at my upstate interview i was told that it snows in syracuse more than buffalo b/c of the great lake effect (lake freezes near buffalo but not near syracuse)
also, i just called and was told NO ACTION means your application has yet to be reviewed. hurry up, buffalo!

Are you serious? But I was complete since July, they had four freaking months to look at my app?!?!

Does anyone know how far into 2010 interviews are being scheduled now? Ugh. Look at my app please!

they make it clear that the date submitted has no bearing on your application, so I don't know what exactly their strategy is for interview invites.

The school interviews well into April. I know a lot of students in the class got accepted from the waitlist. They really do hold slots open until the very last interviews are done. The waiting sucks, but in the end, it's actually a pretty fair policy.

You and me both.... I can't believe they haven't looked at them yet. I just assumed I was on hold.

I had to avoid facepalming when some interviewees at Upstate starting talking about how they avoided applying to Buffalo because of how often it snows there.

that's what the receptionist said, so i'm taking her word for it.

I e-mailed James Rosso, the admissions councelor, two months ago about what NO ACTION meant. Here's his response:

"Your application has not been reviewed. It can be reviewed by our Committee anytime between now and March 31st. "Time" is a non-factor in our decision making process. Best regards.

Mr. Rosso"

Hopefully they get on it soon. I'm in the mood for some Mighty Taco.

This is total conjecture from checking out the stats posted by people on here who've been accepted/interviewed already so take it with MANY grains of salt but based on reading a lot of the posts on here it looks like they review apps/interview in order of MCAT score or GPA or some combination of the two as I recall reading a post about people with MCATs in the high 20s being interviewed in the spring of last interview season and it would seem that those accepted already had higher stats than Buffalo's average.
I wouldn't take that to heart but it's just my two cents (maybe me trying to justify why I haven't been reviewed yet ...)
I'm sure Mr. Rosso would give you the same answer as he gave the above poster if anyone called, but if you want more information I would tell anyone to not hesitate to call him since he picks up his phone and seems super nice at least when I called.

buff (as we new yorkers call it), claims to review each application in its entirety and does not screen based on GPA or MCAT. seeing as how they generally don't receive that many applications compared to other schools, it is possible. i have also heard that they do not have a traditional rolling admissions process. i know someone who was accepted off of the wait list from buffalo some time in june for fall 2009, so they take their time.

soooo don't worry if it says no action or if you haven't heard back yet

I just got an invite today for Jan 13th.

Rosso/Severin said he doesn't take only MCATs into account. He said they aren't robotic, excluding applicants based solely on a test score. Real people review each application, including letters and EC's and so they take a lot into consideration before sending an interview invite.

The people up there are fantastically friendly. I can't wait to hear from them (I hope).

EDIT (NEXT DAY): THANK YOU SO MUCH Dr. Severin/Rosso/Laychock/Knight (I know you read this thread)! UB Class of 2014!!

I know quite a bit about what's going on in Buffalo right now. They're basically building a half billion dollar campus downtown right now specifically for the medical school and medical sciences. They're hoping to become the best SUNY school and eventually among the best medical schools in the country. These are really ambitious plans, but unlike the other SUNY schools which seem to be stuck in limbo, the college of medicine at Buffalo is affiliated with a decent size university center, has already sunk a huge amount of money into their school, and plans to dump that additional half a billion freaking dollars into it.

There are heavy rumors that the admissions board is mainly looking at numbers when considering applications. Obviously they need to keep the number of students up, so the average of past years still applies, but they're definitely catering to the best of the best medical applicants right now.

Another waitlist-er here. Had the interview on 11/18, and found out the following day. This is random but offensiveline were you at the interview on 11/18 too?

Offensiveline and Yankeedoc, you were probably there with me!

Yes I was there on 11/18, I got wait listed the next day...

I think it is good news though, almost two thirds of the wait list seems to get in from the looks of past years.

well my confidence is officially shot. well not really lol but you get what i mean. i have a 3.9/36s and was rejected straight away. which means two things:

i must have said something that SEVERELY turned them off, without noticing it (because I felt the interviews went well)

they must have decided the personality I displayed simply didn't fit the school.

i swear i'm not a douche, so hopefully they just weren't on my wavelength or something. Either that or I'm doing something terrible without even noticing it, which scares the poopy out of me. My second interview is tomorrow at downstate.... hopefully this will go better.

but i've never been in this sticky of a situation before. It's like, I failed miserably, but am not being told why I failed (i asked them for post denial feedback but they didn't get back to me), and I'm not really that sure why i failed.

Should these ambitious plans influence my decision to go to Buffalo. Right now I like it and have put down a deposit, but I am still considering my options. I also really liked Stonybrook so if I get in there it will be a tough choice. Should I pick UB because of their expansion? Anyone have any thoughts on why or why not UB (vs the other SUNYs and/or other private schools)?

StonyB is really arrogant, I feel, unjustifiably so. They behave like they are great because they have the "cream of the crop" but that's mostly because these kids are geniuses who were rejected from Cold Spring Harbor for grad work.

Even for undergrad, I received scholarships to all the schools I applied to except Stony.

If you read their little mission stmnt before filling out the secondary, they have such attitude.

UB on the other hand is AMAZINGLY friendly and they really watch your back. The Roswell Pk Cancer Inst is a national leader in its field and the only reason I'd choose SB over UB is the distance from NYC.

I don't know about med school, but I had quite the opposite experience in undergrad. Stony brook wound up being the school that offered me the most scholarship out of all the schools I applied to. Also, they seemed quite friendly telling you high as you walked by and holding the door for you, etc. The only kids that seemed arrogant were the ones for whom english is a second language, and even there they likely didn't say high not because they were stuck up but because they couldn't speak well/didn't speak much in general. I chose to go to UB undergrad because at stony brook all the NYC kids go home on weekends and the campus is practically deserted then.

I don't know why the med school would be more stuck up over having an mcat 2 pts higher then UB or avg gpa 0.1 point higher.

In terms of the two schools, academics at both are very comparable (stony brooks profs are of a bit higher caliber/more renown). I feel like UB Medical is much more like high school- everyone is very close and hangs out with each other all the time because there is not much to do in Buffalo versus Stony Brook where NYC is just a train ride away. So it's just personal preference. Personally, I want to concertrate on studying not rumors and gossip and drama (I have heard many stories from ub med kids). Also, having NYC near by is a great way to unwind on weekends and is also a good way to enjoy the final days of your youth before residency sucks out your life. On the flip side, if you want that ultra-intimate virtually family kind of feel, i would go UB.

I'm not quite sure the location comparison is so easy.

For me SB would be a 45 min car ride from my home, so I could go home on the weekends. UB would be a 1 hr plane ride or an 8hr car ride from home.

It did seem to me that Buffalo itself has better nightlife than SB. Port Jeff is nice but its only good for a few hours of browsing stores. Buffalo has a city with a downtown section.

However, in terms of going to the city, you cannot drive to Manhattan unless you want a parking ticket. And the train likely takes 1 hr (you have to transfer in Jamaica - Queens). Is it really worth using NYC as a reason to go to SB. I don't think so.

Are you joking?
Flying for 1 hour each way is not comparable to taking a train for 1 hour into the city. A typical med student can't afford that.

As per night life, I wish I had been able to see more, I'm just worried Buffalo will be a nowhere town. I'd love to stay in the city and I'm hoping I'll be able to (cross fingers) but no matter where I go, I would miss the homey, family like atmosphere at UB that I believe makes the stresses of med school easier to cope with, as opposed to lots of NYC schools that are slightly more cutthroat.

Here's hoping.

The location of SB being a 1 hr train ride vs a 1 hr plane ride is a plus for SB and a minus for UB - however I have been able to find great fares so the 1 hr plane ride really isn't that expensive. Anyways, I don't plan on going home a lot no matter where I go - just for major holidays.

Basically I am asking whats better: Buffalo has a nightlife conveniently located fairly close to the school, but it doesn't compare to NYC. SB has NYC but it's not located very close to the school (in my opinion the 1 hr train ride is enough of a hassle that you won't go to the city 2 nights a week), and there really isn't much to do right by SB.

Basically I'm saying that I don't believe that the location of SB vs UB should be such a major deciding factor for most students.

BUFFALO pleeeaaase I'm here and waiting and can't take this "NO ACTION" anymore 🙄 (complete 9/23)

Seriously. I've been NO ACTION-ing since mid August. :lame:

That stinks (I'm there with you too). Almost as much as the fact that our snowless streak might end tonight with 1-2 inches, it's a dusting but STILL.

Sorry for the tangent😳😳

Submitted in June - almost half a year with No Action 😳

I was NO ACTION even until the day I walked in for my interview.
A while back I was curious and called them up, that's when they invited me.
"Oh yeah, we like you, come up?"

I think most people have been no-actioning for a long time. Complete July and have been at that status for 6 months!!

I just wish if schools didn't want you, they would reject you right away instead of stringing us along.

Where do you go to check status? I received an email late Aug. saying I've paid and they have received all my information, but I'm looking through emails to see where I can check status and don't see anything...😕

Does anyone know if Buffalo considers letters of interest?

Really love this school, just got waitlisted.

I should actually try this 🙂 That would be megacool to call them one morning and them to say, "come on up."

Maybe they're just seeing if we're really serious about the school. I never call though because I figure that would piss them off. I'm going to make an exception though.

^ Yea, do it just don't sound impatient or desperate. Play it cool.

When you called them, did you say that you want to check your status?

Yes actually, but real smoothly and whatnot.. I was like "So...I'm not sure if NO AC means I'm complete...do you mind checking?" Ms Albrecht was mad friendly.

Now I suppose it'd be pretty easy to discern why people in your position would be calling so I dunno if she'd be stressed. Good luck!

This school had the nicest rejection letter I've ever seen. And a they actually signed it. by hand! im in already at other schools but gosh now im dissapointed.

Just wondering did you status happen to change on the status page as well? Or did you just receive a letter out of the blue?
Thanks

Finally interview invite! Complete early July. About time, I'd say.

First interview invite! Complete Mid-October. January 27th anyone?

Congrats on new interview invites!!! How did u find out?

Nice to know they are finally looking at July people. Congrats.

BlueElmo, did you happen to send a letter of interest/ update?

Nope no letter. I think maybe they are coming back to re-review all the apps now that the accepted people are turning down acceptances. I could be wrong, of course.

I was under the impression that an acceptance/waitlist/rejection is based solely on your interview, that each interviewer assigns a score of 1-5 and they get averaged together.1=acceptance, 2=high WL 3= mid WL 4= Low WL 5= "non accept."

Is this true? Does anyone know?

I never checked this schools status page so I don't know if it cahnged before or after I got the letter but it is now "non-accept".
