Hey do you guys know how an out of stater goes about getting instate tuition here after one year. I was thinking about going back to Minnesota for research after my first year of med school if i attend here.

I believe the financial aid office helps students with this, so you might want to call them. If you go to the Class of 2014 thread in the allopathic subforum, they also had a recent discussion about this. I do know that a few of my friends wanted to go back out of state for research during the summer between 1st and 2nd years and that this was going to be problematic in terms of gaining in-state tuition for 2nd year. I don't remember how it worked out, but I think they ended up having to stay in Ohio. Again, a good reason to call financial aid and ask. They're very helpful and should be able to answer that question pretty easily.

Supposedly it's pretty easy and consists of getting a driver's license, registering to vote, and spending money from Ohio.

haha, very funny. anybody have any legit answers to my question

i dont think he's joking. you actually need to register to vote, etc in Ohio as well as prove financial independence to be considered an ohio resident.

He's pretty much correct. The main thing is you need to show that you have enough income from your own sources to cover your expenses. This can be money in an account in your name you have saved up or money you get from student loans. Basically, you must prove that you are financially independent on paper. Most students will just use student loans and a little saved money to cover their first year cost of attendance since no one really has a sufficient income to cover it without borrowing.

Proud to be a Buckeye! Rosebowl champs baby! 😍

I have an interview here on 1/20, but I haven't gotten a call from them, apparently they do that. Should I be worried? I have gotten an email from a student, so maybe they just contact interviewees by different methods? Anyone know anything about this?🙄

I never got called or got an email for interview so no worries

Finally, Big Ten can hold its head high, I suppose.

This may seem like a strange question, but I remember someone saying that they take your picture when you show up even though the interview invite asks you to bring a wallet-size photo. What's the latest word on that?

No, no need. Just bring a passport sized photo and you're fine.

Yeah, and if you forget to bring a photo, they either take a photo of you or ask for an ID so they can photocopy the picture off of it

I have a question... Will I have enough time to catch a 7 p.m. flight out of Columbus immediately after the interview?

One important thing to note is that you can't use any money you made out of state one year prior to matriculating. You can only use savings from at least one year before.

In other words if you are making money in a job this year outside of Ohio, you can't use it during the first year. You can always save it for the second year though after you get residency.

whoa, really? how do they keep track of this? what about using money that was given to you by parents/relatives (who don't live in OH) to help pay for tuition or living expenses?

You have to fill out a form detailing all your expenses for a year and those shouldn't exceed your OH income (i.e. your student loan+jobs/research grants). You can't accept money from relatives or parents because the idea is that you are self-sufficient. If you are still receiving money from them then you should still be a resident of the state that they are in as opposed to OH. They can still buy you gifts and plane tickets and what not i think. Of course they can give you cash under the table. But that is an honesty+integrity issue.

To check they'll ask to see bank statements to make sure you had the money a year prior to matriculation. Make sure your bank account is completely in your name and not shared because that could throw a monkey wrench in things.

Overall though it's a very easy process to go through and I wouldn't worry about it tooooo much.

The best way to avoid this might be to open an account at an Ohio bank, wouldn't you say? That way you don't have to close any joint accounts, but you'll have an account you can use for proving that you had the money. I guess the thing to figure out is what to do about the money from an ancient account that still has your parents' name on it. Can it be transferred to the new account?

Can you elaborate on this a little more? This doesn't quite make sense to me. If I have a full-time job right now, I can't use any money I've saved up while I'm a first-year med student in OH next year? I have to rely completely on loans, etc.?

But you just said they'll ask to see bank statements a year prior to matriculation to make sure we have the money. This seems contradictory - why would we have to prove to have the money if we can't spend any of it???

Does anyone remember what they said about the deferred-decision pending status at the interview? I remember they said something about movement in Dec/Jan? But, now, I can't remember if that was at another school? Any other information about the status would be greatly appreciated!!!! Would love to end up at OSU.

I don't remember too well either. I would like an answer to this as well.

I'm sorry! I realize my wording was not quite clear. You can use money that you had one year prior to matriculating. However if you made money outside of OH in the one year period before you matriculate, that money is not eligible to be used when determining your residency status.

From the website:

http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourweb/more//content/residency/FAQ_New.htm#22

What types of income sources are not eligible for helping me establish in-state residency?

The following are examples of income sources that would not be viewed as eligible from a residency standpoint:

Support from individuals who are not residents of Ohio
PLUS loan money because these types of loans are taken out by the student's parents
Personal loans (Loans not from a financial institution)
Loans with a co-borrower
Savings that have not been in an account in your name for at least one year prior to the beginning of your residency review period
Financial aid that required you to be a resident of another state in order to receive it
Credit card debt.

anyone know when classes start for summer planning purposes? i couldn't figure out how to change the calendar on the COM site, and i'm pretty sure they have a diff calendar from the main OSU one.

I remember last year orientation started 2nd week of august, but I am not 100% sure. (its very diff from main one which starts 2nd to last week of Sept)

Any scholarship news?

This might be a strange question, but what kind of scholarships are offered at OSU? Full tuition? Full ride?

Not that I'm expecting any, but it'd be helpful to know. I may withdraw soon 🙁 I loved OSU, so it's going to be sad.

If I remember correctly, max amount of merit aid is in-state tuition (~$30000). Max amount for need based is ~$6000. Each year, the top 15% of the class gets some money. Otherwise, you're looking at private scholarships and federal grants. I'm quite smitten with OSU myself but I'm going to have to see how financial aid treats me.

I sent mine to the admissions office website. They'll place it in the file for you, so that should be fine.

This might be a stupid question, but what email address did you send it to?

There's no form or email on the Applicant Status page to send interest/update letters to. The only email address I can find is medicine@osu, which is the address they use to send us the Status Change emails. Should I just send it there? Anyone know?

The email from where they sent you the secondary application. I sent it to [email protected].

👍 super helpful! thanks!

Just interviewed here yesterday. This school is amaazing! And they give you a free computer bag👍👍👍😀😀! T-minus 9 Business days and counting.....

I am interviewing here soon and I am so excited! Any suggestions of things I should definitely check out while I am there? I have some time to kill between the interview and my flight.

How long does it usually take the student hosting program to get back in touch with you? Also, does it cost anything to stay with a student host?

i think it took maybe a week tops? it probably depends on if it's exam time (which it might not as it's just after break).

it's free, but i think it's nice to give them a gift card for their generosity.

I'd recommend just walking around the greater campus and getting a feel for the place. There's a pretty, open grassy area (I can't think of what it's called) and a pond that students apparently jump in after football games 🙄

The oval and mirror lake (which is frozen solid currently)

I'll have to check that out, thanks! Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way to get from campus to the airport than a cab?

it took about a week for me to get a student host, so not too long. I think a gift card would be nice to give them but I don't know what kind yet... Still gotta figure that out.

And more snow-covered than grassy at the moment, as well.

As for things to do - are you looking for walking distance or will you have a rental car? If you want to get an overall view of the campus, you can hop on the Campus Bus (which is free) and ride it around campus. They all go in loops, so you can easily end up back where you started. I haven't been there yet, but the Main Library is newly renovated and supposed to be absolutely beautiful. The Rec facility is awesome, as well, and I think they might let you in to take a look at it. If you want to explore some neighborhoods, the Short North and Grandview are both nice areas with some unique shops/restaurants/etc. I highly recommend a stop at Jeni's Ice Cream (shops in both the short north and grandview) - Expensive but well worth it.

My friends in Columbus took me to Jeni's during my interview trip to OSU. For you lactose intolerant ppl out there, I highly recommend the pear sorbet...it has a touch of white wine in it and tastes REALLY good. 🙂
