memedimonkey: thank you for the insinuation, but no, I would say my stats are about average for accepted applicants.

seaboi79 Awesome! We're classmates.

CrimsonMirage 1) Cool profile name, very intriguing. 2) I'm very grateful to be a first time applicant.

No, I never got a phone call. I was randomly looking at my status page late Tuesday night when I discovered the acceptance.

which status page? the site where we completed our secondaries?

congrats!

Congrats to the both of you!

I am anxiously awaiting my status as well! I wasn't sure when they would be sending out responses after the interview! But it looks like they have!

I interviewed on 10/21 ... no feedback yet, I don't think

Just received an interview invite and I'm beyond thrilled. I was complete 10/8.

Has anyone had any luck with modifying your interview date? The scheduled day would work but would require me to miss several classes and a lab.

Also, I'm unclear about the course requirements. Does UW require a specific class in genetics and cell bio/physio or just that those topics were covered in our biology/biochemistry courses?

Update: The very helpful interview scheduler returned my call and gave me a spot on the day I requested.

Genetics and cell bio recommended but not required

just letting people know, who are curious. They are letting people know...

rejected today, post-interview. Fell into a "not ready" category..

What types of updates are good to send to help keep the "heat alive"?

I heard it's good to send updates about new activities you completed (especially if you mentioned them in your application)...so if you said you would study abroad or publish a paper during this year, then you could send them a rec from the study abroad program or an abstract of your paper...

Those two are the major "updates" I can think of. 👍 Good luck!

Sorry to hear that 🙁 Are they sending emails?
👍 Good luck with your other apps!!!

Yep. They sent me an email with title SOMAS!

SOMAS sound like a tasty ice cream sandwich if you ask me.

I'm wondering what the average age of students are upon enrollment, and what percentage are reapplicants. Not like I'm thinking about reapplying again....... 😛

Yeah, the status page where the secondary information is. I got the official emailed acceptance offer today! 🙂

I had my UWSOM interview recently and wanted to send courtesy thank you cards to my interviewers. How do I submit them? Should I just hand them in to the front office and ask the receptionist to deliver it to their boxes? or is there a more appropriate way to do it?

Usually what I do is mail them to the admissions office with the interviewers name in the first line...but if you wanted to drop them off I am sure that would be fine too

It says on their website that thank you notes would not help nor hurt your application for admission if you decide to send one (or not). With that being said, I mailed a letter to the A-300 office thanking them for the interview experience. I don't think I could go without sending at least something.

Congrats!! That's really exciting! Wow...quick turn-around! Does this mean they had another excom meeting already? My friend and I interviewed on 11/2 and now I officially feel permission to begin freaking out on both our behalfs (behalves?) 🙂

Did you receive an email or status change? Or just the phone call? Again...congrats...that must feel good 🙂

Nope just a phone call. I was really blown away by the speed too. He said something about them moving quickly on people they like, though he was probably just joking. I think they meet like 1x a week and go through a select few applicants. How they choose who they'll review is anyone's guess...

When I interviewed last year there was someone who had done "teach for america" as well. I had never heard of it before then. Are there a lot of people that do that before med school?

Not sure if thats sarcastic. I said teach for America, went to UW and now lives in California (and was a re applicant but didn't mention it). But if your serious - its a pretty cool EC to do and I have met a few people that have done it. I have heard nothing but awesome stories about it.

Haha, let's keep this conversation civil. And my bad, I definitely interviewed on 11/3...so yeah we were in the same group! Eep I'm totally getting nervous too...it was a great interview group, and I honestly could see every one of us getting in. I wish...

this convo is hilarious... i interviewed on 11/3 too. i guess we're all just waiting...

lol i really didnt know if it was sarcastic. i thought he/she was saying "duh who doesnt know what teach for america is??!!" its hard to pick up sarcasm on the internet but i thought we were all great applicants for sure. the school was awesome and it had a HUGE support network.

anyone interviewing soon will definitely fall in love - trust me!

I did get a complete email, and it was a pretty quick turn-around from submitting my app to receiving the email (a week maybe?). It was a full month after the complete email that I got my interview invite. I am OOR though...so maybe it's different?

yep, you should get a complete email. also, you can check your complete status on the secondary website (e.g. outstanding LORs, residency verification, etc.) for me, it took about 5 weeks from the complete email to get an interview invite, and I'm in region.

don't worry too much, they interview through march... I've heard of some people being complete early fall, not hearing anything until early spring and not being accepted until almost April!

guess there was an excom meeting yesterday? since the last one was on 10/27, this one would have covered interviews on 10/29, 11/2, 11/3 and 11/5. that's a lot of applicants... let's hope we all get in! :xf:

do they really have excom meetings every week? that seems too frequent given the excom schedule from previous years.

also, does a notification show up on your status page if your application has been reviewed (after your interview) by the excom but will be determined at a later date?

You get an email about one week from the excom meeting date with title:
"Your University of Washington Application is Still Under Consideration"

About how long did you all have to wait between completing your secondary applications and receiving an interview invite? Thanks!

About 5 weeks for me. Seems to be pretty standard, judging from posts on this forum. Unless you're a scary awesome applicant.

Congrats amakhosidlo. Your pic is awesome by the way.

Heh. Thanks, I think so too... 😀

Yeah definitely. It's pretty unreal. And I'm sure there's good news coming for everyone else who's patiently waiting too!

Being patient with this is pretty hard to do. UW is definitely the school I want an acceptance to. Although, the best way to be notified of an acceptance would be an unexpected phone call from your excom member--what a relief that would be. Congrats on your acceptance!

He he...these folks rejected me over a month ago and they JUST cashed my secondary fee check this week. I lol'd, then cried on the inside.

sorry if this has been covered before, couldn't find it in a quick search.

i was also invited to interview with the office of multicultural affairs during my interview day. can anyone describe this interview? is this an informational interview or is it formally included in admission decisions? either way i'm curious to learn about what they're up to but wanted to have some idea what the interview would be like.

thanks for any info.

Congrats 🙂. You will love your interview with the OMA...I would describe my panel interview with the SOM as grueling...and my OMA interview as a breath of fresh air afterwards. The OMA is wonderful...they are really committed to their mission and the programs they offer, and are very warm, friendly people. They give you a lot of information about their programs during that interview, and then they basically asked me "how can we convince you to go here?"...and you're like "um, accept me?" They also talk with you a bit about your own background, and your interest in working with diverse or underserved communities.

I haven't received my final decision yet, so I can't say how much the OMA interview helped my application, but I do know that they carry some weight in the final decision. You will interview with a representative from the OMA--which is really just a relaxing conversation--and he/she will take your file and comments to Dr. Acosta (Assoc. Dean for Multicultural Affairs)...who in turn "endorses" you to the excom committee. I really don't know how much weight their input is given, but in any case it's an extra good word on your application...which is inevitably a good thing. Anyways, that's how it was explained to me...it's possible that someone else might have a better understanding. But congrats, and enjoy your OMA interview!

Some happy people should be posting today!

As I understand it, it is "rolling admissions" so for those "slam dunk" non-WAMI applicants that blow away the interviewers, ExCom extends offers of admission as soon as the committe votes, usually by phone call that day from the ExCom person who interviewed them.

Those candidates who are excellent get rolled into the "under consideration" pool for review as the process progresses.

"Not ready" or rejected applicants get informed quickly also.

Wait, if the meeting is today, we won't hear until tomorrow, right?

Let the hyperventilating begin!

I would like to reiterate what MsTaco said -- totally a breath of fresh air after a potentially stressful panel interview.

I will say that you might want to do a little bit of research before the interview (know about their programs, have some questions, think about your multi-cultural experiences, how you fit into the community, etc.). I didn't beforehand, because I had been informed that it was an informal meeting. I didn't know that it was an interview until the end when the interviewer asked, "Is there anything else you'd like to tell us before Dr. Acosta advoactes for you to the admissions committee?" It definitely threw me off. Other than that part of the interview, my experience may have a little bit higher stress since I requested the meeting and was not offered it (they basically did a second med school interview).

That having been said, I think the only thing that was left out was that this meeting can only help you (at least that is what the interviewer told me). Good luck with your interview day!

ow that it was posted there was a meeting today, I have begun embracing SDN neurosis and obsessing over details.

If amakhosidlo was interviewed 11-05 and accepted 11-09, I wonder when that meeting was? If it was the 8th or 9th, would they have another meeting so soon? I wonder if the prior meeting was Friday the 6th with some notifications not going out until Monday? And maybe this weeks meeting is Thursday instead of Friday?

There is nothing on this year's interview schedule showing excom meeting dates the way last year's calendar did, but maybe they are meeting weekly. I thought they only met once a month.

Did any of you who interviewed the first week in November, but who did not get a call, end up getting an email with any status update?

hmm, any idea on how many non-WWAMI admissions are actually offered? the number of non-WWAMI/non-MSTP matriculants is dauntingly small!

Really not sure about the actual numbers. But on my interview day they mentioned that once you received your interview invite as a non-WWAMI applicant, you essentially passed that big hurdle and were on even footing with the rest of the applicants...about a 1/3 acceptance rate post-interview for both IR and OOR. At least, that's what I wanted to hear...I think that's what she said!
