seen for an out of state school. See you guys at second look.

Congrats to all those accepted! Good luck to deferred applicants - everything will work out in the end.

Agreed.

Haha you're right! I glanced at cases thread and it seems like a much more happening place. carving eggplants?! what?

I have a couple friends at case and they love it there. It's pretty different tho in terms of feel and I don't think I would have fit in there as well. It's true what they say...the med school that suits you the most will find you. I'll mention what little i know about case...i'm not bashing it by any means but I just want to contrast because i think it's a close call for a lot of people.

let me break OSU down for you:

what I like:
1. cheap- no.1, hands down, biggest reason to come here. You don't realize it when you are applying but money is a huge huge factor after graduation. it affects your choice in specialty, what you can do (global health when you have 200K in debt anyone?) and your lifestyle. by the time you are out of residency and in a position to pay off your debt, you want to be thinking more about spending your attending pay on a house for you family, cars and kids...not your debt.

at OSU you can get in state after a year and save 15K at least a year over most other schools. hey that's a 15K scholarship if you want to put another spin on it. If you are top 25% in the class at the end of each year you can get a extra 5000 dollar merit scholarship thrown in too. columbus is a cheap town.

2. anatomy is taught really well here. dr.dephillip, the division head...all he does is teach, or do research on teaching.

3. community feel. I don't feel like a number here at all. there are 220 of us, but we have a group of 12 called a learning community that meets with a doctor every month for dinner. he/she is kinda like a mentor/guide for you and helps make sure you aren't lost in the shuffle. Every month there is also a school wide Dean's dinner which is kinda like a town hall meeting with all the bigwigs so you can voice concerns. they usually bring someone in to talk as well.

4. tests every 3 weeks. I know Case has them at much longer intervals. personally i couldn't imagine that at all. there is so much material that my brain can't handle more than a months worth before exploding.

5. football (and being good at it)

6. lots of students=lots of interest groups=lots of free meals

7. there is an interdisciplinary global health program here. you take 14 credits your first two years in various global health classes. 4th year you do an away rotation abroad or even more if you want.

8. Big on ultrasound here. it's emphasized in anatomy and you can get some extra training throughout your four years. it's a big big plus when applying to certain residencies. OSU is only one of 3 schools in the country with something like this and I think the only one where you can get a rmds as well.

9. that little sumthin sumthin. I can't really put it into words...but when you are walking in the grassy area in front of the main hospital and it says "THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY" in big bold letters, all you can think is..."damn straight"

what I don't like:

1. CAPs- kinda like the practice in medicine, you know history taking, physical exam. coming in i thought great idea! in practice they have it regularly for 3 hours every week. I feel like it's a waste of time and really breaks up the flow of the day/week. and it's hard to focus on it when you have a test coming up so often. would prefer if they did something like at michigan where it is all compacted into one week chunks.

2. lectures- once anatomy was over i realized how great the lecturers were. the Cell block lecturers...let's just say some are excellent and others don't suit my style. I'm only a first year so maybe it gets better.:xf: I don't go to lecture anymore and podcast the lectures i know are good. Can't say that this is a problem that only OSU has though. Also I know that all Case lectures are mandatory attendance and only if you are sick can you access the podcast.

3. They hit you hard with the coursework as soon as you get here. I know at Case they ease you in with some of the more nebulous topics in medicine like ethics etc. Which is why school for them starts in July. That is pretty awesome actually because the class gets to party together for a whole month and I think they are a little closer as a class then OSU is.

4. you don't get your own assigned carrel like at case (unless you are ISP)......i'm a little bitter over this.

what I'm ambivalent about:

1. If you have a family or just study better on your own, there is the whole independent study program thing here. It's great for those who want to do it...i'm sure you heard it on interview day a whole lot. You probably won't see these people that much anymore haha.

2. senior partner's project- pair you up with a geriatric patient and you develop a relationship over 2 years with them. has not started so can't really comment.

3. OSU is shooting up the rankings. It was 40 something not too long ago. 27 this year vs 25 for case. considering that OSU just decided to spend 1 billion dollars on a new hospital i think it'll hit top 20 pretty soon. but then again...only your mom really cares about this thing. residency directors don't. and you definitely don't after you get in.

Wow, thanks.

just withdrew post interview, decided on wake forest. hope this helps someone who'd love to go here.

I'm interviewing there on Wednesday, I've been reading through this thread but I'm having a hard time finding definite information on the interview. What's the format like? How long, and is it high/low stress, from those who have been there? This is my third interview overall and my second in Ohio, I have a third Ohio interview coming up at Toledo (but if I'm accepted elsewhere I might withdraw). Ohio is very kind to OOS, my fingers are crossed... 🙂

have you looked at the interview feedback tab all the way at the top of the page. I think the reviews there were pretty specific.

but the interview was pretty low stress, if you are out of state have a convincing reason why you would go to Ohio state and not a school in your state. i think the point of this is to prove that this is not just a safety school.

very low stress and conversational, just want to get to know you as a person and some of your motives

It's a nice interview. My interviewers were all nice, I mean most medical school interviews are pretty low-stress, and this one was no different. Good luck!

To be honest, I haven't had any stressful interviews whatsoever. I'm starting to think that being grilled in an interview is just one big myth.

Trust me, it is not a myth. While some neurotic gunners may be exaggerating, many people, myself included, have had stressful interviews that didn't come off as conversational. There is a difference between a bad interview and a stressful interview. I have had bad interviews. However, I have also been "grilled" with rapid-fire questions and openly objected to on subjective, ethical questions in rude ways that created a hostile environment. Granted this was only at one school out of the many I interviewed at, it still does happen. Consider yourself lucky you haven't experienced this type of interviewer yet.

My interview at tOSU was actually the most I've ever been grilled and questioned about my application. It was probably also the most stressful. Not saying it was bad or anything, just more intense than any of the other schools I've interviewed at.

My OSU interview was equally stressing due to all the grilling. It was my first one too, so I was still a little inexperienced. In some of my later interviews at other schools, I actually was grilled again on the same exact pts as at OSU, so by then I was prepared with responses and didn't feel as stressed by the situation.

well I obviously can't speak for anyone else, but most people I talked to would agree OSU is very stress free, at least they try to make it that way...now if you had other schools grill you on the same points then I think you might have a different definition of "grillin"

Got the call from Dr. Capers tonight!

would you mind sharing when you interviewed? i interviewed last week and am hoping to find out about their decision early, before the "10 business days" like they say

and congrats by the way!

I agree. OSU was by far my least stressful interview. I would add though that, in my opinion, the individual interviewer you get is a more important predictor of your stress level than is the school at which you interview. While schools may have general guidelines, interviewers usually interview based upon their own personal style.

And when I say I was "grilled", I mean that I feel I was "grilled" in a rude way that I felt wasn't fair to me as an applicant and took advantage of the interview-interviewee relationship. Asking tough questions and raising objections to your application or your answer to a question in a non-confrontational, reasonable way is NOT grilling! It is testing you as an applicant. Medical schools will be investing thousands of dollars in you as a student, and if they want to see how you react under pressure, so be it.

If you are confident in your application and you know yourself, you should actually look at these interviews as a way to show you can preform under pressure. I personally enjoy being challenged in interviews if done in a fair, respectful way.

This is true..sometimes I feel it's just the luck of the draw. However it's been my experience that some schools have "go to" interviewers for the must have candidates so their interviews are more consistent/friendly. They're almost recruiters instead of interviewers.

On the flip side there was one school I interviewed really really late last year where the interviewer flat out told me he had been chosen for me because he was tough and I had something to prove to get one of the last few spots of the season. he wasn't so much tough as out in left field at times...he asked me how he could test my integrity...and the answer he was looking for was "facebook".

I interviewed on Nov 23rd and found out on Dec. 7th.

First post!!
I was accepted to OSU on Monday! I screamed and cried a little when I got the call!

Hey guys need your advice.

I was recently waitlisted and I have written my letter. Should I email it to the Admissions office addressed to Dean Capers? I could also send it directly to Dean Capers himself, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate.

I sent mine to the admissions office website. They'll place it in the file for you, so that should be fine.

I have an interview on Feb 3. A few weeks ago I received a call just to say hi and welcome for my interview. I thought this was strange. Nice but totally unexpected. Do they call all?

Yeah, the dean calls you to congratulate on your interview.

I guess they don't like me, I never got a call and my interview has been scheduled for over a month.

It was more than a month after I had heard about my interview that I got the call...I am sure you will get a call. When is your interview? Also...interesting username ha

It's not until 1/20, so I still have quite a bit of time. Yeah, my username is a long story, but I like it for its uniqueness. 😉

Has anybody heard anything about this? I remember getting an email about it, but I was thinking they'd want a FAFSA first.

I think merit-based aid comes before FAFSA. I heard that they start calling mid December, which would be... now!
