Just finished the secondary but I'm not sure if interviewing in August is a good idea.

The high number of Vandy undergrads alone doesn't show an advantage.

I read somewhere that the acceptance rate is 5.9 vs. 13.7% for non-vandy vs. vandy. Not sure how accurate this is. I wouldn't be surprised though.

do it. 2 reasons:

1. rolling admissions
2. the interviewers are less likely to be sick of talking to likes of us early on

EVERY school favors their own students basically. Thats because one, obviously they know their own cirriculum and think their school gives good preperation. Also typically if you are a pre med at X school with a med school, you will probaly apply there and be likely to matriculate there. UCI has more UCI kids in the class then others. UCLA has more UCLA kids...etc etc...I wouldnt read too much into it unless the school is like creighton where they specifically state that they do favor and give preference to their own students who did undergrad there.

also, there's the fact that vanderbilt is itself a pretty strong undergrad school, so naturally most of their pre-meds will be strong applicants.

I just remember, as an undergrad there, being told by advisors that there is a "preference" for Vanderbilt alums. that's all, nothing official.

stanford has a ridiculous undergrad alum preference. we never know what happens during admission stage tho

Anyone interviewing 9/1/09? (Tuesday) If anyone is staying on a Tuesday night... go to Sportsmans 🙂

Hey everyone,

Can anyone tell me how the interview invite works? Do you get to pick a day, or do they tell you to come on a specific day? Or do I have it completely wrong?

Thanks for letting me know.

I got their confirmation e-mail on August 4th - I'm not expecting to hear until September.

do your LORs need to be uploaded in order to be considered for an interview? or is it based solely on your primary?

Confirmation email on 7/14 and still no mail. I've lost most hope =/

Same thing - with nobody posting a rejection yet, I feel this does not bode well for our kind. 🙁

I checked Vanderbilt's 08-09 thread, and the first rejection letters that were posted were around Aug 13. However some people got interview invites the same day. I know they are rolling, but maybe they hold some applications to look at shortly thereafter/a little later.

Even if we got the 7/14 emails I don't think we have to worry too much yet. There is still hope right?

yeah i don't think they've given out EVERY single invite already... it's prob in batches. let's just hope. i'm waiting too 🙁

Any gut feelings on when the second batch (8/4 emails) will come out?

I'm a 7/14 e-mail and still haven't heard anything yet, truth be told I'm not expecting much.

7/14 here as well. My best guess at this point is that they were waiting on some of our apps to be reviewed with the next bunch to see who gets the axe and who gets an invite. They probably did not want to exhaust more than a certain number of invites in the first round given that it is still early in the process. I am not too hopeful about an invite at this stage but am gonna be as optimistic as I can when I receive that thin envelope from Vanderbilt.

Hang in there guys!

Oh yeah, what if I didn't have a pre-med advisor? Do I just leave that area blank?

this autobio is a beat. 1200 word limit? wow. i'm at 500 and i think i'm done...

yeah that thing is a monster. and apparently they weigh it pretty highly. success at vandy seems to be correlated to strength of secondary essays (considering they only invite who they consider to be strong applicants to fill it out anyway). they really do want a snapshot of your life, your personality, and whatnot. vandy is all about their "collaberative environment" so toss in how you are a good team player.

Im scheduled for a late November interview at Vandy, is that too late? should I reschedule?

Yeah, don't give up hope guys. I have started realizing that yes, a lot of schools are going to give their first volley of invites to the "superstars" (high stats, special circumstances, etc.). I believe most schools then give real consideration to everyone not yet informed (unless there was an automatic circular file placement) once the dust settles there.

They likely have some of us in a pile of "rejection" and the rest in a pile of "if there is room," which at this point there is plenty of room. This is why applying early = good 👍

I bet we'll all hear about our status around the same time with perhaps the "no luck" people going first.

We'll find out soon enough!

:luck:

Hi,

I cant seem to find my letter of invitation for an interview (cant believe they dont do emails). I was wondering if someone can give me the link to check the status of my letters of rec because its not on their website and I cant find it in Google.

Also, if anyone is interviewing next Tuesday (8/18) let me know!

Thanks a lot!

Do you have your Login and pass? They send it to you in the letter. Here is the link though : https://admissions.mc.vanderbilt.edu /md/applicant/app_logon.asp 👍

Just rejected from Vandy. no surprise really but I'm just glad I don't have to wait on the mail any longer.
At least I won't have to take Orgo 2 this semester or write an autobiography. hahaha👍

Good luck everyone else!

Sorry to hear that, but you're right to be happy not to have to write that autobio! 😀 Did you get an email on a saturday?

snail mail. I don't know the post mark date was because my dad read the letter to me over the phone but mail takes abour 2 days to go from nashville to IL so I assume they sent stuff out Thursday.

Sorry to hear about that. 🙁

Were you in the 7/14 batch? I am about 3-4 days snail mail time away from Nashville so I guess I will get my letter o Mon or Tues. :scared:

So...i got an interview, but while filling out the secondary, i see this:

Vanderbuilt Secondary said:
Note: VUMS does not accept AP credit nor PASS/FAIL credit to fulfill required courses. List higher level courses if taken.

I have an AP Physics credit that my undergrad recognized so I only took 1 Physics class in college. Does this mean its a wrap for me? Should I even bother filling out the secondary? No more interview? 🙁

call them, most schools only require that classes be done prior to matriculation.

On this thread someone mentioned that Vandy requires that pre-reqs be complete by this december.... so according to that you would need to take it this fall at the latest.

ah well nonetheless theres still time at least, while it may suck, for a chance at vandy i know id do it...though my rejection letter is coming this week probably lol.

yea...one problem. i already graduated.

why didn't they look at that before they invited me? that sucks big time.

could always go the CC route? Though it sounds like you just dont want to take the class, which is understandable. Thinking of taking physics again makes me 😡

Well maybe they've already taken that into account and invited you anyway? I don't know but looks like you'll need to call them and hope for the best.

i have a full-time job and a part time job, and no CC where i live. taking a class really isn't an option.

i'll call them tomorrow to get final confirmation.

I was wondering if engineering classes could fly. I took classes like circuits etc that were sorta in that area, so if they would permit those, then I could still fill it out. Not that I have received my invite yet but just wondering in case I get one.

I took physics in college but used AP credit for a lab in physics 2...they said to still apply and the application will still be submitted...I figured that if I get in and I want to go ill just take the lab but in your case, you might want to ask them before paying for a ticket and travelling...

Yea looks like this one might be a lost cause. My school has a first semester pass-fail policy for all undergrads so Organic I on my transcript shows as Pass even though I did well and I am yet to take Organic Lab. This one is gonna be a toughie.

O well, I will wait to see what my letter has in store for me before worrying about this. Thanks for your help!

I had a similar question about Chemistry. I can tell you that they won't budge on the hours but they may let you substitute something. And I'm pretty sure they don't check that you've taken the classes before inviting you for an interview. My friend had to enroll in a class late because at his Vandy interview they told him he didn't have enough credits. Just give them a call. They are super nice.
