I also have around 10 years of experience living in this state. I know ppl will not accept criticism of the school/state bc they are set on going here by this point but this is the opinion of my family, many of my friends, and myself. Seriously though, the school is a respectable program but it just seems everyone here is hypocritical and self-righteous. Not to mention, there is no reason to live in this God-forsaken wasteland of a state if there are warmer options.

Bring on your rebuttals.

Why are you picking this thread to go off in? Let people have their happiness. Maybe you'd be better off going to find yours.

At the risk if sounding condescending or annoying I just wanted to wish everyone good luck! I'm thinking about you all today.

Dude, fall back. Obviously we're all incredibly frustrated with this process. But most of us here probably wouldn't be so neurotic if we didn't generally really like Iowa. You're clearly entitled to your angry soapbox ranting, but you've probably chosen your audience poorly.

People in Iowa are saints compared to people in NY and New England. you obviously have a myopic and biased view. The typical person walking down the street in the tri-state metropolitan area is suspect.

I like that we still are clinging to hope that we will find out today or tomorrow even after they told us we wouldn't hear back 'till next week. Still, it won't stop me from checking my email every afternoon this week.

Would you believe that I will not be attending the University of Iowa, yet I still choose to defend this state and this incredibly strong and supportive program?

What exactly is hypocritical and self-righteous about UIowa? I don't even understand where you're coming from. Please explain. 😕

Ha--I completely agree. Here is how I have rationalized the obsessive email checking: I figure they told us we will hear either way by March 20th. They also stated we would hear via snail mail. In my experience, businesses usually allow about 10 days for mail to reach intended recipients. Therefore, I have decided Iowa will mail accept/reject/waitlist info on the 10th. Further, in years past, accepted students have been notified via email the same day letters are sent. I hope you like this rationalization. I also hope so badly that it ends up being correct!!!

And to the future doctor clearly unhappy with Iowa: I actually hope you are accepted and matriculate to Iowa. Perhaps then you will have the opportunity to replace your sterotypes with something closer to the truth after you have more personal interactions with Iowans. I also hope you do not stereotype your future patients in the same way you have chosen to stereotype the entire population of this state.

Wow. Well said. 👍

does anyone know, if you are OOS and put on the alternate list at Iowa, what your chances are? How far through the alt list do they go usually for OOSer's? ...just trying to get a feel for what's in store for when we do hear something!

what's the alternate list? is that just a waitlist?

Yeah, same thing as a waitlist... all the schools call it something different so maybe at Iowa it is technically a "waitlist"

looks like nobody got an email today....

I hope by this time tomorrow we are all celebrating! :highfive:

Yea let's hope tomorrow is the lucky day, today has sucked thus far.

Nothing here either. I thought it would be tomorrow originally; if not, all bets are off.

Okay I hate to start the speculation train again, but I'm confused. So the email says definitely before the 20th, and next week is their spring break. So if we don't get them this week we're assuming they're going to be sending out decisions during the Iowa spring break?

Good question. But I like dalemarie's logic a few posts up. If they emailed acceptances tomorrow, they could send letters for everyone tomorrow or by the end of the week. We'd receive the snail mail by next week (before the 20th) and no work for the adcom over spring break.

Yeah, desperately hoping dalemarie is right! I guess I was just trying to figure out what any alternative scenarios could be in anticipation of being possibly let down tomorrow.

I couldnt open the forum from work because its blocked. But i kept checking my email and until 5 min ago (when i checked the forum) I thought I was rejected.

my heart just skipped a beat when I read the word rejected :scared:

I swore I wouldn't check this thread until i knew my status, but of course I've cheated a couple times. And I couldn't resist looking today to see if i had actually been waitlisted/rejected or if they hadn't sent things out. I'm so relieved no one else got any news.

Here's hoping for tomorrow:xf:

I have had 10 years of experience in this state. That is enough to know that I personally do not enjoy it. I know most you of love the state and the University and I knew many of you would be shocked and offended at my comments. However, I never implied that you all should take my viewpoint like the quoted poster. Obviously not all the people in the state are as I described because I have made many good friends here. However, after living in the South and here both for around 10 years each. I can make generalizations on the population, weather, and general system as I see them. And trust me, when I was in the South I was accustomed to generalizations.

This being said Iowa was my top choice at the beginning of the cycle and after many other interviews/acceptances and some deep consideration of previous experiences, I stand by my previous inflammatory post because it is indeed how I feel.

However, I wish you all luck as one man's proverbial trash is always another man's proverbial treasure.

Given ur views on Iowa, why did you even apply to UI, why you would want to endure another 4yrs of the weather, people etc?

More importantly, your generalizations come across as IGNORANT and IMMATURE!! Iowans, like any other group of people, are not monolithic and thus you cant make these ridiculous broad statements without sounding like narrow-minded, intolerant and bitter. I've lived in Africa, Europe, Florida and Texas and traveled even more widely. You simply can't generalize with people, we are too complex and too diverse.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you're even posting here. If we want your advice/opinion, we'll seek you out. Otherwise, obviously no one here agrees with your POV, so your continued posts about how much Iowa sucks are serving no purpose except to make you feel better/superior somehow. :beat:move along now

on a lighter note, i heard verizon might get the Iphone in june 👍

Obviously neither of you read my supplementary message in its entirety and feel entitled to dismiss my opinon as that of an inexperienced crazy person. You may disagree with my opinion which is fine, but if you are going to refute my argument please make sure you get your facts right.

Poster one asked why I even applied to Iowa. If he would have read my message, I said that it was my top choice in the beginning of the cycle before I came to my own personal realization about iowa.

Poster two said that criticising Iowa must make me feel "better/superior somehow". If the poster would have read previously, he would have learned that my comment was stimulated by the crooked application system utilized by Carver, not to criticize those who are applying to it or who are already there. I have the utmost respect for my fellow medical applicants and in no way intended to criticize them. My beef is with the school and those running it.

If you wish to critique my arguments please do so. Do not direct your attacks at me.

Well ur gripes seemed tp be leveled at Iowans as opposed to Carver personel. I don't have an issue with u being dissatisfied with the application process. I just believe its wrong to castigate a whole group of people, that's all.

Is there a facebook page for the class of 2014 or for second look?

Let's go, Day. Be a good one.

haha so some of my friends call me Day so when i read your comment at first I was like huh? how am I not being good? hahaha i'm a genius.

If no one receives acceptances today, the decisions won't likely come out for another couple of weeks. Since they are sending it through snail mail I'd guess a lot of people would find out on a Wednesday or Thursday.

How good is it ranked compared to Ohio state univ or Univ of Cincinnati?

Does it add value to the degree?? i.e., will a MD degree from UI hold good credentials?

thanks

If that is your primary concern, that information is easily accessible on US News's website. Ultimately, you will need to decide for yourself the quality and fit of the school based on your own goals and interests. My impression of Iowa is that it is a very good school with plenty of research and service opportunities, and the staff/faculty cares for the students. I am not sure what you mean by "adding value" to the MD degree. It is my understanding that you make your own opportunities in medicine, and your competitiveness will depend on your own work ie grades, scores, letters, etc.

I called again, letters get mailed tomorrow. If they are still sending emails for acceptances the same as past years, you should get an email today if you were accepted. Good luck guys

When it comes to "degree rankings" there are a few things you should realize. I am finishing my orthopedic residency now. I did not go to a "top tier" medical school. However, I did very well on my boards, worked my ass off on rotations, treated the staff at the hospital well, and succeeded in my endeavors for residency and fellowship. Don't get caught up in "who is the best" and who "ranks the best." First thing first, get in to a school. Next, work your ass off and do well on your boards. Few residencies would care if you went to Iowa or Ohio State or Univ of Cincinnati. What they care about are your boards, your class rank, and most importantly, can I trust this person at 1 AM when they get a call from a nurse about one of my patients. Thats it. That is what I tell every student that rotates on our service.

If any of you are wondering why I am on this thread, my youngest brother is hoping to hear from Iowa today and I am as excited and nervous as he is. Good luck to you all in your endeavors.

Oh man. Just got really nervous. Thanks Hawks for all your good work!

Last year looks like people were getting e-mails around 5pm central...
