Oh my gosh - I didn't think I would get this post. I was certain it would go to Myuu. I haven't prepared anything to say. Uh, well let me think...I'd like to thanks my parents, my brothers, and most importantly my wife. Without her I wouldn't have had the time to type out so many inane posts. I'd like to thank my children who have believed in my posting potential unconditionally. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention all the posters who virtually padding this thread - without you I wouldn't have been able to get to where I am today. Thank you.

Yes. And vice versa. And people are often accepted to one but not the other. The adcoms for both are as virtually independent as if they were two separate programs. Really.

do you know what they are looking for in each program? they are both very heavily research oriented...but I suppose the CP would be more competitive since it's full tuition covered?

Wow, well I am but a lowly first year medical student (officially called "a peon"). I am not an adcom person, and cannot even to begin to answer this with any authority. Yes, research is great for the UP, but mandatory for the CP.

I am not privy to the numbers, so I really can't say anything regarding the competitiveness, either. Yes, the full tuition scholarships are nice, but many premeds seem hung up on the extra year of schooling AND PBL AND the portfolio system AND the dress code AND mandatory classes, etc. So I can say it was very attractive to me, yet I can see why others would not apply. In short, I think you could make arguments either way on the relative competitiveness.

Finally, please note that we are all part of Case - we all have the same opportunities to rotate in our clinical years.

Grrr....I am so outgunned on this whole top posting thing...why aren't the applicants participating?

Well, I can't speak for the others, but I'm afraid of losing my life in the process.

I have a question! How does the public health aspect factor into the UP curriculum? I haven't seen a school that tries to integrate public health to that extent, so am looking for more info on what that's like, how it changes the opportunities for the students, what that extra information comes at the cost of (if it does), etc etc?

Also I noticed CP stressed that it offered clinical interaction with patients during the first semester. How does the clinical component of UP differ or compare?

I am really disappointed in myself since I don't think the interview went well.
My interviewer asked some tough questions.
The students were all very sweet though, and I loved the School!
I was also very impressed with the curriculum that has so much
group interaction!
Crossing my fingers!
Anyways, I wanted to ask about thank you letters!
It has been about a week since the interview, and I have yet to send them since midterms ran me over.
Do you think it is too late to send them?

Thank you!!!

I've been trying to write the optional scholarly essay, but I'm not sure how/if I should.

I've participated in research by recording data, but I haven't had a project of my own. I do "technician" kind of work. Not sure it counts with regard to the essay prompt.

Can I get some guidance on this?

thanks

Can we start a new, less annoying case thread, without this post count tomfoolery, so that we can actually find useful case info without wading through pages of filth?

Here at SDN we have features that may aid you in your quest for answers. Foremost among them is the search function. Alternatively, there are several current Case students here that will gladly address your question(s). You need only ask.:ninja:

Also, I should warn you guys with questions about the university program that both the first and second years are about to hit exam weeks and may be slower to address queries.

Well, since you are asking a question, let me try and help you by giving you an answer. Heck, that's why we are on here, right?

You obviously cannot change the amount or type of participation you have made to the research project. If you are interested in continuing with more research based on the exposure you have had so far, I'd say do it. It doesn't have to be long, or explaining how you've cured cancer, either.

Good luck.

So much for the lock down, huh 😉

Some of us don't have exams...and will be ruling the roost ever-so briefly.

don't be a party pooper. :hardy:

seeing all the tomfoolery in this thread is what made me apply to Case in the first place way back in June 😀

Same, I would not have applied to here if it weren't for last year's thread. Definitely really happy that I did though!!

Filth? 😕

It's not like we are talking about cleveland's cardboard bear poop scare. That would be filthy.

For those of you who watch that video, I'd like to point out two things:

1) There appears to be a 20-something y/o man in business attire actively engaging in tomfoolery (AND filth) with a cardboard bear

2) The CP has many 20-something y/o men in business attire

Just saying...

Ok, so you're saying that i fit into the first prompt, and then i would just describe whatever i've experienced. Anyway, I'll just be straightforward, and not try to make it more complicated for myself.

thx

1) Bump lol

2) What is Cleveland like for outdoor activities? What is the situation like for camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking etc.? Are there good resources for those activities within acceptable driving distance?

I know the lake is right there for fishing, but what about rivers / creeks?

As far as fishing...I am a fly fisherman in a previous life. I think there are ample opportunities for river fisihing within driving distances of school. In fact I go to clinic in a town called chagrin falls which has a lovely river running through it. Of course there is always Holy Waters in michigan which is a 6.5 hr ish drive from cleveland...the birthplace of Trout Unlimited

maaaaaaan and here I am struggling to break top ten. If I can't keep up with the Case Western pace of posting, how am I going to keep up with their med school curriculum?! 😱😛
It's a tough life, but 199 of us have to live it. 😛

Hello all! I applied to Case thru AMCAS back in June, and when my secondary arrived I decided not to submit it because I didn't think I had a realistic chance of getting in. I got an email today "strongly encouraging" me to submit it. I'm guessing this is an automated message that everyone gets if you don't sumbit ...but just wanted to see if anyone else got this, and if it is worth my time to fill out the secondary. Thanks!
If you knew you could get in for sure, do you think you might want to come here? If the answer is yes, then fill that sucker out. Because by not applying, you have 0% chance of getting in, right?

Just got rejected from the College Track, what are my chances at the University track? I have substantial research experience, so I was hoping to get an interview for the CP...but apparently it's not enough. Has anyone gotten rejected from CP, but got an interview for UP?
Happens all the time. Again, the two admissions offices are essentially completely independent.

Edit: Dhdehdeh. Top!!

I can't believe Myuu gave you that top post! I guess she has to throw you a bone occasionally or you'll give up trying. :meanie:

I don't think you can say that one program is more or less competitive than the other. They're both looking for people who fit their mission and who they think would do well here. Although some people get invites/acceptances to both programs, many others don't. The whole admissions process is very subjective, and you might be very competitive for one program and rejected by the other. Sorry, this doesn't really give you a definitive answer, but that's because there isn't any such thing as a definitive answer.

No, definitely not too late. Send 'em if you got 'em.

I think if you've been involved in research on any level, it behooves you to write the research essay.

Can we start a new, less annoying case thread, without this post count tomfoolery, so that we can actually find useful case info without wading through pages of filth?
Short answer: no.

Long answer: No way in hell.

So seriously, Wermz, it's way too early in the year for you to be this uptight. Applying to med school is a long, tough process even under the best of circumstances, and being so stressed about it that you can't even joke around a little doesn't make it any easier or more pleasant. As the others have said, we're happy to answer whatever questions you have, but we also like to have a little fun, and IMO that's a strength of this thread, not a weakness. Also, as stressful as applying can be, once you get into your second and third years of medical school, this year is going to feel like a party. A sense of humor definitely goes a long way to help you make it through.

Some of us don't have exams...and will be ruling the roost ever-so briefly.
We need a smiley that is rubbing its hands and laughing like a mad scientist. Myuu, please convey that request to the mods.

Cleveland has a surprisingly large number of nearby parks where you can hike, bike, and do whatever else you like (within reason, of course!). I recommend that you check out the Emerald Necklace, aka Cleveland Metroparks. It's called the Emerald Necklace because it's a system of parks that...wait for it...forms a ring of green around Cleveland. 😀

Thanks for that resource! The outdoors are a huge part of my life, and having never been to Cleveland much less Ohio, I didn't know if that kind of thing was available. It's important for me to be able to do that kind of thing on any given day, so it needs to be close enough to not have to make plans.

By the way I totally agree with your position on having a sense of humor. My sense of humor is probably one of my top 3 favorite things about myself - being able to laugh at the smallest things is so much better than not being able to lol. I'm glad Case, and Cleveland based on that dramatic recreation of what bears look like when escaping, values humor.

Hey, does anyone know when they will be giving out any more interview invites? I have been complete since late august and would LOVE to hear from Case, I applied to both the UP and CP programs. Should I call and ask about my file? I haven't wanted to bother them...

Or are they just backed up from reviewing those that already interviewed for acceptances? Also, does any one know what dates are available now for interviewing, is it all the way to february?

Thanks!

Well, it was either that or I respond with keyboard cat.... which I could still do, but choose not to. Or something.

Hey guys, do you think it's too late to apply to Case now? When do they stop interviewing?
We stop interviewing in March. You're welcome to apply if you think you'd fit in here.

Personally, I much prefer the second one as it seems to suggest that you have some devious plan underway. The first one makes it look as if you are nervously occupying your hands.

As to the vaunted Emerald Necklace, as CCLCMer said, there are over 60 miles of paved trails surrounding the city of Cleveland in the Metropark system. They're great for biking, running, and birding. They're also good for inline skating if you're good with stopping while on hills, as the hills seem to end in intersections. I'm not, so I tend to look for flatter things, like the Elyria to Kipton leg of the North Coast Inland Trail or, in a pinch, Wade Oval. If you're into archery, there's a JOAD group that shoots outdoors during the spring and summer that would love to have you come by (and won't charge you very much at all for equipment and 12 scored ends--$5!).

About 40 minutes south of here, you'll find yourself in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which has some very nice trails aaaaaaaaand will rent you snowshoes in the winter, provided there's 6" of snow on the ground already.

Not sure about perfectly ordinary fishing, but there's ice fishing to the west during the winter if you're feeling adventurous.

If you're a hunter, apparently the laws on whitetail deer are pretty lax here. Supposedly. I remember someone telling me that bowhunters could bag something like 42 deer in a season, if they so chose. I'm not at all interested in hunting though, so if that's your thing, you'll be needing to ask someone else.😳

If you're into indoor sports, winter ones at least, there's recreational skating, speedskating, and hockey available all season long, more or less.

If you prefer to watch sports, you'll find that the teams here aren't really known for their victories (with the notable exception of the Cavs), so the tickets are dirt cheap. So! Sports team roundup time:

Baseball: The Cleveland Indians (MLB, $6!!)
Football: The Cleveland Browns (NFL--attendance not recommended for Ravens fans), The Cleveland Gladiators (AFL)
Basketball: The Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA, who needs Lebron??)
Hockey: The Lake Erie Monsters (AHL), if you want to drive 2 hours, you could see the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL--totally feasible, as I've done it)
Soccer: Yeah, well... There's a petition for that. Apparently, we once had a decent MLS team.
Roller derby: Wait, wut? The Burning River Roller Girls.

Invited to reply, despite having not being at CWRU anymore.

Well, it was either that or I respond with keyboard cat.... which I could still do, but choose not to. Or something.
Or your own keyboard cat can just decide to respond at her own initiative. She has hacked your computer when you weren't looking.

The Metroparks are a real hidden treasure, that offers tons of outdoor activities and programs throughout the year, and is also open [with lots of good hiking and other things to do] during the winter.

North Chagrin River Reservation is a good place to skate overall. Just don't go along Strawberry Lane, and you'll be OK 👍 Avoid South Chagrin River Reservation (granted, it's also pretty far from CWRU). That's all downhill one way, and you hit a lot of intersections. From personal experience. Oh, and there are skate parks (with ramps and rails) in downtown Cleveland on E. 9th by the lake and Cleveland Height's Cain Park (closer to CWRU) if you're into that kind of stuff.

The Metroparks also has a mountain bike course located at the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. If I remember correctly, it has a "beginner's" course that is about 1mi long, and an advanced course that goes about 2mi. At least from the 5 minutes I saw the fence surrounding the course as I walked by as I was scouting the Erie Canal Towpath (a separate trail) for skating trails (The towpath is, btw, absolute fail, for skating, but great for mountain bikes with its gravel trails. It goes on for 30+ miles towards Akron and beyond, iirc).

About 40 minutes south of here, you'll find yourself in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which has some very nice trails aaaaaaaaand will rent you snowshoes in the winter, provided there's 6" of snow on the ground already.
CVNP also has camping. And Blossom Center, which is an outdoor venue for music performances and the Cleveland Orchestra. Near CVNP, there is skiing (and snowboarding and snowtubing) (and also over in Chesterland), but it isn't incredibly fancy, as all Cleveland has are just hills. Good skiing will need to done in NY or WV

Not sure about perfectly ordinary fishing, but there's ice fishing to the west during the winter if you're feeling adventurous.
Fishing can be done at CVNP or at just about any state park in Ohio with the proper license. Punderson State Park comes to mind -- and that park has camping. It's about 45 minutes out from CWRU, iirc. Not sure how good the park is, though, since it's been almost 15 years since I've last been there. You can also head to the OH/PA border at the Pymatuning Reservoir, where you can rent a boat and go fishing. About a 70 minute drive from CWRU... I think. Haven't been there in about 5 years.

If you're into indoor sports, winter ones at least, there's recreational skating, speedskating, and hockey available all season long, more or less.
And figure skating. Protip: give them very wide berth when you're making rounds during public sessions. Sharp blades (and toepicks) that aren't on ice (or rubber) aren't very safe. That aside, the ice skating rinks in Cleveland are exceptional

If you prefer to watch sports, you'll find that the teams here aren't really known for their victories (with the notable exception of the Cavs), so the tickets are dirt cheap. So! Sports team roundup time:

Baseball: The Cleveland Indians (MLB, $6!!)
Football: The Cleveland Browns (NFL--attendance not recommended for Ravens fans)
or Steelers.
The Cleveland Gladiators (AFL)
for the off-season?
Basketball: The Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA, who needs Lebron??)
Hockey: The Lake Erie Monsters (AHL), if you want to drive 2 hours, you could see the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL--totally feasible, as I've done it)
Soccer: Yeah, well... There's a petition for that. Apparently, we once had a decent MLS team.
Roller derby: Wait, wut? The Burning River Roller Girls.
There's also the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres.

... and other things not mentioned in this post.

Anyway, lots to do in and around Cleveland/NE Ohio.

You can just add people to your "ignore list" and it will hide their posts unless you specifically click on it. This way you can screen out all of the junk you don't want to look at 😀
