For those of you from California, why is Wayne State such a good place for you to go? Why do you like it so much compared to other schools? I am a prospective applicant for next year and am trying to figure out which schools i should consider to apply out of state. Any input appreciated!!

I am also waitlisted at Wayne State, OOS. I recently retook the mcat; I think my score was the reason for me being placed on waitlist. Will I have the chance to update my file with my new score for this cycle? Has anyone done this in the past?

Unless you have some specific arrangement with the Wayne State admissions committee, I'm pretty sure that for an MCAT score to be considered for THIS cycle (2009-2010) it had to be taken September 2009 or earlier. I'm pretty sure this is a widespread rule between most to all medical schools.

From another perspective, MCAT scores are part of the primary application and can't necessarily be verified after the primaries close around mid-November. In addition, I dont think anything on your Wayne State application can be updated or added at this point.

Earlier in this thread someone reported that they received information from the adcom that our spots on the waitlist are essentially set in stone now and they won't be looking at updates and moving people around anymore.

Hope this helps!

I'm from California and one big plus for Wayne State is that it's very friendly to OOS applicants. The school matches pretty well, especially in the Midwest. If you're looking to get a residency at U of Mich, Wayne can get you there. Wayne State has great clinical resources. The new Richard J Mazurek building is awesome and the DMC is no joke. It's basically THE healthcare provider in Detroit. Oh yes and Wayne State is VERY forgiving for academic mistakes. It's the perfect place to apply if you're an SMP student (i.e. low undergrad grades looking for forgiveness).

Personal reasons for why I want to attend Wayne State: My Dad is a physician and he trained there, I have family in Michigan, Detroit is only a 4 hour flight from LAX, and I'm a huuuuuuuge Red Wings fan.

The tuition is really high but the cost of living in Detroit is relatively low. The total cost of attendance for Wayne State is ~$80,000 per year. VCU, the other school where I interviewed (and was also accepted), is ~$68,000 per year for total cost of attendance. I realize $48,000 is a lot of money but spread out over the 25+ years practicing as a physician is not that big of a deal. I don't know...maybe I'm crazy wanting to attend a more expensive school? 😕

It's more simple for me, I applied there cuz my stats were near their average. I'm a SHARKS fan (who beat the Red Wings btw) so ha. But of course if I moved to Detroit I would become a Red Wings fan.

I mean most OOS students don't apply to Wayne because the tuition is SUPER high like the previous poster said. Other downsides are that it's really cold in the winter..something I'm not looking forwards to. Some plus things are that they do like OOS applicants, I guess more than other state schools.

However when applying you should look at schools based on MCAT average and GPA just so you know what schools you might be able to get into. That's how I picked Wayne, I have no family or ties there.

So I was thinking about what has been going on with the adcom since the last decision date, but I need some information from other people to try and put it together.

I interviewed in December and have been on the wait list ever since and was trying to gauge my chances for tomorrow's decision date. I assumed chances of getting pulled off the wait list were basically equal each time based on the fact that a lot of interviews were still being conducted. My big question to anyone who stalks the adcom for information or just knows is: How many interview dates/interviewees did Wayne have after March 24th (last decision date)?

I know a lot of schools are basically done interviewing in March and have much less during April so I was thinking that more of us wait listers will be getting pulled off on May 5th. I understand that our big time (May 15th and the weeks following) is just around the corner anyway but I guess im just lookin' for some extra hope for tomorrow!

Good luck tomorrow everybody! 👍

Well they interviewed 1000 people this year (I think someone mentioned this before). There are 7 rounds of offers? So 1000/7 ~ 140 applicants. So between the last decision round and tomorrow they would have interviewed 140 more applicants? Is there something wrong with this logic?

Well another way to look at it is that most likely the earlier you got an interview, the stronger you are as a candidate. So if you interviewed in Dec, it could mean that you will out rank the people who interviewed in April. I'm assuming people who are interviewing in April are kind of at the bottom of the application pool. Of course some of them might have applied late or just own on their interviews. But you could be right in that they might get a composite score that is higher than some of us on the list.

I'm not expecting anything other than a sorry you are still on the wait list. But for some of those who interviewed in the early rounds, you might get off if your score is higher.

ugh who knows 🙁 Good luck everyone tomorrow though! Don't worry 5/15 is right around the corner!

I'm not sure how many interview dates they had after March 24th but they sent an email out to those of us already accepted saying that they just conducted their last interview this past Thurs April 29th so that was pretty late and I was kinda surprised they interviewed that late. Not sure if that helps but that is what the email said to the class of 2014 sent out this morning. I'm hoping you guys get some good news because we have all worked hard and deserve something to make us happy at least for a few months before school starts. I will be praying for you guys. Good luck!!!

FYI, I went to WSU-SOM's Pre Med Symposium this last weekend, and a person on the Admissions Committee said that the strength of their applicants remain generally the same from September/October to April. He also said that once they review an applicant post-interview, that's the last time they look at the applicant's file. Although it is possible for them to look up files after this, I got the impression that they generally don't.

So judging from this, I'm assuming we all get scored a number when the Committee reviews our application, and from there, it's a matter of our score? Otherwise, I don't know how it's possible for people on the wait list to be accepted at a later decision date against applicants that get reviewed afterward. After the Committee reviews us post-interview, all it must be then is a comparison of numbers, right?

Ok so it looks like this decision date will most likely be similar to the rest. Thank you it was much appreciated!

Good luck to everyone still on the waitlist or making a decision. Wayne took a chance on me and my shoddy academic record and I am extremely grateful. I love it here! Your clinical years you will have a choice of some very different and very good hospitals from the inner city DMC and Henry Ford, to the filthy rich suburban William Beaumont. I wish you guys luck and hope to see you around next year!

All I can say is Red Wings > Sharks. One of them has 11 championships and the other has well...0. 🙂

I think the tuition is really high but there are other schools with higher OOS tuition. Michigan State, University of Colorado, and both schools in South Carolina come to mind. I don't mind the cold weather too much since I've stocked up on a bunch of winter clothing and the lectures are recorded. I realized what an asset this is while I was doing my post-bacc at VCU. You get the entire lecture experience without leaving the comfort of your own home. What's not to love about that?

For anyone who is a post-bacc/SMP student, Wayne State is the perfect school. They have a standing policy of focusing more on your graduate GPA (i.e. recent classwork) than your undergraduate GPA or even throwing out your undergraduate GPA altogether. My interviewer told me that the only GPA that the admissions committee would see was my graduate GPA (which sounds too good to be true but I'm still hopeful). Wayne State also seems to like the higher MCAT scores. So if you're like me, with a low undergrad GPA/high graduate GPA and good MCAT, then Wayne State is the perfect place to apply.

May 5th is tomorrow! :xf:

man, reading this thread is rollercoaster of emotions for me

distraught one minute and hopeful the next..

Wish they could accept all of us already

I'm not going to argue this Red Wings vs. Sharks thing because I'm not a true hockey fan 😉 Just excited that something in the Bay Area is wining because I could never depend on the Raiders

It's funny because I actually don't like the webcasted classes. We had them at Berkeley and it made me really depressed to sit at home and watch lectures all day. I'm too active, I need to go somewhere and experience it live you know? So I'm actually kind of worried that going to Wayne will make me a hermit :scared:

It does seem Wayne really really like high MCAT scores so I'm not banking on getting in. My stats are probably just not high enough for them (3.55, 29S) and my interviewer even told me this. I'm actually completely confused as to why they even gave me an interview altogether.

I'm really banking on the other wait list now but who knows? It's definitely an emotional rollercoaster but not as bad as the other school. On their forum people have been calling admissions and like 10 people get 10 different answers so we are all just really really confused!!!!

Good luck everyone!!!!!! :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

i dont even know why I keep checking my emial. Already know there's going to be no change...
i'm so weak🙁

i thought they were going to give us an update regardless of whether it's good or not...

decisions are out in your email

i assume you were accepted since you got ur email already. I think if there's no change or you're waitlisted you get your email a bit later.

no change either. oh well, it would have taken a big scholarship to get me to take Wayne over MSU, guess choice is made now.

That's because these threads are mostly speculation. Admissions decisions are somewhat stochastic, you just don't know what's going to happen. Everyone has a story of someone with a 36 on their MCATs getting rejected from Irvine, and someone with a 27 getting into Cornell or Michigan. Everyone has some quote from an admissions committee member that they cling to, but I think you just have to do your best to get good scores and good recs/resume and let go.

Anyway, I can definitely commiserate with you all...it's hard to have no idea what you're doing next year. My boss is sympathetic cause he's been through this, but he keeps asking if I'm gonna be around and I still have no answer.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone else a non-trad applicant? Is it just me or is it ridiculous trying to pay bills, volunteer, take classes and study for the MCATs all at once?

No change for me here as well. But it says something along the lines of the
"final alternate list"
what does that even mean?

They are saying "FINAL" because they have now passed all of their offer dates. Basically, they have filled the class and given out the maximum number of acceptances. From now on offers will be made only when someone who has been accepted, declines their offer.

Starting May 15th, applicants are obligated to only hold one acceptance at a time, therefore the spots at the others schools they were accepted to are open to applicants on the waitlists. There are no official offer dates anymore and waitlisters can expect a phone call or email at any point from now (or May 15th more likely) until the day before orientation the first week of August.

blech waitlisted
interviewed April 21
I guess I'm on the May 15th train as well, hopefully I won't be too disadvantaged cuz I interviewed late 😱

I don't think you're disadvantaged from a late interview. From here, I think it's up to our score now. Good luck to you all the same!

they have also chucked a certain number from the bottom of the list. I asked.

That sucks. How do we know if we're among those ppl? Will they let us know or do we have to call and ask?

Interviewed in April OOS...alternate list today. Disappointing because I really liked Wayne and I am now on 3 WL with zero acceptances. Come on May waitlist movement!!!

people were rejected today so if you're on the list you have a chance of acceptance.

Your right, alternate list is way better than a rejection. Thanks for that...this process can just get you down sometimes. I just have to stay positive and hope for the best!

Did your email say "You are currently on our final alternate list"?

it did not. just Alternate list, although final alternate list was mentioned in the letter. Did anybody get a letter that said they're on the final alternate list?

So, you are telling me there is a chance? I interviewed in mid-April and was waitlisted today. It would be nice to know my score so I could start planning for next year. Regardless, crap the bed.

Since acceptences are now based on our scores, and our scores are already determined, what do you guys think about sending an LOI... worthwhile or not?

This is what I got:

"
It is the decision of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Admissions Committee to place your application in our Alternate category. All applicants in this category have been interviewed and their respective applications were presented to our Admissions Committee. Your application will be considered during the remainder of the application process and if your status changes, you will be notified via email and/or telephone. It is not possible for us to advise you of the chances that you would eventually be offered admission. Individuals placed on the alternate list may get an admission offer at any stage of review when admission decisions are made. Individuals on our final alternate list will be considered for places that may become available during the summer.

We have made enough offers to fill the class. Typically some applicants decline those offers and we will select applicants from our alternate list to fill the class.

Yada Yada Yada..."

Well, I'm officially rejected. I don't know if it's because I confirmed my attendance at another school though, is that considered "matriculation"? *sigh*

Good luck to everyone else on the waiting list! I'm rooting for you!

Kind of different. LOL. I can't believe they wrote 2 different emails. HAHAHA.

Decisions have been made for this round. There has been no change to your status at this time. You are currently on our final alternate list. We expect to make additional offers throughout the summer as positions open. If your status changes at any time, we will contact you via email and/or phone. Make sure that your AMCAS application is up to date with any contact information changes. If you expect to be out of touch for an extended period of time, you may send us information including:

GOOD LUCK GUYS.
I think I have given up now...it's no use for me anymore.

No idea. They will probably not tell you if you asked.
