Haha, same here, rescheduled for 9/25. I'm excited, I really like Iowa City. 👍

Interview invite!! OOS, complete 7/22 feelin' the OOS love

Interview invite! Yaaaaayyy!!!!!😀

I am so elated, superpsyched. Got interview invite today. 9/21 interview. Go Hawks!

Looks like all invites so far are in-state or nearby state (where is LabGirl from?)

Interview invite today. God is great!!!

Congrats! Either that or you worked hard to get yourself to this point, and should be thanking yourself and those who support you for your success. 👍

Interview invite today! I am OOS from a neighboring state. They do give you quite a few options which is nice because a few fell during very big test weeks for me, so I think I am going to do early October. Good luck to all!

Does anyone know how long it took them to invite you for an interview after you submitted your secondary app. I submitted mine around 9/1/09

Good luck on the interviews everyone. Its more intimidating than most on the surface but not so terrible. I do recommend looking at the interview feedback as I don't think anyone received a novel question in last years interviews.

looking at matt4788's stats, it appears that right now the invites are for instate, and OOS with very high stats 🙂

i am in a neighboring state but don't have the super high stats . . . i just hope they keep me in the running so i can get an interview once they're done inviting all the 35/3.9's. if you believe in the LizzyM score than i think i might be competitive but realistically i guess the OOSers probably have higher average stats than IS

Hope I get one from here in the near future.:xf:

Turn around was about 10 days by the way. Submitted on 9/4/09, interview letter 9/14/09. Interviewing on 9/23/09.

I had the same submit/interview invite dates. I'm interviewing way later though, there weren't many Fridays available and that's my favorite interview day.

I'm OOS from a neighboring state.

I'm wondering if Iowa's OOS statistics are a bit misleading, and most/all of those matriculants are form neighboring states. But I guess its too early in the cycle to start calling those kind of shots.

Interview invite over here.I don't know about this neighboring states thingy 'cos I'm from NY.

how do you know this?

don't get me wrong, i'd like it to be true since i am in a neighboring state. i just never heard it before.

although i guess it makes sense because it seems like people wouldn't want to live in iowa unless they lived nearby and knew it's not as bad as it sounds 🙂

Oh snap! Interview invite :meanie:

Feeling the OOS love, 34R, 3.85+ish.

oh my goodness, you applied to so many schools. did i count right (61?) haha. its cool though i'd have applied to more too if i weren't so broke. it's really interesting though, your experience seems to prove just how random the process really is (rejected from Tulane and Nebraska and invites at Sinai and Duke?!) well, not necessarily random per se, but obviously about a lot more than stats. congrats on all your interviews, and especially your Iowa interview . . . I'd love to have one myself . . .

Interviewed on Friday. I thought it went pretty well. The interview itself really wasn't that bad, and the interviewers were not too intimidating. The case-based learning activity was actually fun, and not stressful at all (although mine was after the interview, so that may have helped). Overall, it was an exciting day. Try to relax!

Hehe thanks 🙂 You don't need to worry though. I've never heard of anyone with a 36 not getting in. Duke and sinai were just flukes 😛

Don't sell yourself short! 😀 there must have been something on the app they liked.

I have a slightly random question. When I log into my secondary and open the "interview" section, my web browser tab says "Admissions Secondary: MSTP Application". For all of the other sections, the tab just says "UI COM Secondary..."

I applied regular MD, and nowhere in the interview invite does it say anything about MSTP. I called the admissions office to double-check but they had no idea what I was talking about. Does this happen for anyone else?

(I'm using Firefox, btw)

No. You could call them up.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd give some brief impressions about the school as I interviewed here just recently:

Overview of day:
- Hear a few presentations on the school, financial aid, curriculum etc.
- Get lunch and tour the med school and hospital
- Do a sample case-based learning trial headed by an M4 (note: you will NOT be judged on your medical knowledge, so don't try to learn internal medicine between now and your medical invite)
- Interviews (standardized portion consists of three questions presented to all candidates, meant to maintain objectivity, and then there is an unstandardized portion consisting of whatever questions come up.....interview is only like 30 minutes)

Programs: These guys have some great programs, ranging from specialized tracks (service, teaching or research) to global electives to academic exchange programs (do international rotations). Also, their medical communities program is really helpful and fun from what I have heard. I was really impressed with the variety of programs. BTW, their counseling office is fantastic (study groups, get to check out books for free so you don't have to buy a textbook just to peruse it for a few days)

Curriculum: Program is mostly traditional (about 4 hrs of lecture a day, some small lecture once a week and CBL once a week for M1). I can't confirm with the grading, but I have heard that though they have honor/near honor/pass/fail, they only report pass/fail and don't rank their students. Either way, it doesn't seem very competitive. Curriculum is non-systems based (first year is basic sciences like biochem, anatomy, mol. biol, clinical sciences etc.) Only distinctive part of curriculum is that, esp. in 2nd year, you spend a ton of time doing clinical sciences, and its no surprise that these guys graduate pretty well-prepared for the nitty-gritty of residency.

Location: Iowa City is a really cool place to live. The schools is within walking distance (There are also buses) with the undergrad campus, and they also have the ped mall (restaurants, coffee shops, etc..really chill place). You can walk or bike anywhere and not worry about being safe. The apartments are NICE AND CHEAP. Cost of Living is low here, and I like it. Watch out for the winters though....I won't lie, the winters scare me. And if they don't scare you a little bit, then you might be fooling yourself. Otherwise, it's a great collegetown with quite a bit to offer, esp. for walkers and bikers.

People: The people here were fantastic. From fellow interviewees to the faculty to med students, everybody here loves it. The med students here unequivocally, almost holistically enjoy this school. The communities program contributes a lot to this, in my opinion. Really, the people here are great.

Facilities: Best part of the whole damn tour. The facilities are FANTASTIC. The MERF (Medical Education and Research Facility) is just breathtaking, and every community (there are four of them) gets a multi-level lounge. The hospital is very cushy (they have a player's piano in the lobby, seriously) and well-organized (arranged almost like concentric circles, where you can tour the outside of the hospital without running into/exposing patients). Also, they are building a Diabetes Research Center to be complete in 2014 (will open before that though). Seriously, these facilities are amazing and easily the best part of the school. You'll be awe-struck.

As you can see, I really liked my interview day. I'm posting this because positive impressions of Iowa led me to apply there, and this is my way of passing on the information. This is a great school, not for everyone, esp. those who can't stand bitter winters and don't like collegetowns, but it really is great nonetheless.

Hope this helps and best of luck to all of you,
-Dr. P.

lol. posts like this are such a tease . . . i don't wanna know how great a school is yet! it will just make me that more sad if i don't get in!!! iowa is absolutely one of my top choices . . . perhaps my #1, for all those reasons you stated. but as an OOS with borderline stats, well, as I tell my parents it would be a miracle if I got in. (For some reason they really want me to go there too.)

i do like how they have the option to add updates. i think by the end of this semester i will have some really good stuff to add, so as long as they don't reject me before Christmas I might still have a tiny shot. 😀

Just interviewed and I would say that all the negative comments about the structured portion and lack of feedback are not true, at least for me. It seemed to flow well and puts everyone on the same page. Then there was plenty of unstructured interviewing where we discussed all sorts of things from ethics to stress to family. The CBL was awesome, I look forward to this in MedSchool.

I agree with you marylennox...I'm hoping I a. get an interview before christmas or b. can update with lots of good stuff throughout the semester before getting rejected lol. I'm oos w/ borderline stats as well...

The more and more I hear about Iowa the more I reaaally hope they give me a chance at an interview. It sounds like a great school that has lots of good opportunities and facilities. Not to mention its pretty close to my home in IL

so they haven't started handing out invites to OOS students right? Just Iowa and nearby state kids?

I know a fellow AZ applicant with an interview here, but I am still waiting. I don't know why they don't like me.

Hey anyone that's had interviews so far, can you post some of the questions they asked?

Because they know you've already given your heart to Mayo.

😱 How did they find out? Just kidding, even if I was accepted to Mayo, I would still be interested in Iowa, and at this point I only had an interview at Mayo (which is just a really expensive rejection until I hear otherwise).

Yup . . . Iowa is actually the closest school to where I am from even though I am an IL resident. so we may be from the same area . . . i took my MCAT in Bettendorf IA 🙂

I almost hate to ask this question, but is there a chance that the interview day will be done before 5? I have a buddy driving me and the last flight to the east coast leaves a little after 7. I'm flying out of Quad City and the only reason I'm cutting it close is because I have to work the next day.
