Yay, got my secondary today! Kinda shocked because I'm a reapplicant and OOS, and last year I received a snail-mail rejection dated the same day they received my AMCAS...wonder what I did differently this year? Anyone know if this means I now have the same odds as an IS applicant for an interview? Or am I still up against that giant WWAMI wall?

i'm happy for you =)

I'm an incoming MS-1 at UWSOM and I here is what i understand the college system to be:

First off, you get randomly assigned to a college. Within the college you are assigned to a physician mentor/advisor. The physician only has about 5-7 students they advise for each class, so you get to know them really well. They stick with you through your entire education, and I believe they also teach your Intro to Clinical Medicine class where you learn the hands on stuff during the first two years. It is a great way to make the super large school feel smaller, and more personal. It is not unheard of for your mentor from the college to write you a letter for residencies and help you through that app process

Wow, that sounds wonderful! Thanks! So you're automatically placed into this "mentorship" program? Is it in any way unique from other mentorship programs?

i am still waiting on the AK WWAMI office to verify my residency...this is rediculous I sent them all of the info the first day i could! (which was like a month and a half ago!)

i got an notification of application from UWSOM on 6/29, and haven't heard anything since. called the admissions office and they said hopefully i'll know something in a week or two.

time to be patient

is anyone else still waiting like this?

2 members of the admissions committee independently review your MCAT's and grades, read your personal statement and secondary statement and then decided to invite for an interview. If one says "invite" and one says "reject" or "not ready yet", then a 3rd AdCom person reviews the application and makes the decision to invite or not.

As mentioned on last year's postings, UW highly values shadowing or other sustained health care experiences that demonstrate that the applicant knows what they are getting into. Nothing worse than a student deciding to quit after the 1st year.

Out of state applicants are basically competing against the Washington resident pool because the WAMI states select only in-home state residents.

All of you people out there complaining about residency verification...

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!! It is driving me nuts, as it was one of the most irritating things to fill out, and now I heard that the Montana residency verification person isn't even looking at them yet, and won't until Sept. or later. Oh well.

On the plus side, I worked for the Montana WWAMI director this summer, and he gave me some interview pointers if I ever get to that point. He said that once you get an interview, they put away all of your other application materials and it is just your interview from there. He said that the most important things for you to know are as follows:

1. Know about the school. You should know why you want to go there, the curriculum setup, maybe a little history, but especially why you are applying.
2. Know the healthcare topics. This is a much harder one, because it feels like it changes daily. You should know the major healthcare "fixes" that are up in Congress, and the pros and cons of each. He did tell me that you don't need to have a particular opinion, you just need to have facts to support whatever you decide. He told me that it is even okay to not have an opinion, maybe even better, but you still need to know the issues backwards and forwards.

I hope I get an invite back! It is hard enough to pay for med school, and MT students really only have UW if we want to go for as cheap as possible.

Hi all,

Can OOSers (non-WWAMI) apply to the TRUST program? Thanks.

Hi all,

Can OOSers (non-WWAMI) apply to the TRUST program? Thanks.

When I filled out the secondary it really looked like only WWAMI applicants could apply, and even then, only those from Washington and Montana. You might want to call the admissions office to be sure though.

for the course requirements, why is there room for 8 entries on the Social Sciences or Humanities section when the maximum you would need to input is 4 semesters or 6 quarters? should we fill all 8 of them if we have courses to do so?

TRUST is only in for Montana and Washington residents at this time. This fall is the first group of WA students doing TRUST, and they are all starting in Spokane. I was told that the program will be expanding (and that it's highly politicized, so it is part PR / part pilot program) and hopefully accommodate other states and urban (eg Seattle) WWAMI sites also.

Would someone please post the exact prompt for this year? It is a little unclear from the posts what it is exactly.

Thanks

Can someone PM me the secondary essay prompts so I can update it on the first post? Thanks

Come on purple and gold. Show me the love, please!

I submitted the primary on July 24th and it got verified a week ago. I was hoping that UW would send me the secondary as soon as that would happen but so far nothing...

I have a 34 on the MCAT and am a Washington resident...I don't understand why they haven't responded yet...

Any advice on what I should do now? 😕

So, I'm not sure if the first prompt is both for first year applicants and reapplicants...this was the prompt for the secondary I got this year.

Based on your experiences, how are you now prepared to be a physician? Limit 250 words

From your most recent previous application until now, how have you strengthened your application?

For TRUST program:
Please describe why you desire to participate in this program, what is/are your specialty choice/s, and where you would like to practice

Are reapplicants given the option of writing an autobiographical statement as well?

Nope. Just the two other quick essays. There is a couple more you can write if you are applying for the TRUST program as well, but they're optional otherwise.

I am STILL waiting on my residency verification...it is so frustrating!

Hey it took me a week to get the secondary after verification. So you should get it any day now. Nice stats.

I am a re-applicant. I submitted the autobiographical statement addendum along with three other essays:

the other personal comments/publications
how my experience has prepared me
the re-applicant question

I'm not a reapplicant but I have a question. Did you change your personal statement for AMCAS very much?

I changed it totally as well. I grew up in rural Washington and used the space to harp on how difficult it was to visit a doctor and how I really want to live/ practice medicine in the rural northwest. I felt like my AMCAS PS didn't get this point across well enough.

It really is optional though from what the adcom told me.

Yeah, completely.

Why?

Oh just curious since I know a few people who are reapplicants and were having trouble re-writing their personal statements since they felt like it expressed life changing moments and their reason for pursing medicine, etc. quite well. In any case, I've heard different adcoms say that they have your old application as well and will see if you were lazy and used the same PS.

So good job on changing it! 👍

Looks U. Washington not friendly to OOS except MSTP, which is federal NIH funded...:

The Admissions Committee for the University of Washington School of Medicine has completed its preliminary review of your application. As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the regular medical school program. We thank you for your interest in our School of Medicine.

If, however, you have applied to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), your application may still be under consideration. If you are planning a career in medical research, and have not applied to the MSTP, please visit the program website below for further information.

http://www.mstp.washington.edu/

Selection is national in scope and is NOT restricted to residents of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana or Idaho. The MSTP is extremely competitive for highly qualified applicants. A specialized program, the MSTP typically takes 8 years to complete.

All correspondence concerning the MSTP should be directed to the MSTP office at:

Yeah, well, UW is financed by the taxpayers of Washington, so of course they prefer in state except to diversify the class, in which case OOS with awesome stats will be looked at. Other WWAMI states don't consider OOS applicants AT ALL.

Finally complete! They finally got my residency verification (which I turned into my state in JUNE...crazy...)

Complete! Really hoping I'll be considered for the MT Trust program, it looks like a really unique opportunity.

I am a reapplicant and I definitely changed up my PS a bit. Initially, I thought last year's PS was good, but a lot happens in one year, and I feel like that needs to be reflected on the PS. Plus, I don't want to look lazy.

I would encourage you to rewrite a bit of it, just to reflect on new insights and challenges you have faced in the past year. Or else, it doesn't look like you have learned anything new or have been challenged in new ways.

Just my opinion though of course...

Hey,

Does anyone happen to know:

Of the people interviewed, how many are actually accepted? Is it possible to get this kind of data? 🙂

does anyone know when they start sending out interviews here?

Check the LizzyM spreadsheet.
I don't have access to it, but off the top of my head I think it's something like ~700 Wa residents interviewed for ~100-120 spots. Total I think was in the 160's, with the remaining spots going to other WWAMI people.

Edit: Eh. I was close:

Total interviewed: 917
Residents interviewed: 761

I don't think they publish their "accepted" number, and the spreadsheet only lists matriculants;
Residents: 195 (Pretty sure this ~120 Wa residents + the rest of WWAMI)
OOS: 21 (Incl. MD/PhD)

sorry oneMCATAway. When were you complete? Did you receive notification via e-mail? I'm rooting for you!! :xf::xf::luck::luck:

OneMCATAway, I haven't even gotten a secondary yet. Just like UCSF

I assume they just don't waste the time to even look.

Yeah, honestly don't feel bad about this one AT ALL. It's way, way tough for oos people to even get a look at UW (unless you're MSTP, then the field's pretty much level for everyone, I think)

Anyway, at least you've gotten a rejection. Pretty sure that beats being led along with false hope for months and months...

Thanks for the support guys! i know i had a little chance as an oos just getting that secondary got my hopes up a bit! anyway i was complete on the 13th even though i submitted everything about 2 weeks before that! good luck to all of you who are still in the running :luck:

Don't lose hope, I think getting a secondary certainly counts for something at this school. I think this school (like the Uc's) is a big deal to get one as an OOS

does anyone know when they start sending out interviews here?

Oct. 1, according to the "complete" email - (for WA residents only; interview weeks for residents of the other WWAMI states aren't until next year - January through March)

Yeah...speaking of that complete email...does anyone have any idea how that info applies to OOS applicants? Cuz it was all pretty clear for IS and WWAMI applicants when they should start expecting interview invites, but for us unfortunate OOS, it said nothing. Really, it should just say "Out of state applicants should not expect to be offered an interview..." Does anyone know, for those lucky chosen ones, when OOS applicants interview?

I would call the office for a definitive answer (the ppl who work there are very nice), but I believe that out of region (non-WWAMI) applicants who are invited to interview have their interviews when the WA interviewees do...ie., throughout the interview season

I think this is right also based on last year's thread. Most IS / OOS applicants heard something about a month after completion (unless they completed really early... it seemed like invites started mid-September regardless of submitting a secondary in early summer). It seems odd that WWAMI applicants outside Washington have to wait until 2010 to interview, but I guess that is up to the peripheral schools (e.g. U of Alaska, etc.)

got an invite by email today, totally excited. Complete early August.

I'll be keeping a watchful (and hopeful) eye on my inbox!

From the UW Secondary web-page:

Wyoming early regional interviews held in Laramie: January 19 - 21, 2010.

Idaho interviews held in Boise January 4-7, 2010.
Doesn't say anything about Alaska or Montana residents.
