According to last years forum the last date to know was by March 30th, and people heard on the 10th. It also said that they heard on the 10th the previous year as well. Everyone seemed to find out on the same day however.

hmm, ok. thanks for the info. this waiting thing is like slowly pulling teeth... without knowing if your going to get ice cream as a redemption afterwards.

ok, bad joke. sorry. lol.

I feel you, but at least I don't have to check the page everyday like i do for other schools. Some structure in this process is nice, but yea man, Anxiety is a killer right now.

I definitely agree with you on that one. I feel pretty decent about my chances at acceptance, but a waitlist spot would just be awful. Just more waiting..👎

Of course if I get waitlisted I hope it is the waitlist of years past, and not last years.. yikes...

Yea man. The waitlist would suck - Carver is my best prospect right now.

I hear ya, I feel decent about my chances too, I'm basically the average student they accepted last year. But who knows who things will turn out. I'm just hoping I get a single digit waitlist spot. Trying to keep my expectations reasonable.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the average student from last year too. I'm hoping that since the OOS kids are geniuses that the average IS kid's stats are actually a little lower, which would make me an above average ISer. But I have absolutely zero proof for that, its just more hoping...

I'm an accepted ISer, and I'm probably withdrawing from Iowa in the next month or so, depending on how financial aid works out. Hopefully you can have my spot. :luck:

Haha I agree with your reasoning. After all Iowa's website said that the average mcat score is only 9's and 10's in each section anyway.

You gonna take Michigan up on that acceptance Stein?

You gonna take Michigan up on that acceptance Stein?

I'd hoping to. I need to see financial aid offers before I make anything official though. OOS tuition can be rough without some help. :scared:

HerkyMD, do you know when you found out you were accepted last year? Our stats are pretty comparable and I was trying to figure out if I'd be pushed to the final applicant pool or if it was possible I'd be accepted in the rolling cycle.

Sorry for the drastically delayed response. I haven't been to SDN in awhile. I dunno how helpful this is NOW but I got in with the first acceptances on October 18th, 2008. I am in-state as well so that helped my case I'm sure.

Probably gonna get rejected. My interview was the worst probably here.

So far I'm deferred though.

Thanks for the response. I'm hoping that being from Iowa will be enough to put me over the edge because I'm only an average applicant for Iowa according to the MSAR.

I'm wondering how they look at the final pool applicants- do you think its completely random in that set, or by date interviewed; I doubt they consider all applicants side by side in the final pool, right? that'd be impractical - or maybe they have their ways. Anyone have any clue?

So is the final release date March 10th? Can they just let us know NOW?!

I think the date is "no later than" march 20th. But the past 2 years they were told end of march and found out on the 10th.

haha that thread made me laugh, "Go to Michigan cause its close to big cities like chicago (4-5 hours)" while only its 3.5 hours tops to chicago from IC.
Unless you count a ferry, jk jk lol

Yeah, I don't understand arguments for schools that involve visiting places 3+ hours away... how often are you really going to make that drive during all of med school? Once or twice maybe? Perhaps in the summer, but then you'd have enough time to make whatever length of drive you want... dunno, there are much better reasons to attend Michigan than its proximity to Chicago. And Iowa, for that matter.

After receiving the email last week regarding the laptop requirement for next year, I decided to call Carver. The person I talked to said that this new laptop program is pretty much mandatory. Unfortunately, my current laptop is fairly old, and I hope that I don't have to buy another laptop between now and August.

Dear Students:

The Carver College of Medicine is instituting a new laptop computer program for our incoming class this fall. We are notifying all admits that this program includes the purchase of a specific Dell laptop, and this cost has been added to our Cost of Attendance. Our IT staff will be loading specific programs onto these laptops to give you access to many necessary programs as well as programs our current students find helpful in their studies.

Specific cost and purchasing information will be forthcoming. We will contact you as soon as details become available.

They also don't know exactly which Dell model it will be.

dang. at least it's in the COA. It's too bad though considering I bought a new Dell a little over a year ago. Too bad it couldn't be some cut little netbook that's much more portable.

I have it on good authority that the final pool is a side by side comparison of several key factors that go beyond your GPA, MCAT, etc. Mainly factors that have shown a prominent correlation between personal preferences and ability to be a successful doctor. The factors are as follows:
Favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
Strength of your high school mascot
Whether you have an innie or and outie belly button
Favorite Lady Gaga song
Favorite movie trilogy
If you prefer House M.D. or Scrubs
and lack or absence of a sense of humor
The sum of your scores on these areas go towards your Vodou index. Everyone who receives a certain score or higher will be invited to UI for a beer pong tournament where the top 75 people gain admission to the university.

Ha ha, I burned my laptop (I guess the mother board was burned due to overheat) two weeks ago and I just ordered a new dell during president day sale, bummer...

Haha solid answers! good to some other premed students with humor. We should have no problem getting in
I would have to say
1) Raph
2) Cyclones (but I want it to be known that they are much different from those found in Ames)
3) innie
4) starstruck (its got a sick beat)
5) LOTR
6) House

And as far as beer pong goes, I've had my fair share of practice!

This is the PERFECT way thing to distract me from thinking about med school while still looking at SDN. Thank you so much.

Based on this criteria my hopes have sky-rocketed:
Michelangelo. Nunchakus beat all. End of story.
This may be my weakness. I was a very un-PC "Indian"...
Innie (but not hugely innie)
This is actually a trick question. Lady Gaga sucks.
Also a trick question. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Indiana Jones hold a three-way tie for first.
Scrubs, FTW. Who needs realism on TV?
I chose Scrubs, so my humor hopefully shines through naturally.

My Vodou score should be plenty high...its my lack of beer pong skills that worry me...

On a serious note: did everyone receive this Dell e-mail? Or just admitted students?

This makes me realize I was wrong initially. Splinter is the correct answer to question number 1. My Vodou score takes another hit... 🙁

Haha don't forget about April O'Neil.

We're slowly but surely all going crazy, aren't we? Well, about 2 weeks away now...

so my bf is doing a grad school visit at Iowa the weekend of the 5th and I'm prob going with him. I thought he'd be going later so if I got in I could look at apartments and such. Now I'm probably going the week before we find out and I'm really hoping i don't go, love it more, start looking at apartments and then get rejected 2 days later. That'd sting a little.

I'm a little put off by the mandatory laptop, its a fairly significant investment (although nothing compared to med school costs) and I normally have specific tastes when it comes to computers. But I suppose medical students aren't smart enough to pick their own computers ha.

I'd guess that they would get a pretty powerful computer, since they'll probably want us to have it all four years. I'd also hope they can get them pretty cheap, since it should be an order of 150 laptops. Mine from undergrad is starting to bite the dust, so hopefully it can hang on another few months.

I figured Iowa would be able to get them cheap, but who knows if that means we will get them cheap. We'll see, lets get accepted first.

Hey everyone,

Withdrawing today so there is going to be a spot opening up. I just can't attend a school that makes technology choices for me. (just kidding).

Anyway, good luck to everyone - I loved it there but unfortunately it just won't work out financially.

Yea it kinda sucks to have to get a new laptop if you already have one, but just think of it like having a work computer and a home computer. At least they're adding it into financial aid so it's not like you gotta buy a $1000 laptop on your own. Just think of it as them "giving" you a new laptop considering you'd never really know the difference if they added into your fees or w/e. I've heard of other schools requiring iPhones which is weirder sounding to me than a laptop.
They're probably doing it so people won't have compatibility issues pc vs mac or w/e. So they KNOW you can access content you need. PLus they're loading it up with things you need and things the previous med students have found helpful so that's free software that in theory should actually be beneficial!

If I may ask, are you and IS or an OOS?

I agree, red10, I thought all the software would be the coolest part of the whole deal.

Do you guys know what is the number of seats filled prior to march 10th?
