So based on what I've read I have a sneaking suspicion that the odds are stacked in my favor, HOWEVER not sure that that will stop me from melting down. I guess with all of this preparation I've probably built it up to be more terrifying than it actually is. Wish me luck!![/QUOTE]

I interviewed on 9/30/09. The day was really long, and I was the first one done at 3:30. That being said, after being in the building for several hours and talking to people from UofI by the time the interview came around I wasn't nervous at all (some people still were nervous though however). The case based learning activity was fun and it gave me a chance to realize how much I actually knew about medicine. Just make sure you don't dominate the conversation or act too shy, as they are observing you.

Is the interview day at Iowa really THAT stressful? I have been on multiple interviews, and I didn't feel stressed at all. Is there something about Iowa that adds to the stress?

It's not super stressful but it has been the most stressful one I've been on thus far (my 7th). It's because it's just very unnatural. They are 2 on 1 interviews and they are required to ask 3 question that they ask everyone, and the interviewers are instructed to not respond in any way at all to your answers. No smile. No "ok great". No head nod. Nothing. It's very awkward and weird in that respect.

That said, everyone else there for the interview day was very personable and nice.

Good luck to everyone applying this cycle! I applied last year and got accepted and I deferred a year, so those of you starting at Carver next fall, I'll be there with ya. GO HAWKS!!!

Does anyone know how much it costs to get from the airport to the school, and is it cash only like the website says? Thanks

I didn't think it was stressful at all, If you're a confident person you'll do great. Sure the people who interview you don't give feedback, but they were at least smiling during my interview.

HerkyMD, do you know when you found out you were accepted last year? Our stats are pretty comparable and I was trying to figure out if I'd be pushed to the final applicant pool or if it was possible I'd be accepted in the rolling cycle.

Don't take a cab! It's like $70. You can get a shuttle for $30-35 from the cedar rapids airport. I'm almost positive you can pay with a credit card too, but you should probably call the airport to double check.

Predictions on when the first acceptances will be handed out?

I'll say October 19th.

The ad com meets tomorrow. The first ones should be handed out on the 15th.

does anyone know how often they meet? My interview is next week...hoping not to get sent to the final applicant pool:xf:. For anyone that already interviewed, did they mention if you would be notified if you were in the final applicant pool or do you just have to wait?

I'm interviewing next week too, and I'd also like to know this!

I was told that they meet weekly, but were recently taking a couple weeks off. I believe they've resumed this week, but I'm not sure if they'll notify us as to which pool we're in.

I don't think you hear back on whether you're in the final pool for quite awhile (like months). If anyone knows for sure, feel free to chime in. Let's just hope they take us all during rolling admissions, and we won't have to worry about it!

I asked this question at my interview. They said that they won't tell you if you're pushed to the final applicant pool. If you don't hear back in 4-6 weeks then plan on hearing back in March. If you search the studentdoctornetwork forums for the 2008-2009 Iowa thread, you can find a lot of good general information. For example, I found out that they will tell you if they have reviewed or not yet your file if you call them. So if they've reviewed it, and you don't have a letter yet, you can assume you've been put in the final applicant pool.

The interview structure isn't as bad as some feedback makes it seem. Definitely nothing to worry about. Was my first interview and didn't feel awkward at all.

At my interview, they said that they would be meeting every Tuesday starting next week. If I remember correctly, they said that they get through about 10 applications each meeting.

Ten people a week seems pretty low, if they met every week, and did ten people a week then it would take about 40 weeks to get through 400 applicants.

DrYack,

Since most applicants will be considered part of the regular applicant pool, about 10 applications a week seems plausible for the rolling admissions phase.

That does sound slow though.

well...at least they meet every week. Some schools only meet once a month

Thanks saltykracker that makes more sense, but kind of discouraging at the same time. If they're only going to look at a few stellar people during the rolling phase then what does the committee even have to talk about haha. Guess I should convince myself that I won't hear till March.

ummm im starting to wonder whats up - I had my secondary complete on 8/25 and still havnt heard back even for an interview... shouldnt i have gotten an interview invite or rejection by now?

nope

Anybody know if the ad com meets tomorrow or are they off again since they met last week? Last year the first people were accepted on Tuesday the 21st of October.

any acceptances go out today? any other news about the adcom or when emails will be sent?

nothing here yet...

Nothing here yet either. I thought for sure some letters would go out today. Guess we'll be waiting another week now. I'm a little surprised that Iowa isn't more on the ball about getting letters out though.

what is the notification process?

is there a status change for acceptance or do we have to wait for snail?

Last year applicants were emailed, and then an acceptance packet was mailed out the same day.

oh ok...I interview tomorrow, did you interview recently or in September? I know last year I think they told applicants 4-6 weeks but some heard sooner others much later (but before the final applicant pool).

I interviewed 9/30. The admissions recruiter told me 4-6 weeks as well. She also mentioned that if I didn't hear in 4-6 it could be 2-3 months (still before the final pool) or finally in March. I appreciate that they are so specific on when we will hear back 😛. That being said I saw on the forums from last year that someone heard back in as soon as two weeks, but of course that person was a rock star applicant.

congrats and good luck (they must really like you 👍 that's super quick)! when did you schedule for?

I'll be there Friday too! Can't wait to meet you. How many interviewees are there each day?

there were 12 the friday i went. They split you in half for the PBL session (half do it while half interview, then switch), so it was pretty manageable. Tours were groups of 4. The only time you're together is for the big talks.

That's great, I dig the small size.

Did anyone stay at the Heartland Inn? I'm wondering about this free shuttle service...

yep, I did. It's kind of a noisy hotel, the doors slam really loud, but decent other than that. The shuttle is a great service--pick it up at the hotel in the morning, leave your car there if you have one, and they give you a card with a number to call to have them pick you up and bring you back. It goes right to MERF if you ask them to.

Got an acceptance e-mail this morning! 😀 Go Hawks!

Congrats!!

I guess they letting the ballers in first 😉

Still waiting to hear after a Sept. interview, i am suspecting final pool

Come on homestate! Show me some loooooove

Interviewed here today and it was awesome! I do have one question though, why have I seen on here some people saying that Iowa is pass/fail? Everything I saw on the interview day was like honors, near honors, pass, or fail.

They like to say that it is pass/fail but really its honors, near honors, pass, fail (aka A,B,C,F).

I interviewed on Wednesday really great school w/ tons of great programs and opportunities for research. I think I remember hearing them say that honors was around 10 or 15% and near honors was a little underneath that. Oh well...p/f would be nice but regardless I think the school was pretty amazing. I definitely got the community feel that they are going for and everyone was extremely friendly/kind/helpful and overall just really proud to be associated with the institution.

I'm really hoping the med school doesn't get hit too hard by the recent state budget cuts, the Iowa Regents universities in general are getting cut across the board, but I guess everyone's suffering at this point. 🙁

Yeah, hopefully not. The financial aid representative mentioned that students receive 30% on average in scholarships and grants (although they do want to know your parents tax information and income to be considered for their scholarships). Hopefully funds won't disappear too drastically over the next few years. She also mentioned that they were considering getting rid of the perkins loan program which would undoubtedly suck...sadly attending here as oos is about the same if not cheaper than attending my state school though 😕/😱 (yay illinois 👍). Attending medical school is just ridiculously expensive all around though...I guess the price we pay to pursue our passion.
