Of those who sent update letters/letters of interest/letters of intent to your interviewers, where did you send them? I sent my initial thank you notes to my interviewers to their hospital offices, but now I'm starting to worry that they may not have arrived and I'm wondering whether the update letters should maybe go to them c/o the Office of Admissions.

Any thoughts?

Update the Admissions Office directly.

If you feel you had a special connection with your interviewer then feel free to contact them as well (in hopes they'll contact the admissions office on your behalf), but at this point the process is really in the hands of the core admissions office and not the broader adcom (i.e. your interviewers + core admissions office).

I ended up sending updates to Barbara and to my interviewers. One of them recommended a book which I wanted to follow up on. It may not make any difference to the admissions committee, but at least I know that I followed through.

Does anyone know if the waitlist has moved at all yet?

Also, does anyone know how the waitlist has moved in past years (# of people on it, # of people who get in from it, etc.) I know it might be a little different this year because they're lowering the number of PLME program people who enter, but it'd be awesome to get a sense of how things might pan out...

:xf::luck::xf:

they're lowering the number of PLME program people who enter,

Is that true? Who'd you hear that from? So then there are more spaces for the rest of us applying through normal routes of admission? Along with that, they interviewed less people this year, which also (might) increase our odds. That would be good news!

That's directly from Barbara Fuller, the director of admissions, from my interview day. I don't remember the exact numbers off the top of my head so don't quote me on them but she said that the PLME program used to make up a much bigger number of the entering class (if I remember correctly it's now down to 40) AND they increased the total class size for this year by a few slots (I think it's now up to 108 from 96). I'm pretty sure I wrote it all down when I was there interviewing in December -- I'll try to dig up my notes 🙂

i remember hearing something like that, and i also remember her saying how impressed the committee was with all of the applicants they interviewed so far. i guess we're not special snowflakes after all 🙁

Has anyone heard anything about financial aid yet? We should be getting our packages sometime this week, right?

Yahoo! Got a nice scholarship, enough to justify going here over my state school. Looks like I better start apartment hunting in RI... 😀

Best of luck to those on the waitlist!

They have been decreasing the PLME numbers and increasing the total class size (ultimately to 120, but not this year)...but don't count on the lower number of PLME's to change the admissions midseason. The number of PLMEs in the incoming first year class was determined 4 years ago (when they were admitted to the 8 year program), so that number was known before the admissions season even started. I don't remember the details, but undergrad PLME students also have to let them know well in advance if they plan to leave the program (i.e. not progress to med school) or take time off.

That all said, this is the time when waitlist movement starts, and a nice thing about Brown is they are very selective about offering interviews (and it's intentional so as not to waste the time of applicants), so the stats are in favor of those still waiting. Good luck all!

Well, congrats to those who got great financial aid! I think those of us on the waitlist are just hoping that the admits holding multiple acceptances will be able to decide and notify Brown soon, so we can hopefully get good news! Good luck to all!

I withdrew my acceptance this week. I hope one of you waitlisters gets pulled off soon. all the best!

Anyone on the wait list have some good news to share yet? Did they call you? Or did you find out by a status update online? Snail mail?

Can any current students comment on how many hours a day you spend in class first year?

To everyone who made it out to second look... how was it?

It was great! I wasn't there for both days, but I heard there was an open bar on Friday night. The highlights of Saturday included this extensive "lesson" in the anatomy lab, where we got to poke around in the actual cadavers (with current students leading these "stations" which focused on different parts of the human body)...so we got to see and touch the heart, lungs, brain, kidney, liver...etc. etc. directly taken from the cadavers. After lunch, they took us on an extensive tour of the new medical building (all four floors)! The building is still very bare-boned, but you can already make out most of the important rooms...it's going to be awesome - even a lot of the M1s and M2s who were with us on the tour told us that next year is going to be amazing (and that they are really jealous of us) and the facilities were mind-blowing (like showers next to the anatomy lab, a roof terrace on the 4th floor, cafe on the first floor, dedicated iPads in the anatomy lab instead of traditional paper dissectors). The building is scheduled for completion in the middle of July.

And of course, Barbara was very cool, as usual.

It pains me quite a lot because Brown is a fantastic school but I will most likely be withdrawing in favor of New York City (primarily location and personal reasons), but I know next year will be amazing for all of you guys who will be at Brown. Best of luck!

Thanks karayraisu, your post was informative as always. You've been such a strong proponent of Brown on this thread as well as others, I'm a bit surprised to see you choosing to go somewhere else... But I'm sure wherever you go, they will be lucky to have you. Best of luck in NY!

Someone's gonna be made happy real soon cos I just withdrew my spot 🙂.

Thank you for not waiting until the last minute! I'm sure all of us on the waitlist have our fingers crossed!

You're welcome. Hope you guys get good news soon.

hey man, just curious.. are u going to Hopkins?

It's basically a Hopkins/Penn tie right now. I see we're in the same situation. I'm leaning slightly more to Hopkins but I loved Penn. How bout u?

Anybody got any stats on the waitlist--for instance, what percentage of the applicant pool gets waitlisted, and how many usually get off?

my status just changed from a wait list to a rejection on the brown portal. check your status, it may have changed as well.

Good luck guys!!!! I withdrew last week - hope some of you will hear good news soon!

Sorry about the rejection =(

did they email you to say it had changed, or did you just check randomly and see it?

Wow, scary stuff! I thought that once you were on the wait list you were either admitted, or received a silent rejection at the end of the cycle. I had no idea there was more paring down of the list.

Good luck to you on your other wait lists!

It's probably a good thing, though. I mean, if I'm out of the running, I would rather know now that keep my fingers crossed for another 3 months when I'm not going to get in.

I'm going to be totally paranoid about checking the applicant portal from now on!

I'm just waiting to see if they are going to start offering waitlist acceptances one by one, or if we're going to see another batch-style process in a few weeks.

Did anyone on the waitlist who hasn't been accepted at a school yet get an email about background check this morning?

darn, maybe everyone on the waitlist will get in?!?!?!

Wouldn't that be nice! 😉

It must just be to ensure that they can finish each background check in time, prior to anyone's matriculation.

Hey everyone,
This is obviously a throwaway account to protect my anonymity. I was just wondering if any current students could comment on drug testing at Brown... Are we tested prior to matriculation/M3? Randomly throughout? Not at all? I am a very occasional smoker and stopping would be no problem at all, but I'm just curious. Any answers would be appreciated.

I heard there are some casual smokers that go here. I don't know the answer to your question, but since no one else is replying here's my advice: stop for now, then read the student handbook (or its equivalent) when you get there and see what's safe.

i ask current students this when i interviewed at diff med schools. most med schools, including brown, don't test (though rumor has it that wash u does). but residencies do, so as long as you lay off in time, shouldn't be an issue.

congrats!

anyone who got the background check a few weeks ago hear anything?
